Joining the Mountain West would run an $8MM - $9MM annual deficit - can we overcome that?

Wouldn't surprise me with SDSU now that NDSU moved. North Dakota and Tarlington State are also pushing to move to FBS, with limited spots open in realignment you can't afford to wait around. I think UM football should stay FCS and rest of the sports move to the MWC. You have a better chance of making money/revenue with MBB and WBB in the MWC than the BSC.
Splitting up the sports with some going to the MWC and some staying in the Big Sky is unlikely for UM. It would either have to be all sports move up to the MWC or football moves up and the rest go to the Summit. The Big Sky won’t sponsor some sports while some others move to the MWC. North Dakota and SDSU are easier to go to the MWC as football only because their other sports are already in the Summit.

Where exactly are you guys seeing that SDSU and North Dakota are both trying to get into the MWC? I have not seen one thing anywhere that suggests this is imminent anytime soon. I think it's logical to assume those schools aren't happy that NDSU left them behind and they have aspirations to join them, but there's been nothing to suggest that the MWC is going to add these guys anytime soon. At least from what I've seen any way. And the MWC doesn't need to add anymore Football only members. They already have NIU and NDSU which gives them 10 total Football members. If they were to add anybody else then logic would say it would be more full time members rather then having all these scattered affiliate members.

I have heard that the Mountain West wants to get to 12 members. Who could they add as a fulltime member that would bring more to the conference than SDSU for football which is the biggest sport for the whole state of South Dakota and UC Irvine for other sports? Montana and Montana State are an obvious choice if funding wasn’t an issue but it is. This could be the last best chance to move up though at the same time.

I think it's time UM and msu go to the legislature next session and ask for more funding to help make the move. If SDSU and/or UND were to move up then it's time to put the full court press on. I'm ready to get Basketball and our Olympic sports out of the Big Sky now and I'll be ready to move Football when the G5 Playoff happens as well. For the record, I have not heard anything about UND or SDSU to the MWC. Tarleton has been floated for quite a while now, but I think they're done adding for now.

Tarleton would make sense for football only too but I haven’t heard anything from them about being interested in moving up, albeit the Big Sky and MVFC are the only FCS conferences I pay much attention to.

We should be initiating the Full Court press NOW, better to be Proactive then Reactive. Olys in the Summit + Football in the MWC would be a great setup for us, would be cool to play the Dakotas every year for Oly sports along with Wyoming, NDSU, Air Force etc. in Football.

If we could only get into the MWC for Football then I'd like to see us move all our other sports into the WCC. They have started adding public universities like UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, and Denver. That's a stronger league and could be a multi bid league for the NCAA Tourney. The Summit League is no better than the Big Sky.

The Summit League for men’s basketball atleast a lot of years is the only D1 conference as bad or worse than the Big Sky. The good news about that is it shouldn’t be all that difficult to get into. Denver is private btw.

Why are folks thinking waiting to see what happens is the best course of action. The new president, AD major donors for UM and MSU goto the BOR and legislature together and make your case. Show how much money both schools generate for the state and there city’s.

Put it on the public record. That’s what Wisconsin and Hawaii just did. Wisconsin is now getting 17 million a year from the state, Hawaii BOR agreed to give university funds. Many other examples to draw off on.

Nah, just wait a little bit for things to settle down. With the lightning speed at which governments can work, there’s no reason to rush into this thing. I say keep our powder dry until all Dakotas and most of the BSC move to the higher level of football. Hang around and see how they like it in a couple six or eight years before we go getting ahead of ourselves by even considering making a plan to explore the possibility of putting together a feasibility study to determine the expedience of making proposal to the legislature.

I think it’s out there somewhere they are really looking to move up soon. I just don’t remember where I read that
