From the Kaimin:
University of Montana basketball player Kevin Henderson was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol on Sunday evening.
According to University Police Sergeant Ward DeWitt, Henderson, 20, was driving near campus when a University Police officer saw him drive through a stop sign and stop in the middle of the intersection. The officer pulled Henderson over and, after smelling alcohol on his breath, administered a field sobriety test.
The officer took Henderson to the Missoula City Police department, where he was given a Breathalyzer test. DeWitt said Henderson’s blood-alcohol concentration was above .08.University Police contacted Peggy Kuhr, vice president of integrated communications, and Kent Haslam, athletic director for the University of Montana, about the incident Sunday night. Haslam said that Henderson was given a notice to appear in court. The University is waiting for Henderson’s court date before deciding if he violated UM’s code of conduct for athletes.
“The student-athlete code of conduct is pretty specific,” Haslam said. “It’s a category 2 violation. We’ll look at that suspension from playing.”
Wayne Tinkle, the head coach for men’s basketball at UM, said that Henderson will have to go through the athlete code of conduct process before he is allowed to continue playing for UM.
“He has worked himself into a having a pretty good role in our team,” Tinkle said. “But that’s the least of my concern . . . The team will move forward.”
