Lady Griz/Portland State thread

Lady Griz open conference play on Thursday night against a pesky Portland State team that is also commencing conference play. The co-conference players of the week, UM's Mandy Morales and PSU's Kelsey Kahle go head-to-head. The Lady Griz have an outstanding supporting cast for Morales to help chip in (Mandy can't do it herself) in Dana Conway, Johanna Closson, Tamara Guardipee, and Sonya Rogers as well as a deep bench.

It should be a wild game. Any thoughts?

LG by 15, at least.

I think it will be a good series this year between the LG and Portland State. I thought they'd be a contender this year along with NAU, ISU & Weber St. They haven't won on the road yet this year with a 4 - 9 record which surprises me. A victory over Idaho (77 - 48) and losses to Gonzaga (17 pts), Portland (5 pts) & Cal St-Northridge (10 pts).

They have two transfers from Oregon St. (Brosterhous & Walton) but have started nine different players this year so far. Their frontcourt isn't helping so far with Kahle leading the team in rebounds at 5' 10" (a 6.2 avg per g) & scoring @ 18.4. Seems like Jenni Ritter is in a sophomore slump hitting only 54.3 % of her freethrows (19 -35) & only 32.5 % of her treys (27 - 83), fouling out four times so far this year, but I wouldn't neglect her contributions overall. 5' 7" Jr. Boscacci leads their team in assists @ 3.9 a game. Arns has only started ten of thirteen which also surprises me. They're still young & could easily put together a good game though.

Let me chime in here Wyoming. Whenever the pep band yells "you will not make the basket" and Ritter is at the line, it will have a whole new meaning tomorrow night. Making only 54% of your free throws is pretty embarassing. They're basically reward shots for drawing the foul from your opponent and Ritter just cannot cash them in. I bet that if the Lady Griz were looking for someone to foul, it would be Ritter because of her crappy foul shooting.

A couple of more things I'd like to add with my comments about Ritter is why the hell is Boscacci starting in the first place? I like the fact she can create offense for her teammates but she just can't seem to do the same for herself (note her 0.5 PPG). Yes, they are young for that they have only two seniors (Heather Arns and Monica Uhrig). It does make sense that Arns is a starter because she has more experience with that program than Uhrig does (Uhrig was originally a Gonzaga commitment).

And before I forget about Arns, is she hot or what?

Morales going off again!!!!! She should teach FT shooting to the men. Unreal how good she is, and only a Sophomore!!!

Wyoming, a team that the LG defeated 79 - 72 last week, got by #25 New Mexico 54 - 51 in Laramie.

Niiiiiice!! (actually, the LG have beaten Wy twice this season).

Congrats to the LG. AGAIN!!

Game ball goes to Sonja Rogers. She deserved it this time. 27 points, 17 in first half. Sonja and Mandy make such a great guard combo.

Sonya Rogers was on fire tonight. She can hoist up a 3 quicker then anyone I have seen. Morales played well but had a ton of turnovers tonight. Besides the guards the rest of the team struggled. Still a good win though.

What a great way to start conference play...with an explosive performance for Sonya Rogers. Mandy didn't do that bad either and Guardipee pulled down a lot of boards. The Fergus Flash really showed why she was on fire tonight.

Portland State came out of the half on fire defensively, showing why they were really pesky. They narrowed the Montana lead to about 10 points (I think) but that was as close as the Vikings got in the second half after Sonya started scoring all those points to help the Lady Griz pull away.

And to finish my :twocents: on this game, Portland State's Heather Arns may be hot (as in really, really good looking), but her shooting was anything but.

Here's my best pic from the PSU game:

Considering a career average already @ 37 games with 691 points scored @ 18.676 & SC had a career average of 18.724 (2,172 points in 116 g) all MM has to do is average about 19 points a game for the rest of her career to be the LGs leading all-time scorer, yeah I guess so.
[MM should play about the same number of games (116), knock on wood, with 15 + 2(BSC Tournament) this year & with a 29 game regular season now & two games in the BSC Tournament the two years after this, even without going to the NCAAs the same amount of points scored, roughly, could be expected.
What's really amazing is that MM is averaging better than 6.2 assists a game (88/14g) this year, which is better than what Brooklynn Lorenzen did as a sophomore (5.66) and junior (5.53). With her average @ 23.2 & 6.2 assists that's like saying she's responsible for 35 points a game, at least. Over her entire career SC had 421 assists (average of 3.6 over 116 g) + a career average of 18.8 yielding an influence of 26 points a game over her entire career. Of course, those are but statistics & doesn't account for everything, but it is interesting none the less. Both are pretty impressive though. It's good to see some players are catching up to her overall influence upon the game.]
What's needed are other players to step up and compliment such prowess with focus and added scoring (Rogers getting 27 the other nite really helps), defense and ball-handling (20 turnovers in a game isn't going to make it). Not necessarily the same player but any two or three (Closson, Rogers, Lohman, Guardipee, Beck? Snead? Conway? etc.) in any given game to lighten the load so to speak & execute when opponents double team. If the LG get rated in the top 25 & can get past the BSC Tournament then a #8 or #7 seeding could be possible (though hardly absolutely certain @ this stage), which bodes well for a possible first round victory in the NCAAs.
