Letter from Jean Gee re: tailgate parties

Brint,

I didn't save my letter after quickly reading it, but in fairness to the NCAA, doesn't this only apply to those tailgates that charge for food or drink? Charging the public and not charging athletes would be problematic.

However, providing free stuff to the public (including any athletes who happen to come along) doesn't seem to violate the letter that I received from Jean. Am I wrong on that, Brint (usually I am)?

Between our two tailgates, we probably provide half of the free food at a typical griz game. I think we are both OK as long as we don't charge anyone. Perhaps the NCAA would be happiest if we charged only athletes and let the publci in for free.
Jack

let's take this out to its logical conclusion: For Brint to continue providing hotdogs to kids, he would have to charge them, claim the income and pay income tax, and i guess somehow get a business license from UM to operate on campus??? Or make the kids fill out a W2, have them "work" the tailgate, and pay them in hotdogs.

this tailgate stuff is total BS. the NCAA sucks, but unfortunately we have "boosters" at UM who go a lot further than a free burger at a tailgate.

i won't go into details, or name names, but coaches need to make sure our athletes never give out their cellphone #'s to certain boosters and never do summer jobs for them. accept booze from them. and party at their homes. ESPECIALLY when under age.
"boosters" need to be held accountable just as much as athletes if not more. they should be banned from texting, calling and hanging out with players. our coaching staffs and administration need to keep these hanger ons at bay.

You should be banned from posting s*** on the forum.

Oh hey guys... I really shouldnt be saying this and I really should be saying this out loud but I'm going to tell you anyway so you just keep quiet.

Not sure, are you a "corporate" tailgate like mine is? (in the grass area) We have our own crazy rules, we have make it abundantly clear that the parties are private and for friends/clients/invited guests only. So the "free food" argument is goofy because we are not there to serve the public, but just our invited guests.

That did it. I will NEVER again drink beer or soda at a tail gate. I never ate the grease but will stop a young person that might be an athelete at the U or any kid that might try to get a "free" bite from now on. Hell I won't allow any standing around or visiting by a kid that looks of High School age or in college. Ban them all. If I suspect an adult is an NCAA rep I will toss them also. If the person looks to be a Democrat they will be thrown out. Any religion talk is grounds for a throw out. Singing is not allowed. Cheer squads (msu) will be required to clean up all the debris.

Drunks are welcome. The poor are invited but must pay for all food and beverage. Royce E is welcome as long as he brings his whiskey and gives it to the rest of us. Gwen F will be required to kiss Growler. Pat Williams has been disqualified in the previous requirements.

End and ban all tail gates. End the NCAA.

I said I wasn't going to name names. NOT that "I really shouldn't be saying this". HUGE difference there. The NCAA creates a blurry line with its rules regarding improper benefits and this tailgating issue is complete bullshit.
What I am saying is that due to the fact that we are under a microscope currently, our coaches need to keep certain boosters away from our athletes. It's VERY well known within the UM community who these "hanger on'ers" are and they should have never been allowed to get as close as they have to players. Time to cleanse the program of these people regardless of their donations.
Not sure why you got so upset at me for making a point pertinent to the subject of the thread. Feel free to report me to the mods and try to get me banned, if you really, truly feel like what I posted was so inappropriate and damning to you, this board and the University. Good luck. :thumb:

Is that really the 'intent' of the rule? I thought the rule was that boosters were not to provide student-athletes, recruits, or family members with any preferential treatment. That is, you are forbidden to treat them differently than you would anybody else.

If you're giving away free food/beverages to anyone who wanders by, then you're not giving the student-athlete or recruit any preferential treatment.

Apparently I've misunderstood the NCAA all along.... but then again, maybe they were never meant to be understood?

That might make some sense, if some corporate tailgates are regularly inviting lots of athletes relatives without any other business connection to those people.

They made student-athletes give money to a charity in an amount equal to what the estimated value of the food and drinks totalled. This occurred even though no one was charged at the tailgate in question. So it goes way beyond the "preferential" standard in my opinion. The NCAA is a joke.

If one cruises through the corporate tailgates in the grass area they'll notice every spot has "private party / invitation only" signs up - it's required. The only non-public party is the GSA party in that area. Some abide by the rules more than others though, we're pretty strict b/c we've been warned in years past that we were operating too much like a "public" tailgate.

That's the one thing I wonder though - the business connection. So if someone in my office sells a volleyball player's parents a home. Can that agent invite the player or her family over to the tailgate? (in fact I emailed Jean Gee to find this out)

Wasn't there some big thing, that the NCAA said that a student athlete could not get condiment packs with the meal because they were free. Or was it something else similar?

Just charge everyone a penny, then it's not free. At the end of the season give the penny jar to charity.
