Well, since all three are underclassmen and assuming no one declares early, we are going to have plenty of time to find out!

Gubrud's a junior - he's got just 1 year left. Meier & Cookus Sophomores. Jensen an RS Frosh. So yeah there's going to be some great battles in the years ahead.

Also looking at the upcoming conference schedules too Montana plays just Davis next year, and EWU in '19 when Gubrud is gone. Unless its post-season we wont see Cookus again.

How is Cookus only a Sophomore? He won the Jerry Rice Freshmen of the year award in 2015. A.J. Hines won it last year.

I believe Cookus was out on a RS last year due to injury.

Yes I remember now. Thanks.

Yup
Much like Jordan Johnson used his red shirt in what would have been his junior year while on trial.

Yup

I heard he swallowed his vomit during a test.

I'm real impressed w/Jensen. Hoping for some maturation from the group of wr's.
O-line going to be a big question mark coming into next year. Will the young guys full of potential rise up and help pave the way?

Would like to see a more balanced offense as far as YPC.

And a new DC.

I AM NOT A STITT FAN. Have made that clear. However, I don't see us losing to the kitties this year, and with a W in bozeangeles, I don't see how he doesn't get an extension.

I love Jensen too; but can we all slow our roll on his future?

I am getting flashbacks to Beano Cook on Ron Powlus here.

Agreed. He is off to a fast start but we will need to wait to see where that takes him.

Though to jump on the love fest bandwagon...

Just imagine how many rushing yards he would have if he played running back too! :ugeek:

Too young to remember those guys, but I think Gresch has as good a head on his shoulders as a player can have. I don't see him taking his early success for granted or thinking he doesn't have to keep working every day to become a great QB. :twocents:

I like his play better than both of those guys. He’s throwing to mostly RS Freshmen and racking up those numbers.

Also how many times have we seen Jensens running ability extend drives for us. The guy doesnt look fast but hes effective.

I love having a QB that can run down in the red zone also....it brings an entirely different element that the defense must account for. Especially since he keeps it so often.

Many of us constantly complained about BG never keeping the ball to run, and now were seeing just how important that element and effective it is in Stitts offense.

Watching him cement that NoCo defender in his tracks was a thing of beauty.

less than 4 YPC is unacceptable, particulary in an offense that is predicated on spreading the defense out. Whether our YPC is due to backs not being able to read the defense, O-line not efficiently run blocking, or the lack of a TE and FB to help open things up (I think all are to blame) is open for debate.

Rushing for 3.68 YPC is awful, and will not win many (if any) games come playoff time, particularly against teams that have some semblance of a pulse on defense.

Let's see:
3.68 YPC x 3 downs = 11.04 yards and another FIRST DOWN MONTANA!!

Thus if you run the ball every play you will control the TOP and should win every game going away. 😀

That average is sucked down by guys like Favors, Hill, etc. Our top two guys (Calhoun & Lee) average 4.2 ypc. That number is perfectly acceptable...at least to me.

Fun to mess with stats in a "what if" situation. So what if Gresch started the first three games? Now I'll readily admit a few things. First off, Phillips was the guy ahead of him because he was playing better and at the time was the better QB coming out of fall camp. Secondly taking a guess at Jensen's stats in his first three games we'd have to assume he'd have a similar poor showing at UW.

So if Gresch did about the same as Phillips in the first three games, he'd add 650 yards passing, 4 TDs and 3 INTs. That would put his stat line at:

2855 passing yards / 23 passing TDs / 12 INTs / 170 rushing yards / 6 rushing TDs

Meanwhile

Gubrud: 2897 passing / 22 passing TDs / 12 INTs / 170 rushing yards / 4 rushing TDs
Cookus: 2989 passing / 20 passing TDs / 5 INTs / -35 rushing yards / 2 rushing TDs

Again... just a fun "what if" look, but it shows how bright this team's future is with Gresch if he's already playing at levels near two of the best in the conference.

To be fair Gubrud should get stats added to his for the game he missed against ND and Cookus for the game against the griz.

Actually it wouldn’t be fair. Nice try. Stats don’t include NAU with Gresch’s injury. Cookus was ejected from that game. Gubrud didn’t play against ND because he put himself above the team and got into trouble. All three missed a game during their starting careers. If you are going to try and marginalize a player, at least be smart about it.

And Jensen missed NAU. I didn’t account for added stats there for him.

4.2 is getting better, 4 and a half ypc I feel is the sweet spot. Given that there will/should be some longer rushes to account for the negative plays

Jensen is better than Gubrud right now and Cookus missed the UM game because he has the emotional maturity of a hamster. Missoula might have been too oxygen rich for a guy from the high country of Northern Arizona. Flagstaff 72,000 people, two last names.
