I've witnessed (participated) this giving the food deal to a couple Bobcat players post-game tailgating.
A couple?

Shit there were 9 or 10 recruits there................

You are correct, sir. Didn't want to alert the NCAA. F*ck it, WE SERVED THEM PRIME RIB. :rule:

Why not get Hostess to sponsor tossing your twinkies?

And how long before somebody like Griz Musician gets hit by a Ding Dong and sues or writes another email to Penthouse forums?

Funny.. I got my weekly U of Wyoming athletics newsletter tonight.. and this little tidbit was in there..

From the Compliance Office (Booster involvement with student-athletes: Occasional meals)…
Boosters may provide an occasional meal to a student-athlete or an entire UW athletics team. However, these meals may only be provided on special occasions and infrequently. The meal may take place in a booster’s home, on campus or at a facility that is regularly used for home competition. Occasional meals may be catered as well. Boosters interested in providing a meal for a specific team must contact the applicable sport. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact our compliance staff. Jessica Kumke, Director of Compliance – (307) 766-4960 or Peter Prigge, Compliance Assistant – (307) 766-3795.

Will this be referred to in the future as "Tailgate-gate"?

For one thing I am proud to say that I have never ever partaken of an Griz Tail-Gate party at any time in my whole entire life; and I don't ever plan on doing so. I bring mine with me and/or hit up on the concessions. But for those that do sponsor such, I can still feel their pain, though:

Really depresses me also to watch all those starving and emaciated student athletes sprawled out on the sidewalks begging for food and all them twinkles that they're addicted to. Really tears my heart out. Knowing how the UofM Food Service is and all. Hard to get a decent meal these days and all that, I know, I know, been there, done that.

Wow. The irony. So is the NCAA playing favorites or are they just nit picking on UM?

How is it an extra benefit for an athlete if the particular tailgate would give the same thing to any person who walked into their tailgate?

Some possible headlines to announce the "violations":

"Griz athletes punished for hotdogging".

"On a wing and a player"

"NCAA: Nacho Cheese Ain't Allowed".

What else you got?

"Athletes/Boosters accused of double dipping".

"Monte in trouble for playing with Chester and his Cheetos"

"UM punishment is peanuts. (No, really. Peanuts. Well peanuts and chips. And perhaps a little salsa. But peanuts!)".

"UM guilty of consuming brownies laced with chocolate".

"Covered dish; open violation".

"Griz playoff hopes deep fried".

"UM leadership grilled over use of grills".

Well the U doesn't allow tailgates to charge for food or beverage either... So I guess student athletes just can't go to tailgates for anything other than conversation? Yank yank, fuck you NCAA.

Not sure, are you a "corporate" tailgate like mine is? (in the grass area) We have our own crazy rules, we have make it abundantly clear that the parties are private and for friends/clients/invited guests only. So the "free food" argument is goofy because we are not there to serve the public, but just our invited guests.

That might make some sense, if some corporate tailgates are regularly inviting lots of athletes relatives without any other business connection to those people.

If one cruises through the corporate tailgates in the grass area they'll notice every spot has "private party / invitation only" signs up - it's required. The only non-public party is the GSA party in that area. Some abide by the rules more than others though, we're pretty strict b/c we've been warned in years past that we were operating too much like a "public" tailgate.

That's the one thing I wonder though - the business connection. So if someone in my office sells a volleyball player's parents a home. Can that agent invite the player or her family over to the tailgate? (in fact I emailed Jean Gee to find this out)

You would think that would be OK, due to the "business connection", but if someone was inviting athletes relatives regularly, and repetitively without any personal or business connection then I would see it being questioned.

Follow-up.

Nope, can't do it, unless someone sold them a house (as a direct example to my profession) before the student-athlete was in the 9th grade (of an age where they'd be high school students).

So we're supposed to act like uppity a holes to parents of a SA of the school we are a booster of, but its legal to show Montana hospitality to the other team's fans and parents.

Jeezus this is stupid.

Can we just exercise our right to bare arms, and blow up the NCAA? Their rule book is more stupid than
More Stupid University in Boozeman. :)

this tailgate stuff is total BS. the NCAA sucks, but unfortunately we have "boosters" at UM who go a lot further than a free burger at a tailgate.

i won't go into details, or name names, but coaches need to make sure our athletes never give out their cellphone #'s to certain boosters and never do summer jobs for them. accept booze from them. and party at their homes. ESPECIALLY when under age.
"boosters" need to be held accountable just as much as athletes if not more. they should be banned from texting, calling and hanging out with players. our coaching staffs and administration need to keep these hanger ons at bay.

You should be banned from posting s*** on the forum.

Oh hey guys... I really shouldnt be saying this and I really should be saying this out loud but I'm going to tell you anyway so you just keep quiet.

That is exactly correct.

I told Wahlberg this the other day when we were talking about this subject.. but the NCAA is cool with Cam Newton cashing large booster checks and Miami boosters buying strippers, parties, and yacht parties (not like a GB1 yacht party) but they're not cool with student athletes, parents, and potential recruits swinging by a tailgate after a game to get some 6 hour old food. Way to pick your battles, NCAA. Well done.

I wouldnt worry too much about it. I think if you use common sense, you arent in any danger.

Does this include giving to the visiting people as well? We entertain a lot of folks from out of town.
I don't care who the person is and it is no one's business who I give cold frosty beverages too. The only stipulation I have is you have to be over 21 YOA. If you are not suppose to except free gifts because you are a special student, than I suggest you don't! You know the rules, it is not my responsibility to figure this out.
