Justin Hartman

Yeah, Hartman is a great player and he was one of the better players at CMR during their run. But that doesn't mean the guy isn't a dillhole. When CMR played Bozeman, he always seemed to be the cockiest player on the field. So just because the guy is a good player doesn't justify his attitude.

He isnt good at all on the collegiate level and should learn when to shut him mouth

After reading a lot of idiotic statements above I had to make some corrections.

Hartman is arguably one of the best high school athletes that Montana has ever had. Look at his stats from CMR from any sport and then tell me that the kid couldn't play on your intramural team. That's ridiculous. He actually didn't look too bad out on the court considering that when I talked to him in August he hadn't touched a basketball in over a year. To not respect his accomplishments and say that he "sucks" is just ignorant.

Cox actually blew past our point guards a few times but turned it over once he got into the trees. He is just as quick as many D1 guards, but just can't seem to control the t.o's.

Eric Van Vilet is probably one of the nicest people on the campus.

Montana needs to recognize who is shooting the ball well and cover the 3 better. Morales and Terry Houser both were 4-6 from 3 I believe.

Hartman was a very good high school player, but to call him "one of the best high school athletes that Montana has ever had" is the overstatement of the year. Ever! Now that's Bill Brasky type of stuff...

Seems to me that Justin Hartman really isn't liked on this message board outside a couple of you. My question is what have you done to slam a good athlete like Hartman for. My guess is nothing!

Get to practice, Justin!

Not tryin to jock Hartman but I believe I stated that he is ARGUABLY one of the best high school athletes we've had. Here's my argument.

3 time State AA Basketball champion, 2000, 2001, 2002

2 time State Basketball Tourney MVP, 2000, 2001
---Won the MVP Sophomore and Junior years. Should have won it his senior year after they beat Bozeman in the chipper but the tourney was being held in Bozo (Belgrade) and the media gave it to Dissly. Dissly had a good tourney but Hartman's team won and Hartman outplayed him in the chipper.

1 time State AA Football champ 2001
All-State Football player (Quarterback)

Undefeated as a Grizzly starter....that's the real impressive stat, jk...

Does anyone have a copy of his letter leaving the Griz Football Team?

Grizzly QB Hartman leaves team

By JON KASPER of the Missoulian
A letter University of Montana quarterback Justin Hartman e-mailed to the media and Grizzly coaches Thursday wasn't an April Fools' Day joke.

Hartman, a sophomore from Great Falls Russell, announced in a one-page letter that he has left the program.

"As of April 1, 2004, I Justin Hartman, regretfully inform you that due to the current situation and direction of this program I have decided to leave the football team and pursue other interests,'' he wrote. "When I was recruited and signed to the Grizzly football squad by Joe Glenn, I was brought in to be a passing quarterback. My scheduled plan of participation, in which I fully understood and agreed to, was to grayshirt, redshirt, be a backup and then play.

"After my grayshirt year, Coach Glenn left Missoula to follow another coaching venture. Coach Bobby Hauck was hired in his place under the pretense that he was going to throw first and throw often. None of which has been true.''

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Hartman, who was pressed into action last season because of injuries to Craig Ochs and Jeff Disney, said in the letter and in a phone interview from his home in Great Falls that he had been lied to by Hauck and other coaches, and that Hauck had made disparaging remarks about his abilities to people close to the program.

"Since the football season has ended I have heard of, and responded to rumors that have been relayed to me by sources very close to the football program,'' Hartman wrote. "These rumors, from Coach Hauck, were reported as follows: 'I never would have recruited Justin Hartman out of high school.' 'I have lost faith in Justin's arm.' Comments such as these, I feel, should not be said about a player behind their back, especially by their leaders and coaches.''

Hartman said he had yet to speak personally with Hauck about his decision to leave. Hauck said he saw the letter Thursday.

"I haven't spoken to Justin, so it's hard for me to make a comment,'' Hauck said. "If he has decided to leave, we wish him well and appreciate the work he gave us while he was here.''

Hauck had no further comment, other than: "He needs to come in and talk to me.'''

Hartman saw limited action in last week's first scrimmage, taking reps with the No. 3 offense. He threw just two passes, completing none with one interception. Hartman said he was also frustrated about the lack of live reps he received during the first two weeks of spring drills.

"When I had my fall meeting with (offensive coordinator Rob) Phenicie, he told me that I was going to get a chance during spring to run with the ones and twos and show what I could do,'' Hartman said. "He said there would be days where Craig and Jeff wouldn't even take snaps during practice and I'd take them all. It's halfway through spring and I've yet to take one. I've gotten three live snaps in 11-on-11 during practice and three in seven-on-seven. How are you supposed to get any better? They told me I'd get more than a chance to show what I could do.''

