Come on man, that’s disingenuous. Full quote he said “Brawl of the Wild, Cat-Griz, or whatever you want to call it.

I STILL call it Cat-Griz, as I’ve always hated the Brawl moniker. I think he was simply acknowledging that fact…

It's the Brawl. Why on earth would you not want to promulgate that brand? The Apple Cup, The Civil War, The Iron Bowl...good grief the list goes on and on and on.

Get on the bus AZ.

i don't want to use it because that 'brand' sounds trite and boring to me. i've been watching the game since the 70's, and it has always been "cat-griz" to me. "brawl of the wild" came about much later. it sounds like a frat-boy name for the game to my ears. not to answer for az, but that is why i don't want to promulgate that name. cat-griz or montana-montana state work for me. i don't like life to being reduced to commercial phrases...

I'm with you on that. I saw my first one in the 50s. Brawl of the Wild is stupid. It's not the brand. My out of state friends ask about the name and laugh. Almost nobody out of state and not affiliated with UM has any clue as to what it refers to. It hides the teams. I'm fine with the Apple Cup.

I have called it Griz-Cat since I was a child in the '50s. I think I just was brought up right to recognize how the name should be.

I call it “The Big Time Thummybutt Diddly-Doo-Ha Taint Scratch Classic”. Always have.

Looks like you are having a good time in Maui.

Power is out on the half of the island where I am. Bored.

Is your wife bored also?

Probably. Haven’t asked. Out of nowhere, she goes, “You haven’t heard a single word I’ve said, have you?” Super weird way to start a conversation if you ask me.

Can't take your attention away from Candy and the well hung goat?

Now, that’s a reference with which I am unfamiliar.

The "Brawl of the Wild" branding of the rivalry was created in 2012. That's when UM and MSU filed the phrase with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Town Pump became a sponsor sponsor in 2013. Then in 2017 the Town Pump signage appeared as part of trademarked "brawl" when Montana's ubiquitous roadside gas up, gamble and bathroom destination became exclusive sponsor.

In other words, the universities created a trademark they could sell and then found a sponsor to whom to sell it. Before Town Pump was announced as exclusive sponsor, the trademark registration was upgraded on Feb 2, 2016.

I remember when it was briefly called the "Montana Power Classic."

So now you know. It's Cat-Griz, Griz Cat to the people who value the game for anything other than merchandise. Everything else is a just a marketing ploy for selling beer cozies to schmucks.

Knowing is always better than believing.

Solid choice

Here's where I stayed on Maui in 1971. Our friend was good friends with the owners, the Erdmans. They still own the ranch. At that time, they owned the land on which most of Wailea was later built. Oprah now owns the ranch next to them. Pard Erdman, the owner, was a Princeton grad and rugby player. Had grown up on a ranch in Wyoming.

Aging (Aged) fan base....

Brawl resonates with media companies - that is a fact. If the game ever stumbled onto ESPN prime time or Game Day visit....I guarantee Brawl of the Wild is how it would be marketed and previewed. Guaranteed.

cat -Griz, Griz-cat, Montana vs state....none of these are marketable in a similar way and certainly not to a single person outside of Montana.

But, hey - Merica - call it what you want.

I have a coin from the so-called “Montana Power Classic” that dates back to the late 1990s. I still called it “The Big Time Thummybutt Diddly-Doo-Ha Taint Scratch Classic” then because I wasn’t about to change it for some marketing campaign.

Thank you for the knowledge.

Love it or hate it, I think it was an inspired piece of marketing. ESPN ate it up. My non-Montanan friends do as well. In fact, I think the only other one that comes close among all the rivalry games is The Worlds Largest Outdoor C O C K T A I L Party. Because like the Brawl, that's what it is. I've been and all I can recall are beautiful girls and being overserved. Significantly so. Thanks again GFL.

Ps. I find it odd that when I tried to write out C O C K T A I L in normal cadence, I got DNA Rifle. Interesting.
