It's Official: Roper coming to Montana

As for me, I can't wait to see Mr. Roper in maroon and silver on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

Or on a cold nasty snowy windy saturday afternoon.

I know I'm in the minority, but I love "football weather" games.

I'm with you on that.

I will go on record saying that Roper was not promised the starting position, but I am certain he was told it was his job to lose, which to me is not quite the same. Any good coach will play the best guy, and I am certain that the Griz will do just that.

Not trying to beat a dead horse, but Josh Swogger was given the starting position by BH before he transferred.

I think Swogger was the best choice for QB in 2006. Cole was a sophomore, Washington was injured, and Selle was a freshman. I think Cole probably learned a lot from Swogger that year.

I agree. After watching Cole his Freshman year I was happy when Swogger was coming in. I was always frustrated that on third and 8-ish he was throwing dump-off passes in the flat that got us two yards. It happened way too often during the Griz-Cat game we lost that year in Bozo.

If Selle/Larson/Kemp make huge strides this summer and blow up the Fall practices then I think Bobby will pick one of them. If there hasn't been enough progression, then it probably is Roper's job to lose.

Well, QB was a question mark in my mind this year. I do feel bad for Selle though. I think that Selle is a gifted athlete, but if Roper can beat him out, on with the show. However, this is not good precident for recruiting good freshmen QB's.

I hope too that Roper learns fast. Welcome to Griz nation!

It is probably OK to show Roper the locker rooms now that he has committed...

i don't expect roper to light up the world. swogger was a fifth-year senior when he came here. roper's stats aren't very good. they are very bad if you take out his game against so. florida. he cleaned up on a couple bad teams last year though, so like anyone else, he will do well in our predetermined games agasint half the big sky and western state or whover it is.

but i agree he's an upgrade over selle. second string qb here isn't a bad gig for selle though. I don't think he'll leave. where's he gonna go? the frontier? yuck.

Some kids would rather start at a smaller school than sit on the bench at a bigger one. That is EXACTLY why Roper is transferring to Montana. A friend of mine's daughter chose to remain on a JV basketball team until the time arrived that coaches insisted she start for the varsity. I appreciate and admire that kind of mentality. I truly hope none of them does so, but I definitely would understand why Selle or Larson or Kemp transferred, now that Roper is coming to UM.

roper is eyeing the nfl and that is a big reason he came here. selle isn't and transferring is a big hassle. you have to really want to play to do that and he's just one bad step away from starting here. the only school worth transferring to is carroll, but they already have 2-3 good qbs. wagner has that job sewn up. maybe rocky since he's from billings. that would make larson our backup and then kemp. larson seems more likely to transfer being a small town kid.

What's with all the pity for Selle and Larson? Starting at QB for the Griz isn't a right. Just because you're on the roster and the guy ahead of you graduates doesn't mean you're handed the job. He had every opportunity to impress the coaches in practice, scrimmage, and substitute playing time and didn't do it. If you spend 3 years on a team showing the coaches what you can do and they still don't feel comfortable putting the game on your shoulders then you should expect to be benched.

Also, having 5 years of college tuition and living expenses paid for isn't such a bad consolation prize.

I was just thinking this myself.. 5 years of free college and a degree to go out into the world is a pretty sweet gift, plus getting to play football here and there isn't bad either.

I think Selle is related to another former Griz QB who ended up at Rocky due to an incoming drop down .

I think it is a fair assumption we are all looking forward to Roper joining the team but let's not get too giddy! One guy does not make a team and he hasn't even shown up yet.
Great...we are now discussing whether our current QB's are going to transfer. Talk about fickle fans. All the talk earlier in the year about BH not cultivating local talent, how some of us don't like drop downs, blah blah. The moment we get a drop down guy from out of town the wolves come out to eat up our current guys. Roper is joining the team..he is not "making" the team. Just really bugs me when some of us turn on our guys. Like I said I'm looking forward to Roper coming but I am not about to wash my hands of the guys we have on the roster.

His older brother Kendall was recruited as a qb, played some S and ended up transferring to Carroll Coll.

Well said.

i guess i don't see it as turning on "our guys". Roper is coming and will be the starter. Now it's up to selle, larson, and kemp to decide how they want to play out their college careers. If selle wants to stay and be a backup, great. if he wants to transfer, great.

It didn't seem like anyone was turning on our current QBs. I think it's natural to expect one of the current QBs to look elsewhere with Roper coming in. I don't think people are hoping they do. It would be hard for Larson or Selle to stick around now if they don't get the chance to start, which they may still get that chance. I don't believe Larson will transfer, remember he was the jack of all trades last year. He seems to have that attitude where he doesn't care what position he plays, he just wants to get on the field, be it special teams or receiver or whatever. I think he showed that last year. He could wind up a lot like Clint Stapp in that regard. There are just some kids that won't get to see the field that much whether they like it or not, but ultimately their attitude towards the team will dictate whether they accept the role player role or that of the star.

And Stapp moved on, he would be a senior this year.

Selle will be fine. He is a good smart athlete. Best of all, he is a leader both on and off the field.

And, with Roper coming off a season ending injury last year, he knows he is only one play away from becoming the starter again.

I would also bet that Selle takes more snaps than Roper against Western St. Roper will start, but this game will get out of hand quickly. Selle will be in before halftime.
