I have read the thread, and Im positive Pflu burned the redshirt, then played him a few times after Selle was injured.
You can't get the concept that a player has five years to play four? The redshirt is not limited to the first year. If a player plays as a true freshman, a redshirt remains available for any subsequent year. The Growler term of "burning" a redshirt by a freshman playing, is misleading and seems to have gotten you. A redshirt is used or "burned" only when the player uses it - completes one of the five years without playing. While the freshman year is by far the most common use of the redshirt, several examples have been posted of players using their redshirts in later years that you must have missed. Example Tripp, last year; example Pennington, etc. The former burned a reshirt his third year; the latter, his second. Lex Hilliard had a redshirt available when he had the Achilles incident, so he did not have to go the medical redshirt application route, which can be difficult. His fourth year. We likely would have never seen Jimmy Wilson back had he used his redshirt. Instead, he only had to apply for a one year special extension of the five years; I'm sure two would have been rejected.
JJ used elligibility as a true freshman and as a true sophmore. If he transfers and redshirts 2012, he will only then burn his redshirt and have his two years of ellibility remaining.
