Lady Griz!

Every year that March Madness rolls around, there are a few Cinderella's that surprise everyone--a Florida Atlantic, George Mason, Davidson, et. al. And every year I wonder: Could either of our programs ever become that Cinderella team?

We came close in 1975, when we lost to UCLA by three points in John Wooden's final year. In the modern era, we beat Nevada in 2006, and were tied with Boston College at halftime for a chance at the Sweet Sixteen. On the women's side, I believe we came within one or two points of upsetting Stanford in the first round of an NCAA tournament game back in the Robin Selvig Heyday.

Could it happen again?

If so, my bet is on the Lady Griz. Watching the NCAA tournament, I find it hard to see us competing with all the incredible talent on the Men's side, with the top programs essentially being farm teams for the NBA. But watching that championship game between LSU and Iowa, I could see the Lady Griz competing, especially if Mack Konig, a top 100 recruit, continues to improve, and our incoming freshmen-- especially Adria Lincoln--are as good as I think they are. Yes, we have to get bigger. And yes, those LSU kids were so athletic.

But given Holsinger's recruiting talent, and the staff he has put together, I don't think a tournament run is outside the realm of possibility. For me, it's our program that I'm most optimistic about for the next few years.

I am happy to hear that you are excited about Adria Lincoln - I am equally anxious to see the Huards together, Lacy Donarski, and Thaya Wacker. There will be a lot of talent on the floor. I hope they can find a big girl in the portal but everyone has that need. Next year will be fun.
I am counting on GrizJournal to give us an update when everyone shows up in June.

For me to begin to even dream (no knock on you @citay - it is just how I'm wired), a Holsinger led team needs to:

A. Win the "in-Season" Big Sky Title
B. Actually win a Conference Tournament Game
C. Win the Conference Tournament

In my opinion, before even dreaming about a win or two in the NCAA tournament, the team needs to dominate the not great (when stacked up against other conferences in the tourney) conference they are currently in.

That hasn't happened in a while and it'll be interesting to see if it even happens. :twocents:

 I pretty much ceded my insider access when coach Petrino left for Boise. I did bump into coach H last week & he said things were pretty active right now, but provided no details. I'd wager that anyone who attends the 2023 Montana Women's Basketball awards banquet on April 26 might pick up some updated roster info.

Upsets, especially by 13, 14, 15, and 16 seeds, are pretty rare in the women's tournament. I think there's a lot of things that factor into it, but they're really rare.

It'll definitely take some building for the Lady Griz to do so IMO -- it won't happen in one season. Winning conference tournament games --> making NCAA tournament --> playing well enough in non-conference to get a 11 or 12 seed and so on.

The next two years are pretty important ones for the Lady Griz.

Typical Citay inaccurate historic babble with some overhyped comments about players he's (she's?) probably never seen play. He (she?) should Google up highlights of Lady Griz 1st Round NCAA road win against Wisconsin in 1992. Probably biggest win in Lady Griz history!

I agree…except it’ll talk a win or 2 in the NCAA before they get respect and are able to get into the 16. Similar to what Gonzaga did initially.

Lady Griz ranked as high as 17th and won first round home NCAA tourney game vs. UNLV in 1994. Won another 1st round road game (vs.San Diego State) in 1995.

Citay......maybe someday they'll win THREE NCAA TOURNEY GAMES again! In the meantime tell us all about the incoming recruits and the UCLA game in 1975. Wasn’t that John Wooden's last year? Didn't they call him the Wizard of Westwood?

I think that's a Macy Donarski, you mean, right? Her older sister, Lacy, played three years at Iowa State until declaring going 'Portal,' recently.

I agree that it's good to take care to get names and spelling correct (I've made my share of mistakes). In that light, Macy Donarski's older sister is Lexi Donarski.

Names in bold have been corrected.
