Talked to a friend who has officiated at a few levels and he said that was a super stretch of the NCAA review rules. Not outside of the rules but definitely outside of the Standard Operating procedure. He said they are given training on what to specifically look for and make an attempt not to legislate the whole play. They went into the review trying to ensure she got the ball off in time, and the came out with a foul call. He felt that was a massive extension as to the spirit of the rule and what he believes is their training on how to conduct video reviews.
He said they were told over and over again that the purpose of review wasn't to insert officials into the outcome of the game. Rather to correct obvious errors and protect players. They didn't do last night with that review, and the Montana coaching staff probably had every reason to feel hard done by that. He said that it was just better to check that she got the shot off and move on to over time and let the teams settle it on the floor.
just thought I would relay that.
Watching the game live....one of the officials did signal a foul on the play right away. I noticed and thought "no way" right then. Then the review seemed to take a long time. It was obvious the shot should count to tie the game. But then after the review both teams tromp to the FT line and NAU wins it. They didn't come up with foul during the review; they had already called it.
My take.....no way that's a foul and if so it's before and not during the shot. There was slight contact between both players with the ball in the air before the NAU girl even touched it. No way she was fouled in act of shooting.
How does the LG defender not stop the play (touch the ball!) with the ball coming in at about 7 feet? One of the most bizarre last second losses (0.4) after a last second win (0.8) was pretty much in the books. Surprised the Griz coaches didn't go ballistic over that foul call!
