Kent Haslam

Congratulations to Kent and thanks to President Engstrom for choosing the right person for the job. Kent is that person. I've had the privilege of working with him through the GSA and was pulling for him all along. I intend to express my appreciation and support for this decision directly to President Engstrom. I am confident in Kent's ability to lead UM athletics and look forward to working with him and his administration through my involvement with the GSA. I'd encourage all Griz fans to get involved with their local GSA chapters. Let's work together to improve and support Grizzly athletics now and into the future. Go Griz!

Dear Griz Nation:

I am so honored to serve as the next Director of Athletics at The University of Montana. Missoula and UM have become a special place for my family and me these past seven years. I couldn't be more proud for the opportunity to serve the University and all of you in this new role.

My vision is to serve our student-athletes and the institution by operating a department that is anchored in integrity and focused on academic success, athletic excellence and community service. I know the coaches and staff share in that vision. I know the student-athletes share in that vision. I look forward to further integrating the Athletic Department into the overall mission of The University of Montana.

We often say "We Are Montana." The statement is displayed prominently at Washington-Grizzly Stadium, in our gymnasiums, and on Athletic Department promotional materials. But what does it really mean? Here's my answer: It means we are honest, we are champions, we are disciplined, we are leaders, we are students, we are unified, and we are driven. I expect all of us in the Athletic Department to be ambassadors of this great university and lead with integrity.

I ask for your help as we build for the future. We will work to seek private support to improve training and study facilities for our student-athletes. We will work to seek private support for additional scholarships. We will work to graduate our students and to be champions on and off the field.

I look forward to sharing my vision with you, listening to you and working with you. Let's get this done together. We are Montana!

Kent Haslam, University of Montana Athletic Director

i'd rather not have an athletic director who needs to resort to endless and predictable 'power phrases' to define his goals and vision, but perhaps that is all there is left these days. it seems very un-montanan, though. otherwise, i'll reserve judgement other than to say i agree with mr. spanky's assessment.

Brian Schweitzer for AD? Conrad Burns for AD?. They are pretty folksy guys.

Disappointing choice. Probably only ranked 3rd in qualifications. I would suspect RE would also want someone he felt he could prod as needed, and perhaps outsiders didnt fit that bill - especially well qualified ones.

In the end though, who is really surprised? This was an obvious choice from the get go.

Anybody know what sort of a contract UM offered Haslam? That's the one thing that concerned me about this whole recruitment. No way was anybody worth his salt gonna move his family to Missoula for a one or two-year deal.

I'm sure he could be had for the cheapest amount of money.....and that played into the decision I would guess.

Right. But now the ass-kissers among us have a more convenient target. They know that the devil you know, is better than the devil you don't know. :ugeek:

If this guy was such a hot item, why didn't he move on a long time ago? He could have been AD in some major athletic program. We needed a national search for this?

Growler logic ... The University of Montana recently interviewed four candidates for AD. One of the four came to the top as being the best and most qualified individual to fill the position. However, Mr Haslam is currently on the staff at the University so it was the committees decision to go off campus and select an individual of lesser talents and abilities. Sounds just like G1 logic.

Typical clueless pedestrian fan. Isn't it simply AMAZING that the inside candidate for every Grizzly athletic job is the best by far! One wonders how these other athletic programs even survive!

He almost did - nearly had the NAU AD job in December 2011.

But he was passed up by a second-rate FCS program which is not even close to UM in any aspect, yet we can't wait to hire him. Thanks for proving our point, Mel2.

Point being, the right guy for the UM job who will move the athletic department forward, yes indeed - point proven.

I'm excited for the future leadership of our athletic department under Kent, it will rise to new heights, I have no doubt of that.

i'd just prefer plain old rational, with the person's enthusiasm expressed in normal terms, not in saccharine-coated catch phrases.

Actually was on his way there to accept the job when the shit with O'Day and Pflu hit. Was called as he was on his way, and said they were going to do something else as a result. But I am sure you knew that, as well connected as you are.

Did anyone expect anyone different? This was a typical UM "National Search". Trouble is, it was a Griz Nation search, not a U.S. Nation search.
Then one would think It should work out Great for Griz Nation, if you actually believed you were part of Griz Nation that is.

I am much more a part of it that you are. You embarrass Griz Nation routinely with your childish obsession with the Bobcats.
I will stick up for Growler. He is and we all are part of the Griz Nation, except for the kittie lovers.

Why don't you whiners stand behind the man now and let him perform his job for a couple years and then judge him on his job performance instead of forming a lynch mob on day 1????

JFC, some of you people make me sick. What a bunch of sand laden vagina pussies!
