But ronbo, nothing says that having black athletes will lift us from "the depths" better players will, regardless of their race.

this argument that montana does not have a black population ergo robin has not recruited black players simply falls apart when the comparison is made to the major men's sports, football and basketball.

football fans! how many national championship games would we have won or played in the past ten years without:
corey falls, kelly bryant, justin gaines, calvin coleman, yohance humphrey, etu molden, levander segars, vernon smith, trey young, alan saenz (to name only a few of the more prominent black stars over the past decade?) basketball fans! where would the history of our program be without micheal ray richardson, rod brandon, derrick pope, leroy washington, tony reed, eric jordan, nate achison, delvon anderson, travis decuire, matt williams, dan trammel, david bell, marcus rosser, vic venters, kamaar davis, virgil matthews?

every single player an african-american; every single one from out of state; every single one (except richardson) recruited during robin selvig's tenure as head coach.

the while the lady griz have had but one black player, vickie austin, a player packaged, wrapped and sent special delivery to us by the coach at long beach state. i question whether robin, in 26 years, has actively recruited a single black player.

so, criticize if you will my wish that robin recruit the occasional black player every decade or so, the while you salivate at the arrival next year to wash griz of chris chambers and reggie bradshaw, and gus chase to dahlberg. the world has never been in short supply of hypocrites.

City,

You are nearing the number of burgers McDonalds has sold with your never ending bashing of Selvig and your inner city rant. The sad truth is you couldn't carry his water bottle. Go back to SF and have a freaking cappucinno and a croissant. :deadhorse:

gb1: you are nearing the number of wal-marts worldwide in the bricks you have laid in rebuttals. go back to your favorite restaurant and have a taco.

Poooooooor city,

That was pretty wek city, of course, about what one can expect from you. You keep on limping out with your same ole same ole. You are the Dennis Rodman of ideas, you have no game anymore but you still show up anyway.

The difference between our opinions is the vast majority of the LG fans totally agree with me. Even if they didn't Selvig is doing it his way, you of all people should know not to confuse apples and oranges, look at those shirts you wear Citay! :thumb:

Now go try and prepare another lame arguement for going D1 in football, we can hardly wait.... sleep: sleep: sleep: sleep:

Well, City, you mentioned all the black players the Griz men's basketball team had and where they came from (out of state), which really is inconsistent with the very first thing you said in your last post.

But Selvig concentrates on recruiting in-state. Last I checked, the Lady Griz BB team had a deficit, spending more money than earning it even though the past couple of seasons, they had higher attendance then the men. Doesn't seem like Robin's going to try to increase the recruiting budget to increase that deficit just so they can recruit in an area predominantly black so they can get a black player that may not even be better than some of the white or native American players Lady Griz already have.

I do believe that the Men's team has a higher recruiting budget than the women's team. Thus, the greater reason that Robin recruits in-state for most of his players. And, in-state, it is predominantly white, very few blacks.

I imagine if Robin concentrated on out of state players like the men's BB team did, we would have a black player on the Lady Griz team. But, Robin has built this team's reputation and success on in-state talent. And, from the looks of it, there is still quite a bit of talent in the high schools right now to carry on the Lady Griz reputation and success with white players because there are so few black players in Montana. And to help keep the recruiting budget for the Lady Griz go totally out of whack.

Then maybe we should switch conferences. Yep, that is it, the conference is what is bringing donw the basketball programs, and the University should step up and move to a conference that is not deemed mediocre.

The UM recruiting budgets for all sports are:

women - $44,467
men - 131,483

[Those budgets seem very low.]

Revenue for basketball:

women - $928,000
men -1.258 million

Expenses for basketball:

women - 949,000
men - 1.01 million

[Is the extra men's revenue from revenue games and television, if it isn't attendance? I assume ticket prices are the same?]

Source: Dept. of Education site; year ended 6/30/05

Ticket prices for mens are higher. Men's also require higher donation levels for GSA scholarship donation.

true and gb1: since you two seem to my two most adversarial emoticons on this issue, let me point out:
1.) i did not initiate this thread. ronbo did. the thread was on page four, had had some 60 replies and was already the second most viewed thread on this board before i even posted. so obviously there's interest in this subject well beyond me.
2.) during his tenure, rob has had 105 letterwinners. of them, 34 have been from out of state. the breakdown: washington 9, oregon 5, alaska 4, california, north dakota and wyoming 3 each, illinois and colorado 2 each, minnesota, maryland and idaho 1 each. (odd that hollie tyler is the only player from idaho to letter in the history of the program.) these stats may support the contention that the recruiting budget is limited, as most of the recruits have come from the northwest or from neighboring states wyoming and north dakota.
3.) curious that montana has produced so few--any?--steller black women's players the past 25 years. on the men's side, you can go way back to ray howard and zip rhoades, and forward to j.r. camel and chris spoja. in football, where would we be without lex hilliard? are there any great black women's players that got away? if so, i can't think of them.
4.) i will also say that if there were black players here, i'm sure rob would recruit them with the same effort and success he's put into recruiting native americans.
5.) still--i sure would love to see another vickie austin! if you want an assessment of her talent, just go ask shannon schweyen. had vickie not gotten hurt, those two would have cut a much wider swath in the ncaa tournament in 1990.

