It is for Eastern, you guys are the measuring stick every year and the one game Eastern circles every year…

On top of that, one could argue eastern has given Montana it's best competition over the past 20 years compared to any other team in the conference

The only "rival" I know that UM has is Idaho....EWU and MSU are nice little games but Idaho is the top dog to beat. Glad to see them back where they belong.

I know per the Big Sky scheduling we're "rivals" with MSU and EWU. I'm wondering if fans actually consider EWU a rival though.

Me personally... I don't. We have 1 rival and they're in this same state. If we had a 2nd real rival I'd say it's Idaho. Wondering how others feel about this...

I agree, so also voted no...oh, and bobcats suck. I'd more call them the competition. Look at any other conference, Stanford rival is Cal...but USC is competition (or San Diego State apparently).

Great post. In the analogy over the same time period, I'd equate Montana to USC, and EWU to Oregon, but you've conveyed the same idea.

can you elaborate on the call? I'm not familiar. would like to be filled in.

Well it lead to one of the more famous Zorne Quotes (still repeated) "Every time I come to Missoula I feel like a prostitute on a Saturday night. Eastern was down 5 and going in to score. On the last play of the game, Eastern's QBcompleted a pass to Tracy Poffenroth in the back of the endzone. Poffenroth caught the ball took three steps, and celebrated as he ran out the back of the endzone. When he caught the ball, he was only about 6 yards deep in the endzone. The back judge ruled he never had a foot in the endzone and was out of bounds. In 1986 Eastern was not yet in the Big Sky, so the Griz used local officials for the game. The Missoulian printed a large picture on the front page of the Sunday paper after the game that clearly showed Poffenroth inbounds scoring the 'winning' td (final score Montana 42-37). Tracy is still active with the program. SI used to have the film, but I couldn't find it.

They were just getting over it when in 2001, where Yohance Humphrey scored a go-ahead TD in the final seconds but had either actually fumbled the ball or had gone out of bounds prior to getting in the end-zone. (Film confirmed that one as well.)

They are still getting over it, go check out the Griz thread on their forum. That explains the comment about "Missoula officials."

Sounds like Trudy Hufflepuff and friends might want to get over what happened over 30 years ago.

I think this was true at one point, but I don't think it's necessarily the case anymore.

Agreed, and based on W/L records, there isn't another team in the BSC that is even close.

OK, yeah, EWU fans really want to beat those bastards from Mm-North-uh-Portland State . . . more than anyone. One can tell they aren't really concerned with the Griz.

"With its return, Idaho will replace Eastern Washington as one of the Grizzlies' two protected rivals, ensuring the schools will play each other every season on a rotating home-and-home basis."

So it looks like no EWU on the schedule next season and then EWU comes to Msla in 2019.

Top dog?! Idaho is crawling back to league.

Have to agree...top dog? I think you could count on one hand the number of winning seasons they've had in the past 20. EWU has spanked them the last two times we've played. 85 scholarships and all...

Kind of figured this would happen with Idaho returning to the BSC. We get replaced by Idaho on Montana's schedule, Montana gets replaced with Idaho on ours. Kinda sucks we won't play every year, but not the end of the world.

Well, solely based on Saturday night, it WAS the case. I couldn't help but wonder which team was nationally ranked and which team was unranked. Jeezus, based on the player's and fan's actions, you would've thought they just won the natty!

So for someone in their 20s, I think we would all consider EWU our second rival...we were too young for the Idaho rivalry. None of us have the hate for them that appears in posters on this board. From what I've heard I'm excited for it to be back.

Can someone help explain tho why someone my age should be so excited for it? Why was it so big? Why so much hate?

Montana's natural rivals are Idaho and MSU. There is history, trophies and they are comparable institutions. EWU not so much, a Johnny come lately.
