Kent Haslam

Growler, is there anything you do not bitch, moan, grumble, and complain about? I find it hard to believe that you could be married, but if you are, she must be a blind, deaf, mute angel. :coffee:

Congratulations KH! The best choice. And Growler1 and his stinky hand are part of GrizNation just no one cares about what he has to say. A member without a voice...

Anybody know what sort of a contract UM offered Haslam? That's the one thing that concerned me about this whole recruitment. No way was anybody worth his salt gonna move his family to Missoula for a one or two-year deal.

"Kent rose to the top"? We heard the same exact comments when Hauck and O'Day were hired. Not too hard to "rise to the top" when you have intimate knowledge of the program, and all other candidates do not. That doesn't mean he would be the best hire. Look at O'Day and Hauck. They are the PRIMARY REASONS that our program is in the mess that it is in. Yet, the both "rose to the top" during the interview process.

Actually we didn't hear that on O'Day, there was lots of grumbling about him having the least impressive public interview. I talked to someone recently who used to be an AD and she said that Kent really impressed her and she was at first worried that he was the token inside hire guy, but after hearing him speak she didn't feel that way, in fact quite the opposite.

Hauck's hire he did rise to the top and all he did was take the Griz to the NC 3 times and not lose a single conference game in 4 seasons.

I do not know Mr. Haslem personally so I will defer to others here that feel he was the best choice for the job. Congratulations & Good Luck going forward Mr. Haslem.

I am plagued by one question though. That is how does President Engstrom justify sending the Athletic Department in a different direction from Jim O'Day when he hires an individual within that system?

This is no slight toward Mr. Haslem, but I do question, again, the validity of the reasons we have been publicly given for Jim O'Day's dismissal.

The University of Montana named Kent Haslam its new athletic director on Wednesday, ending a search that lasted several months and stirred speculation on who would take the program into the future.
Haslam, who served as the university’s associate AD for development with the UM Foundation, will start his new job Sept. 17.

“I believe Kent Haslam is the right person to lead the University of Montana athletic program into one of national distinction for athletics, academics and campus and community involvement,” said UM President Royce Engstrom.

Haslam was one of four finalists who recently interviewed on campus. He interviewed as a finalist this month with applicants from the University of Hawaii-Manoa, Washington State University and the University of Texas-Pan American.

“I am honored to be named the new director of athletics at UM,” Haslam said in a release Wednesday morning. “I have tremendous respect for the tradition and history of this great University and look forward to helping advance the overall mission of UM.”

A press conference is slated at UM at noon.

Haslam has worked for the UM Foundation since January 2006, directing and managing all fundraising activities for the university’s intercollegiate athletics department.

He managed a portfolio of more than 150 donors, helping solicit and secure seven-figure gifts to athletics and joint gifts that benefited other programs across campus. The university said he also was a key team member for funding recent expansions and improvements to Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

“I believe strongly in the role that college athletics plays on a university campus – a role that unites, builds pride and serves the student-athletes and community,” Haslam said. “I look forward to advancing a vision focused on academic success, athletic excellence and community service.”

Dear Griz Nation:

I am so honored to serve as the next Director of Athletics at The University of Montana. Missoula and UM have become a special place for my family and me these past seven years. I couldn't be more proud for the opportunity to serve the University and all of you in this new role.

My vision is to serve our student-athletes and the institution by operating a department that is anchored in integrity and focused on academic success, athletic excellence and community service. I know the coaches and staff share in that vision. I know the student-athletes share in that vision. I look forward to further integrating the Athletic Department into the overall mission of The University of Montana.

We often say "We Are Montana." The statement is displayed prominently at Washington-Grizzly Stadium, in our gymnasiums, and on Athletic Department promotional materials. But what does it really mean? Here's my answer: It means we are honest, we are champions, we are disciplined, we are leaders, we are students, we are unified, and we are driven. I expect all of us in the Athletic Department to be ambassadors of this great university and lead with integrity.

I ask for your help as we build for the future. We will work to seek private support to improve training and study facilities for our student-athletes. We will work to seek private support for additional scholarships. We will work to graduate our students and to be champions on and off the field.

I look forward to sharing my vision with you, listening to you and working with you. Let's get this done together. We are Montana!

i'd rather not have an athletic director who needs to resort to endless and predictable 'power phrases' to define his goals and vision, but perhaps that is all there is left these days. it seems very un-montanan, though. otherwise, i'll reserve judgement other than to say i agree with mr. spanky's assessment.

Did anyone expect anyone different? This was a typical UM "National Search". Trouble is, it was a Griz Nation search, not a U.S. Nation search.

GFY you short little prick...you don't even know Kent, but I can assure you he would think you are a total POS, cause you are. :loser:

Well if it's un-montanan then does he count as an outside hire?

well, since the guy who hired him (engstrom) comes off as pretty un-montanan, too... no.

Side note: For anyone who was at either the '95 or '96 Championship games, at Marshall, should hate that "WE ARE MONTANA" is now become the U's new marketing ploy. I heard enough of WE ARE MARSHALL to make me puke, especially painful in '96. It has been around here for 2 years and is being jammed down our throats similar to the Pre-game yawnfest that we are subject to each home game. The creativity and originality of the gameday activities is lacking at best. At least GRIZ NATION seemed to develop on its own and then the marketing people got involved. Maybe time for a new marketing team with some fresh ideas.

Thank you for your time, please go back to your bickering.

Growler logic ... The University of Montana recently interviewed four candidates for AD. One of the four came to the top as being the best and most qualified individual to fill the position. However, Mr Haslam is currently on the staff at the University so it was the committees decision to go off campus and select an individual of lesser talents and abilities. Sounds just like G1 logic.