this is actually a great thread. the reason i like swillys' posts is because he calls it like he sees it. blacks are superior to whites in athletics. i don't know why. but if you do research, and look at football and basketball especially, this is the case. why are these ones so good? because these are the sports that every school in the country has. this isn't saying that every single black person is better than every single white person in the country. but let's be honest. who has been to the wayne estes tourney in montana? while there, do you find yourself following the black guys because they are more exciting and athletic than the team on the floor from billings? do some research, and you'd be amazed to see the percentages in all of college and pro football and basketball. blacks dominate. here is what drives me crazy though...especially as a cat fan. just because you are black, does not mean you are better. sure, there are great football players in the country. but there was a stretch that it seemed like every cat coach thought if you were black and not from montana, you were a stud, then we get stuck with these 5'7" cornerbacks from cali that leave the team in a year. meanwhile um lands some farmboy from montana who goes on to be a stud. i think for people of my age group(late teens-mid twenties) it is a given that the black dudes we hang with are unbelievable athletes. and for every nick dissly or matt dloughy, there are a 100 black kids doing the same athletic crap that they can do, and we think they are so amazing! and, while we're being honest, who hasn't turned ona basketball game, saw 1 white kid with 9 black guys, and silently prayed that he made his shot, or played defense, or generally didn't make a fool of himself. even in the nba, you expect the whites guys to do something dumb, and the black guys do get you jumping out of your seat! just the way i see it.

This was a great post! The exact point I was getting at, I was not saying that just because your black that you are better than white kids, but that overall black kids are more athletic and quick than any other race! I want the best players on my team whether they be white or black. But I think that we need to explore with more black athletes on our teams!

Krysko has recruited 4 players for next year and 3 of them are black, im not saying that matters but maybe he realizes something....

City,

You are correct you didn't start the thread, perhaps I overreacted when I jumped you on it. I admit I have seen this inner city stuff from you so many times I kind of lost it, sorry about that.
Montana hasn't produced stellar black women's palyers because there haven't been any in MT to recruit. have you been in CA so long you don't understand the demographics of MT.

As for only having Hollie Tyler from Idaho I think the case cold be made there are better players in MT. Case in point, if you recall the days of June Daugherty at Boise and Ted Anderson at ISU, you would remember there were a couple of times there were more MT girls on their rosters that ID girls. ISU, NAU, WSU, Gonzaga, Boise St, UW, ASU, and others still recruit MT heavily. They could easily recruit the "inner city" kids but they know how good a lot of these MT girls are. The talent level is very good and getting better.

The ones not playing Pac 10 and BSC are making their mark nationally at Western, Carroll, and Northern.

Rob is colorblind as you know and yes he would recruit black players. It isn't a guarantee of success though, take a look at msu, Potera brought in black players from Texas. They didn't fit in for one reason or the other, some of that probably Potera herself.

As for Vicki Austin, I don't need to ask Shannon about her as I watched her play and know her fairly well. She was hand delivered to MT though as you know, she wasn't recruited. That being said it woul dbe great to have another Vicki Austin, just for the type of person she is, let alone her basketball talents.

I have a lot of confidence in Selvig. He seems to do pretty well. Understatement of the year!

oh me.

this thread is soooooooooo.... interesting. so very.... white on white. i wonder... what would misses ci-tay say? shove a hypodermic in 'em, they're done?

so many thing's i've got to know....

one must also ask the question of the 'black girl' recruitment paradigm, 'just how much of a minority are these girls going to be, anyway?'... as you know, there is a 'population' of black guys playing hoops and football at UM, that at least numbers in the teens. the 'population' of black gals playing sports at UM is bound to be less significant. just how 'alone' would a recruit wanna be???? i might dig it, ci-tay might dig it, ronbo-ette might dig it (grizslackeryawn doesn't dig nuthin'), but really, how many black chicks (of the hoop-playing variety)really want to be the lone token at UM? not many, i would guess. it has gotta be easier for the men, as, well, there are more of 'em.

filet away.

Does that count?

Vicki Austin-CA
Mandy Morales-from MT
Tam Guardipee-from MT
Malia Kipp-from MT
LeAnn Montes-from MT
Brooklyn Lorenzen-Oregon

I am sure I have missed someone.

Sierra Schildt and Aimee Montes.

The above response, very quickly reminded me of something Jules said to Brett in Pulp Fiction..."ENGLISH, MOTHER*UCKER! DO-YOU-SPEAK-IT?"

There have been alot of stupid topics on egriz. But this one is the dumbest!!!!!

To quote Ray Naggens, New Orleans Mayor
"If you believe that, you must be stuck on STUPID!!!"

Why is it stupid to call into question the talent level that is recruited at Montana. Are you all so racist that you think we shouldn't bring in any African American girls that could take us past the first round. Watch the teams with the black girls soar in the tourney.

I'm sorry but these Montana girls will never ever ever take the girls team to the next level. Fact of life! They just ain't good enough, live with it.

DuCharme....
I believe that was Simarron Schildt...not Sierra...by the way...she was an absolutely gorgeous gal and one of my favorite Lady Griz (considering I'm an old Bengal fan from Idaho). She used to take my breath away when she'd come into the game...(where are my heart meds!). :thumb:
