Nice videos. Seems to have all the tools. As for running, he much better than Swogger and Miller. He is not as fast as Bergquist, but he seems very composed in the pocket and does just enough running. I like this pick up.

As far as his upside, I like his experience and that he is 6' 6". It will be nice to have a quarterback who can really see the field from up top.

Roper must be happy to be out of Oregon, though, as he won't have to wear butt-ass ugly uniforms anymore.

Selle can get a preview of what it'll be like with Roper coming in with the history lesson of another FBS QB, coming in to derail a Cole Berquist who probably thought the job was his to lose his sophomore year. But hey, it worked out for Cole who had a couple of pretty good seasons after Swogger left. :P

QB competition? Are you kidding me? Do you think that Roper would come to Montana to be thrown into the competiton for the starting QB job? He has that job locked up before he wears the uniform. You can bet that Hauck promised him the job in advance. This kid will lead us to chatty once again. No way Selle or Larson could do that.[/quote

Are YOU kidding Me? BH and his staff would never guarantee a player will start...a players joins the team and is given an opportunity to EARN his place on the team. Roper is now in the mix for the QB position with our other talented three guys and I am sure he understands that as well. Could you honestly imagine BH saying ,"Justin please come to Montana and we will guarantee you will start " No coach in any big program make guarantees or cut deals with a player about starting.
As for Roper coming...A big Griz welcome to him and his family! :D

Oh please, you buy into that B.S. about everyone competing for a starting job stuff? I guess Ochs, Swogger, and even Washington was not "promised" the starting QB job when they transferred, huh? They just went out and won it in practice? Whatever you wish to believe. I remember all of the B.S. about the QB competition being wide open between Disney and Ochs when Craig transferred to UM. That was all coach-speak. There was no way that Disney was going to start over Ochs, just like there is no way that Selle will start over Roper.

I agree with Hairy. Coaches definately make promises to players. They even make them at big time programs to recruits. Michigan promised Terrelle Pryor that he would play right away at Michigan. That is the only reason he considered going there. Now they don't always say "I guarantee you that you'll start week 1" but I'm sure Hauck informed Roper about our absolutley dreadful QB play in the spring game and told him that there is a very very good chance he'll start week 1. It would be pointless for Roper to even transfer if he didn't have at least have a "soft promise" that he will start week 1. I feel bad for Selle because he is a great kid but there is no way any of our QB's go 4-0 against the competition Roper went against. Hauck could have even outright guaranteed him the job, I don't know. But I will be SHOCKED if Roper doesn't start week 1. That said I hope I'm wrong and Selle is somehow better than Roper and leads us back to Chatty since he is a Montana kid and all.

I knew Ochs personally and he was never promised a thing. In some respects, Disney was given a lot of chances to be the starter. Had he not been injured in the first 1/2 against NDSU, he may have been the starter for most of the year. But Ochs was flat out a man among boys in 1AA/FCS. Once he learned the offense he was unstoppable.

Personally I am hoping Andrew will get it done and become the starter.

This is THE GRIZ! NC or BUST. We can't afford to have even 2nd team all-American type players leading the team.

I'm reminded most of Selle's potential from watching how JMU's backup performed when Landers was knocked out. JMU's backup came in with ZERO drop off. When Selle came in when Cole was hurt in the NC it was obvious that he was inferior to the starter.

Selle probably should have gone to Wyo when he had the chance. But, in Selle's favor, Roper seems to have injury issues.

Now the question becomes: is Roper going to be the first team all-American QB we need him to be?

Don't forget, folks, we don't have much of a line, but we do have a stud FB coming in. Roper may not throw the ball much at all. This year could be the Reynolds show...

Got that link fixed. I have scoured the Internet and cannot find any story of Aaron Pflugrad making a decision yet. He's still available.

Higgins is still the best QB in BSC, if not the FCS or all of college football. He has shown he can win the "big" game. He has shown in can play in front of a large crowd and not have bladder control problems. No
whining from him. He threw for like a million yards last season, no one can stop him. With Big Mac's coaching, he will have even more unstoppability this year, especially if he has that guy at WR who steals tvs (that guy is too fast)!

Hmm. I hate agreeing with you, but I'm afraid you've got a point. JMUs backup came in and was remarkable, and he got them back into the game. Selle did not turn heads when he came in for Cole in Chattanooga. The OL worries me, and Roper does not have the mobility of Cole. This is why I favor Larson for QB, but he will likely not be playing QB next season.

Sounds like the rich just got richer. Great addtion to an already stacked Griz team.

Cal Poly also added a former starter from a BCS team. Former UCLA WR Dominique Johnson has told numerous LA area papers that he is transfering to Cal Poly. Johnson is 6'3" 216 and will be a redshirt Junior in 2009. He had 35 receptions last year which was the 4th highest total for UCLA.

Here is a link to a thread on AGS that I started with more info on Johnson: http://www.anygivensaturday.com/forum/showthread.php?t=60612

Wow, after watching those videos of him, and crowds of that size, its pretty awesome he is coming here. I think our stadium had to help. Maybe its not official, but I think everyone knows he will be our starter this year. Maybe not week one, but definitely by conference play. I'm sure bobby didn't just come out and say it, but it had to be implied that he would get the job.

Nope I still stand by the fact that coaches don't make promises about starting to players. For one reason, it would make the guy coming in possibly sit back as it is his "right" to start; it would set up a "prima donna" mentality with the guy coming in and then who is in charge? Coaches want to amp up the competition for positions and promising someone it is a given to start doesn't do that. You also have to give some credit to players (and their families who are part of the decision making process for many) to have enough smarts to assess the situation on a team before committing. Asking whether their son has a good chance to crack the starting spot. And last, of course coaches are always looking to improve. Are they going to bring in an equal or mediocre player especially this late in the game? Highly unlikely. Meaning that bringing in an experienced player for a position is not a guarantee to start but it would look like the player stands a very good chance. Players earn their place on the team and with that respect from their teammates.

Selle has shown me nothing so far. And Larson is not a QB, he is a great athlete looking for position. Remember that Roper was the #30 high school QB coming out out his senior year. And, he was the starter at Oregon for awhile. He will be better than Swogger. I too have reservations about the O-line. We lost so much there. One ray of hope is that Germer will be coaching them, which will be a huge upgrade over what we had lasdt year.

First of all, if the coaches assessed the quarterback situation after spring ball and honestly believed Mr. Roper could step right in and compete for the starting job, there is absolutely nothing wrong with promising him that. And if they assessed the quarterback situation and honestly believed he was the front-runner, there is absolutely nothing wrong with telling him that, either.

On the other hand, the coaches also need to take care of their other quarterbacks. As we've seen so often, you never know when the back-up will need to step up and lead the team.

So I'm sure the coaches are smart enough to send the right signals to the affected players and are taking care not to bruise fragile egos.

As for me, I can't wait to see Mr. Roper in maroon and silver on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

Or on a cold nasty snowy windy saturday afternoon.

I know I'm in the minority, but I love "football weather" games.
