Selvig is playing better inside defense, but still needs some work with guys posting him up. Offensively, we are not missing Qvale as much as we are on the boards and defense.
Fortunately Ward, Steward, and Jamar are all effective paint scorers in the right matchups. It has been very intelligent coaching strategy using those guys effectively, depending on matchups. Also spreading the court out really helps these guys in their matchups. Granted, our game cannot count on one guy putting up great post numbers like we had with Kamar, Strait, then Qvale.
Last season Tinkle started to us Ward, Steward, and Jamar against smaller/weaker players, and the GRIZ have learned to use them even more often this season.
Defensively, and on the boards, we are nowhere close in those areas as we were with Qvale. Defensively, we are relying more on pressure, and forcing turnovers, verses paint intimidation. To be honest, over the last 6 games, I don't recall better perimeter defense than we have been getting. GRIZ perimeter defense is rolling, and without the best it has been at any time I can recall. Rebounding wise, it is rebounding by committee. Everyone contributes their share with rebounding. I feel rebounding is by far what needs the most work on this season.
Reader's return would be helpful. Until then, our paint defense is very dependent on Selvig doing a consistent job. I do think Jamar and Steward get their fair share of blocks though.
