Every year that March Madness rolls around, there are a few Cinderella's that surprise everyone--a Florida Atlantic, George Mason, Davidson, et. al. And every year I wonder: Could either of our programs ever become that Cinderella team?
We came close in 1975, when we lost to UCLA by three points in John Wooden's final year. In the modern era, we beat Nevada in 2006, and were tied with Boston College at halftime for a chance at the Sweet Sixteen. On the women's side, I believe we came within one or two points of upsetting Stanford in the first round of an NCAA tournament game back in the Robin Selvig Heyday.
Could it happen again?
If so, my bet is on the Lady Griz. Watching the NCAA tournament, I find it hard to see us competing with all the incredible talent on the Men's side, with the top programs essentially being farm teams for the NBA. But watching that championship game between LSU and Iowa, I could see the Lady Griz competing, especially if Mack Konig, a top 100 recruit, continues to improve, and our incoming freshmen-- especially Adria Lincoln--are as good as I think they are. Yes, we have to get bigger. And yes, those LSU kids were so athletic.
But given Holsinger's recruiting talent, and the staff he has put together, I don't think a tournament run is outside the realm of possibility. For me, it's our program that I'm most optimistic about for the next few years.