Hartman came to UM in the fall of 2002 but did not officially join the team until January of 2003. Hartman was recovering from a knee injury sustained in his senior season at CMR and was forced to grayshirt. Hartman had a redshirt season available to him last fall, but had to start the Idaho game when Disney and Ochs were out with injuries.

Hartman completed 7-of-12 passes for 92 yards with a 7-yard TD run in a 41-28 win over the Vandals. True freshman Kyle Samson also saw time at quarterback, running a surprise option attack. The Griz rolled up 344 rushing yards against the Vandals.

"It was very disheartening to go and play in that game and do what I thought it was they wanted me to do,'' Hartman said. "We won in one of the most dominating fashions. We beat a Division I-A team. We flat dominated those guys and I did not receive any credit for the win. The option was credited with what won it. Kyle did a great job and I was happy for him. But to have nothing said about what you did, it was very disheartening.''

Hartman started the next week in a 17-14 win over Cal Poly. He completed 2 of his 3 passing attempts for 17 yards. Ochs returned against the Mustangs and engineered all three scoring drives.

"In that matchup I was confined to handing the ball off before an injured, and still recovering Craig Ochs came in to replace me, and was encouraged and allowed to throw the football,'' Hartman wrote. "I question why Coach Hauck would jeopardize Craig's health during a non-conference game, and when the conference season was just a week away.''

Hartman appeared in five games, completing 9-of-15 passes for 109 yards with no interceptions or touchdowns.

He said he believes the coaches have given up on him.

"It is obvious to me that the Montana coaching staff means to pass me by, and I question why I was not given the same opportunities as others to succeed, and was instead forced only into situations to fail,'' Hartman wrote. "It is shameful and disrespectful that an athlete from the state of Montana would be treated in fashion.''

Hartman would not say that the program is headed in the wrong direction.

"I wouldn't say they are spiraling downward,'' he said. "We won nine games last year and made it to the playoffs. You can't say anything negative about that.''

The loss of Hartman leaves the Grizzlies with just Ochs and Disney as scholarship quarterbacks. Both are entering their senior seasons. Freshmen Rory Cordial and Drew Hedrick are walk-ons. Cole Bergquist, who signed with UM in February, will join the program in August.

Hartman has yet to receive his release, but he doesn't think that will be a problem. Hartman said he will complete this semester at Montana and "keep all doors open.''

"Dave Dickenson has always been an idol of mine, and I was recruited to try and continue the style of play that he and all of the other Grizzly quarterbacks have brought to the field,'' Hartman wrote. "I am a Grizzly, but this is not Grizzly football.

"I have given everything I have to the football program, required and not, and I now believe that there is nothing left for me to do with the opportunities afforded me. I was always told that one of my greatest attributes as an athlete and quarterback was that I was a winner and that I never quit. I did battle to the end and I am a winner.''

Just because I posted the letter doesn't mean I like Hartman one bit. I simply posted it because someone asked about it

I like his confidence. That attitude can take a team a long way. We would have played in the national championship this year had Hauck not driven him away.

Thats BS, Mung. He couldn't even claim the starting QB job at an NAIA school. I watched him play in Butte against Tech in both teams season opener, and thought to myself man that kid has no arm. Cole Bergquist would put up Emmert like numbers against NAIA competition!

Mung,

You really should seek professional help!

I don't think anyone was saying he isn't :) Did you see the look he gave one of the Western players though after the hard foul on Swift? Nice people can get pissed enough to want to kick a little ass occasionally too :P Honestly I thought it was great to see that...and there were some pretty hard fouls towards the end of the game by Western players.

Van Vliet played very well too for the time he played against Western. He seems to be shaking off the rust caused by not playing last year & is looking better and better. Its going to be pretty exciting to see these two highschool teammates (Swift & Van Vliet) play for the next few years here..add in Sharp to that equation who I believe played on the same AAU team as Swift and Van Vliet, and you got three guys that have already had quite a bit of experience playing BB with eachother.

As for Hartman...he sure didn't handle leaving the program in a very mature fashion...had he left and not tried to make a public scene out of it, a lot of the people heckling him at the game probably wouldn't have done it.

I also was not trying to state that Van Vliet is a bad kid. I was just saying w/that stare & his size I would not want to mess w/him. As for that Hartman letter it gave me the same chuckle it did 2 years, what a tool. Hows that passing attack in Dillon working out for you Justin?

Are you looking for a white Ron Artest? Someone who is ready to call you out. Someone who does not have the class to leave with a head held high. Someone who can't thank the coach for giving him a shot and letting him be on the team. If you are looking for the white Ron Artest he may be Justin Hartman. And I loved Ron Artest.

So fifteen years down the road Uncle Justin Hartman will be sitting with his nephew Kip and will be saying, " If Coach Hauck puts me in there in the fourth quarter we'd be national champions. I could throw the pigskin a quarter mile." Then as his other nephew Napoleon is riding his bike Uncle Justin throws a piece of steak hitting Napoleon in the face.

Quote of the week, right there.
