It's the Brawl of the Wild, Brian...

The "Brawl of the Wild" branding of the rivalry was created in 2012. That's when UM and MSU filed the phrase with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Town Pump became a sponsor sponsor in 2013. Then in 2017 the Town Pump signage appeared as part of trademarked "brawl" when Montana's ubiquitous roadside gas up, gamble and bathroom destination became exclusive sponsor.

In other words, the universities created a trademark they could sell and then found a sponsor to whom to sell it. Before Town Pump was announced as exclusive sponsor, the trademark registration was upgraded on Feb 2, 2016.

I remember when it was briefly called the "Montana Power Classic."

So now you know. It's Cat-Griz, Griz Cat to the people who value the game for anything other than merchandise. Everything else is a just a marketing ploy for selling beer cozies to schmucks.

Knowing is always better than believing.

I have a coin from the so-called “Montana Power Classic” that dates back to the late 1990s. I still called it “The Big Time Thummybutt Diddly-Doo-Ha Taint Scratch Classic” then because I wasn’t about to change it for some marketing campaign.
We probably have the same coin. I got mine at one of the blowouts in Bozeman back in the late 90's or early 2000's when I was a kid. Probably 2001, since the old lady cat fans behind us kept screaming for the overmatched cat defenders to "GET THE YO-YO!" who was running all over them.

They’re available on eBay for about $1.50.

Probably because the shipping is so cheap due to them weighing in at about 1/8 ounce. Could be mistaken for hollow plastic.

You're telling me I might be holding onto an appreciating asset?!

i don't want to use it because that 'brand' sounds trite and boring to me. i've been watching the game since the 70's, and it has always been "cat-griz" to me. "brawl of the wild" came about much later. it sounds like a frat-boy name for the game to my ears. not to answer for az, but that is why i don't want to promulgate that name. cat-griz or montana-montana state work for me. i don't like life to being reduced to commercial phrases...

Aging (Aged) fan base....

Brawl resonates with media companies - that is a fact. If the game ever stumbled onto ESPN prime time or Game Day visit....I guarantee Brawl of the Wild is how it would be marketed and previewed. Guaranteed.

cat -Griz, Griz-cat, Montana vs state....none of these are marketable in a similar way and certainly not to a single person outside of Montana.

But, hey - Merica - call it what you want.

sheep-like, lowest common denominator attitude. i prefer to call it what it is.

Right - it is a terrible idea to create a media-enticing brand to market things in order to sell stuff to the sheep...no smart organization does it.

Cat-Griz proponent here. Brawl of the Wild sounds like a bunch of old white rich dudes were thinking what the youth would call it and came up with it. Or some shitty cliche movie.
Cat-Griz even sounds way better, just rolls off the tongue, has a sort of ring to it.

...and means nothing to anyone outside the 406.

I agree, great post. I thing Griz--cat might be the dumbest sounding name of anything, ever. Reeks of inferiority complex. I don't think you'll every see a butt hurt Navy Football fan call their game Navy-Army.

The irony of you of all posters trying to throw shade about inferiority complexes is quite laughable, but probably lost on you.

Especially when it’s always been called “The Big Time Thummybutt Diddly-Doo-Ha Taint Scratch Classic” in sophisticated circles.

(This is my new passion project).
