Kennesaw State to FBS

I don't know any details, but UM needs to study what James Madison did to ramp up into FBS. Maybe it won't be possible for Montana (population, enrollment, relevant teams nearby, etc.), but they obviously did something right ... already moving into the FBS top-25.

Of interest tomorrow: JMU is playing at Georgia Southern. GS also started out pretty well after their move up, but they've lagged a bit recently.

I think the biggest difference between UM and JMU/ App/ etc. is population and recruiting territory. Seems most of the schools that have moved up successfully have access to a lot of local talent. Boise feels like the closest model UM would need to study, though even Boise has a metro population of 800,000 (though I also have no idea how many BSU players are from the immediate area without looking it up).

I posted in another thread, but one thing they did was have much higher student fees for athletics. UM full time students pay $77 per semester while JMU students pay $1,150 per semester.

Yeah, I did answer the question. You just didn’t like the answer. The FBS. Move up to it. I don’t care where. Teams do it almost monthly. Footprint and history are excuses from an old fashioned way of thinking that has allowed us to overstay our welcome and will trap us in the end. Eat the trash in the CUSA for a year or two, just do something.

Still, we have to have somewhere to move up to, and I don't see where that is right now. Either a conference has to want us, or we'd have to create a new FBS conference while convincing 7 or more schools to move up alongside us. Maybe it's possible, maybe it's not, I don't know, but I see no evidence that any FBS conference would currently be interested in us, especially right now as the MWC is likely waiting to see what happens with the PAC in the next couple of years.

I'd love to see the proposals we've put together for FBS conferences. "Here's why you should add UM for football". Certainly, we've done tons of them and got beat out by the recent movers up. We're not just sitting at the park waiting for Gwen Stefani to walk by and ask for our hand in marriage, right? That would be what an idiot would do.

Wow. Are you like “on the committee”?? That’s EXACTLY what’s happening….it’s almost like you’re THERE.

Kennesaw officially announced its move today. They went from having no football program in 2015 to FBS in 2022. That’s a forward thinking university and athletic department.

So other than waiting for Gwen, what should be done? Because I totally agree with all the arguments for moving up. Of course the administration is totally in the "waiting for Gwen" mode and why shouldn't they be (I'm not sure it is idoitic). Currently the administration has no incentive to move up because 20,000 or so blindly support the Griz beating Northwestern Bumwad State 55 -3. Stands are full so why rock the boat. I'd wager that 20,000 would watch the Griz play an out of conference schedule of Sentinal, Hellgate, and Big Sky for a while. And its another Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirst Down Grizzlies.

So what can those who want to move up and watch some competitive football really do? Until fans, season ticket holders and donors, and that would include many posters on e-griz, quit supporting the sub-par excuse that FCS has become, and make that clear to the administration, we can all go pound sand and take it out on the significant other of choice. And just to make it clear I have no idea whether withdrawing support would actually work either - might make some like me feel better about being proactive but I actually don't think a whole lot of Montana folks care whether we compete with Colorado State or College of N. Idaho. But right now too many want it both ways. If you want another FCS championship then I think the time is coming when you may be very happy - right after NDSU and SDSU move up and the Cats source of PED's dries up. If you wan't to watch competitive football well that's another story.

Coming from you, that’s the highest of praise. Thanks pr. I’m honored.

Is MtHoops actually PR? Because in a different thread, MtHoops rushed in to defend PR's honor when I suggested PR was insecure, talking about PR in the third person. If they're actually the same person, that would be - ironically - one of the most ridiculous displays of insecurity I've ever seen.

Does it really matter? The plot thickens. I'll bet you speak with a thick French accent.

Yes.

How about quit whining on e-griz and put together a group of like minded supporters that will pledge an additionl $10-15 million every year above what is already being pledged? I'm sure that would get someone's attention!

If only I were a billionaire.

Wish them well. Given a decade or so they may end up in a crappy bowl game. Though regardless of their football fate, it’s a rapidly growing school in suburban Atlanta. No doubt it makes sense for them. Maybe Montana can get one of the two remaining openings inCUSA, or the European football league. Either way I can rack up plenty of frequent flyer miles attending away games

In what universe are teams LEAVING the MWC or pac 12 to play with a bunch of FCS move ups?

Exactly ZERO, which is why the Griz need to do everything they can to get into the MWC.

A crappy bowl game compared to a so called NC played in a soccer field that few watch.

Assuming Kennesaw will struggle for years is wishful thinking and Griz hubris, as well as an extension of the insecurities Griz fans and athletic department administrators have had for years that have contributed to stagnation and a shortsighted determination to remain FCS . Kennesaw will probably find success very quickly in a very winnable C-USA, and honestly they deserve it. Facts and optics matter. Kennesaw is on its way up while we continue to stagnate and spin our wheels. Kennesaw had the largest enrollment in the FCS and leveraged that to drive its athletics goals which were achieved in a resounding success. They only started their football team in 2015 and between then and now had more playoff appearances and success than UM even with the tradition and facilities advantage UM had. Now they’re moving up and talking stadium expansion and facilities improvements. They have an administration who was proactive, set goals and expectations of becoming FBS ( similar to tarleton state) and they went out and MADE THINGS HAPPEN! Now they will be moving on to bigger and better things while we continue to flounder, with an administration and fan base whose predominant expectation and goal is another FCS championship, which is shortsighted and a little sad given the the watered down FCS landscape today. Add to Kennesaw a Delaware program who also looks to have one foot out the door and the picture becomes even more clear; the FCS is a sinking ship, and a husk of what it once was, and should we continue to flounder we will be left at the helm captaining the ship all the way to the bottom.

Some of the bottom dwellers probably would, just to have a chance to win a game.
