JLM

There are ways to get JLM involved, but Cal Poly's desire not to revisit the problems they faced in 16 played a bigger role in him not getting touches. Cal Poly prefers man defense, and because they were crowding the line of scrimmage the bubble and jet sweep stuff probably weren't good schematic choices. If teams play softer, and have zone drops versus man responsibilities, then those options look a lot better.

They ran a ton of RPO stuff against Poly, moreso than they had in the prior few weeks. RPO is excellent against man because the stick and the slant routes that are common are great man beaters. As teams press the line of scrimmage to take a way fast screen these types of RPO options are better for possession.

The TE's got a bit more use against CP than they might otherwise because of that man coverage and the lack of a discernable pass rush from CP. Traditionally speaking TE routes are either quick (stick/choice/seam routes) or super slow developing (Under Sam Over Mike Routes and those types) that require pass protection and are a bit fraught with danger (small windows).

The point is that JLM and GS didn't get as much work because of what CP chose to do defensively. My guess is that we'll see a bit more JLM/GS this week against PSU because their defense (at least historically) sets up well.

Please post more. You are spot on

Yes, he always is.

And he NEVER posts enough...If he'd stop wasting his time on that "other" site and just come here he'd have more time!!! But then growler would NEVER learn anything!!! ;)

I think some of it might be we have quite a few more weapons this year and don't have to force the ball to JLM 20 times a game out of necessity.

Or maybe Delaney was calling the plays last year, he has a serious bro crush on Jerry.

He’s definitely not having the season I thought he would to this point

Maybe not an all-league start for JLM, but he's still leading the team in receptions, receiving yards, and all-purpose yards.

Punters do everything they can to kick away from him, and defenses are doing what they can to shut him down. Just opens up someone else. It's all good.

And Dalton has missed him several times when he was wide open. Maybe not surprising--JLM and his tremendous mass is probably pretty hard to spot out there--and Dalton isn't exactly Brady Gustafson, able to look right over the top of any defenders to spot receivers. ;)

JLM is also 3d in the conference in receptions per game, and 2d in punt returns. But I agree, he's a slacker.

My theory is that Bobby is not targeting the same receivers that were mainly used in the previous game. Makes the next opponent concentrate on the wrong guys.

My theory is that Bobby is attacking what he sees as the weakness of the current opponent and has zero to do with the previous game.

My theory is that your theory is correct.

Agreed. That's the key...what are the weaknesses. Any good staff will do that. There's no doubt the coaches know what they have in JLM as well. They will get him the ball. I'm surprised people haven't said he was in the doghouse for fumbling...

Well, I didn't say it, but I did think it, FWIW...

Hahahaha...I did too just before I posted that. That's why I added it at the end!

If you are going to throw the Ball. From a straight drop back, Hell get in Trips, and deal two deep, one under etc. Or get in twins and and work a back out. If you are a running team, Screens, Drags, posts, quick outs slants etc. Go Griz 4-1
