Huh? "we will be a team to be reckoned with maybe not so much next year but in 23/24."
23/24? I thought the prevailing view last year, was that the new coach, with all his recruiting contacts, was going to come and bring big time transfers to make an immediate impact? Upgrade the talent right away and bring the Pac-12 coaching and scheme. That's why he had to drop 6 scholarship players, without seeing them play and mostly via zoom.
Instead, he has a team with considerably better talent, but with only 1 of the top 9 his recruit, that is probably going to finish with about the same conference record as last year. Hopefully, they will do better in the tournament than last year. The first round last year, to a team beaten twice, was quite awful. Yes, he allowed Fatkin to return to the team. His best move by far. I wonder if Fatkin would have returned under the prior coach, but I know nothing of the circumstances. I haven't seen the 2 foreign frosh play at all. How are they? Will they be good? Will they make it? Hope so.
While many coaches don't immediately turn a team around, some Griz fans acted last year, and earlier this season, like the new coach was going to work magic.
Losing the Big 3, as well Morris-Nelson and Frohlich (all of whom are listed as seniors on the roster), is going to create a large hole next year.
If the team wins 3 of the last 4, and does well in the tourney, that would be great. I'm not so sure that's going to happen. Like all of you, I also like the team and enjoy watching them play. I will keep an open mind on the coach, but, based on what some of you said last year and earlier this year, I expected the team would have done better at this point. There's still time for them to catch fire. Hopefully, they will.
With the firestorm that was Shannon’s exit and the discord from last years players it’s any wonder the ladies have played as well as they have. Anyone who phantom a quick turnaround would have been delusional at best. To change a system, new coaches and players all around in a new system would have have been nothing less than monumental. Give credit where credit is due, Brian has done an excellent job and I for one is excited for the future of lady Griz bb.
Shannon left 2 years ago. Petrino coached last year.
Tell us more about how "Brian has done an excellent job". Sorry, but I just don't see it. He dumped scholarship players when he first came, mostly in a zoom call, without even looking at them. One went to a D-I school and started the first 6 or 8 games. He brought in 2 frosh recruits who have done nothing, yet. He brought in Tsineke. She started for a bit, but isn't now. He let Fatkin, a former Griz player, back on the team. Great move. He kept and brought in two good female assistants.
The team of mainly returning players, Fatkin, and 2 very good frosh, who were already committed to UM, seems to have considerable more talent than last year's team. The point contribution of new players is huge in comparison to what was lost last year, which is only one measurement. The team has played well at times, but hasn't at other times. The team may end up with a worse percentage conference win record than last year. The coach has said, at least once and maybe more, that he hasn't been doing a good job of coaching.
Sorry, but while the coach may turn out to be great, I just don't see that he has done an "excellent job", at least yet. His "excellent job" doesn't seem to be showing in the team's conference record.
