JR Nelson and Nate Harris

What a season these two have had. Especially over the current 4 game winning streak, these guys have been incredibly clutch. Facing off against some of the most talented WRs they've seen all season on ISU, EWU, MSU, and SDSU's roster these two guys have been on fire! And it helps heading in to this NDSU game that we know these two guys can be put on an island against any NDSU WR and they'll do a damn fine job - leaving more help for the LBs to focus on the NDSU ground game.

Consider their stats over the 4 game streak:

ISU:
Harris - 8 tackles, 1 INT, 1 PBU
Nelson - 4 tackles, 1 INT, 1 TD, flipped the ball to Johnson on the missed FG for the game winner TD

EWU:
Harris - 3 tackles, 1 PBU
Nelson - 5 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 INT, 1 TD, 2 PBUs

MSU:
Harris - 7 tackles, 1 forced fumble
Nelson - 2 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 1 PBU

SDSU:
Harris - 6 tackles, 1.5 TFLs, 1 PBU
Nelson - 6 tackles, 3 PBUs

Before the season some posters were really down on our corners, but through the season these guys have really shown they're a great pair. This is the best starting combo at corner we've had since Tru and Roots in 2011 (not as good, I'd say, but the next best).

I think these two got over-looked a bit in the all-conference voting as well with Harris getting 3rd team and Nelson getting an honorable mention. But that helped them to play with a chip on their shoulder I'd say and they stepped up big time against SDSU's stud WR this last weekend.

With the safety play not being as consistent as we'd hoped it's great to see how these guys have really risen to the occasion! I'm bummed we're losing Harris to graduation but damned glad Nelson will be back - he could be one of the most elite corners in the Big Sky next year.
This ^ thanks for posting they have been clutch!

When you have corners who can live on an island it adds so many options to your defense. What I especially like is that on blitzes they were playing press coverage and jamming the receivers. This prevented use of the outside receivers as hot reads. What killed us was the tight end(s) getting open. If we could find a way to lock that down, Holmes and company would get about 2X the sacks.

Have to agree, they played great. I was one of the ones at the beginning of the year that listed them as being our poor spot on defense and they really rose to the occasion and made me look the fool. Congrats on a great year.

Pass the crow please, guilty also.

Agree they've been a huge reason for our success....going into NDSU knowing these two can lock down their recievers also allows us to bring Sanders up further to help out with that run. Having Sanders around the line with his SIZE and ATHLETICISM will be HUUUGE against the NDSU run game!

KVA and Tyronne have gotten all the attention this year, but these two have really been the backbone of our pass defense. Their performance against EWU was unbelievable.

Agreed - and MSU, their TE did most of the damage on the defense in the middle of the field, the WRs were kept in check... for the most part.

This is what I worry that NDSU is going to be doing all game.
