It's Official: Roper coming to Montana

I wouldn't say that the starting QB's position was "promised" to Roper, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he was told it was his to lose. That's essentially what happened with both Washington and Swogger, and I wasn't very pleased with either of those two outcomes. From what I've heard to date, Roper sounds a lot like Swogger: big arm, not terribly accurate, doesn't like to run.

I'm not a huge fan of any of the three already-here quarterbacks, so I'm not pushing for any one of them. I just am not thrilled with drop-downs being assumed to be better than what we have, simply because they come from a major program.

If the tapes of Roper I've seen are representative, he's a much better runner than Swogger--Roper looks to be faster and much more mobile.

Swogger could run, but when he did, he really lumbered. While Roper is no Michael Vick, it looks like his feet are a good second option just like Cole Berquist or Johnny Montana when everyone was covered.

Here is a news flash for you-uns. A back-up former starting QB at Oregon is a hell of a lot different than a back-up former starter at WSU. Roper is clearly a superior QB than Swogger.

If Roper is as good as Swogger I'll be happy. Swogger got the Griz to the semi's. Buck up Griz fans. The Griz are lucky to have Roper coming to play for Montana. Selle showed us in Chattanooga that he is not going to take us to the promised land.

Yes, those few snaps are very indicative of his talent/potential.

Hammer, perhaps if the guy sitting next to me in Chatty wasn't screaming the whole time for Selle to come in the game, dissing CB and otherwise being obnoxious, I wouldn't feel the way I do. He, of course, shut his mouth after Selle showed what he couldn't do. Personally, I was praying for a 2000 Johnny Montana, but come on, be honest, it wasn't there. Right now, I'm not sure Selle would be the best choice for backup. Just MO, mind you.

He has a lot to prove, no one is going to tolerate a 50% completion rate as long as we have four other QBs on the bench. His receiving corps isn't going to be anywhere as good as Oregon's either.

All I know is that he's probably better than Selle.

In a lot of ways, your statement above that I've bolded is probably true. Duck receivers are undoubtedly slightly faster and quicker overall. Living out here in Oregon, though, and watching the Ducks play a bit, I saw an awful lot of dropped passes from Duck receivers last year. I didn't see any Duck receiver who had Mariani's hands, for instance.

That being said, I'm not sure what percentage of Roper's passes were flat dropped and should have been caught.

Although Roper knows he will not have the pure athleticism in receivers at UM as he did in Oregon, he is very impressed with the "hands" he as seen at for the Grizzlies....this is going to be a great year for the Griz

Oregon is looking to replace more starters than any other team in the Pac-10. This is on top of replacing the legendary Mike Bellotti, who engineered more than a decade and a half of winning in Eugene. On the surface, that is a pretty daunting task, capable of causing great anxiety for Ducks fans as the 2009 season approaches.

However, two major components remain off of the 10-3 2008 Oregon team. Former offensive coordinator and now head coach Chip Kelly is one. The other is dual-threat quarterback Jeremiah Masoli.

Between Kelly and Masoli, the identity of Oregon’s highly entertaining, fast-paced spread offense is still intact. Last year, Oregon produced more touchdowns of 50 yards or greater than any other Pac-10 team.

Unlike offensive line and especially wide receiver, the quarterback position will not be an open competition at Oregon. If anyone was going to challenge Masoli for significant time this season, it would have been Justin Roper, who transferred out less than a month ago.
