Not understanding the game of football?
The past 2 seasons, the number of posters discounting and Pooh poohing Griz wins has grown significantly.
If you don’t think Ferris was a good team, then I don’t believe there is any hope for you. Jeez, look at what Hauck said about them.
The Griz have a ways to go, but they are going in the right direction. We will see if they can get there for the tough conference games.
It sounds like the crowd was awesome.
No. And that premise is weak, at best.
The premise being, only people who don’t understand football are concerned about the quality of this team’s wins (or the overall health of the program).
I would argue that anyone who dismisses this win simply because Ferris State is a D2 school doesn’t understand football.
That being said, multiple things can be true at the same time.
I think the Griz’s win over Ferris State was a quality win preciesly because the Bulldogs had more overall talent and were better coached.
It’s concerning that a lower-division program with considerably fewer scholarship players and resources put a team on the field that was significantly more talented in the trenches than Montana’s team.
I think our QBs, RBs, and WRs were marginally better than theirs. I also think our secondary, particularly our safeties were better on defense. When it comes to the offenseive and defensive lines, Ferris State was clearly better. By a lot.
Anyone who disagrees needs to look at the stats.
The Bulldogs outgained the Griz, keeping them below 200 yards of total offense. Even with the botched officiating call that robbed Bergen of a catch and the offense of ~20 more yards, it’s still remarkably undewhelming.
What’s most concerning about this game, is that when you re-watch it, the Griz were fortunate to win. If the Ferris QBs were a bit more accurate and certain Bulldog players a tad more disciplined, the Bulldogs win that game.
What’s most concerning about the program, is that we’re six years into Hauck 2.0, and it’s clear that Montana is not able to recruit and develop offensive lineman. Or QBs for that matter. They also don’t have the athletes to run the 3-3-5 defense. And thier receivers can’t create seperation on offense, but I digress.
Yestderday’s game exposed the weakness of the offensive and defensive lines, which only makes me wonder, how can anyone who claims to understand football argue that Griz football is headed in the right direction?
Our offensive line cannot reliably pick up a yard when needed most. This has been an issue since Delaney’s tenure. The one constant is Germer. But he’s friends with Bobby, so he will never be held accountable.
Compare the product Germer (and now Phenice) has produced compared to our rivals in Bozeman during Hauck's tenure. Anyone who wants to argue this point can re-watch the last two Griz games in Bozeman. Keep in mind, this year’s State team doesn’t have a senior OL on thier two-deep and they looked pretty solid through three games, especially in Brookings.
So, yes, this was a quality win. And yes, people who understand football have a reason to be concerned about this team (I think this team goes 0-3 vs. Idaho, Sac St., and Bozeman — I hope I am wrong) and the complacency of the program under Hauck.
