Indoor Practice Facility Grand Opening

Griz til I die

Last night was the official grand opening and ribbon cutting for the Grizzly Indoor Practice Facility (that's the official name on the outside of the building). I know there's been lots of discussion on here about it being a bubble, but I'll be honest, after seeing it myself last night, I think it looks really good. It is a huge facility, much bigger than I envisioned it being. It's also a lot higher than I thought. You could definitely kick in there and maybe even punt as well, and there shouldn't be any risk with kicking a Soccer ball or hitting a Softball either. Overall, it looks pretty damn good!

It is beautiful on the inside. It looks big from the outside but seems much bigger when you are inside.

I was told by an AD Staffer that the plan now is to keep it up permanently. Taking it down and putting it up would cost $100,000 each time.
Outside logos and "University of Montana" will be installed soon.
The Bubble schedule is already totally filled after November 1st with football, other UM sports, Campus Rec., and private users. I saw that Missoula Strikers has many time slots reserved.

There was a whiteboard in the lobby that had the full practice schedule for each hour of the month. A quick glance showed that Griz Football, Track and Field, and Club Lacrosse seem to be the immediate users of the facility. It's gonna get a ton of use. Perhaps if they get enough revenue in rentals over the next 5-10 years, they could replace the bubble with a permanent structure if they choose to do so.

Does the university charge their athletic teams to rent the facility? How is the upkeep paid for ? Rentals? Please explain.
Well this is an athletic facility so the teams won't be charged anything to use it since the AD raised the money for it. Outside entities will be charged to rent it though. I'm not sure about the rec center and club sports if they'll be charged or not, but athletics can use it for free whenever they want since it's their facility

It’s nice, but it’s hard to think a bubble wasn’t short sighted compared to a steel building.
Though I agree with you, it made the project much more feasible, especially since it all came from private donations. The fund raising goal when it was proposed 5 years ago was $6 million. By the time the project was completed, it was $10 milllion to build. The infrastructure was set up so that in the future they can put a permanent structure over top. The structures that the dakotas built or are building are upwards of $30-40 million.

Of course we can look at the overreaction down the road and we could have a miraculous donor (or divert funds in sketchy ways) give $26 million at the drop of a hat and come up with an 80 yard solid structure, but maybe things done the right way pay off in the end.

Would you rather have the Washington Grizzly Stadium or a continual addition of aluminum infrastructure? Would you rather have the Adams Center or Brick Breeden? Would you rather have the champions center or the BAC? Would you rather be improving locker rooms and have a recovery center or would you rather have end zone drinking trailers? And would you rather have all your athletic facilities within a block of each other or spread out all over hell and back?

(Deep Breath)… 1st off, UM's new facility is very nice. I like the way it fits into the campus and will be used by more than just the football team. It will be a huge benefit to the University. Now let's go through what you said...
1) My guess is that you are saying the MSU did something "Shady" to raise the funds for their IPF. I don't see any evidence of that
2) The 80 yards was because there is an indoor track around the field. I am cool with that. Don't really want to get into a yard measuring contest.
3) Washington Grizzly Stadium is great, but the issue is, it can't expand at all. Yes, you can add more seats, but the "Guts" of the stadium are what they are. The GFP has talked about this a bit in the past on their show.
4) I have never been in the Adams Center since they remodeled, so can't speak to it. But I will say it is designed more like a Basketball arena than The Brick is.
5) I think both the "Champion Center" and the BAC are amazing. I don't see one being better than the other.
6) Both the "Champion Center" and the BAC have amazing locker rooms and Recovery centers, so again I don't see one being better than the other.
7) Here is where I can agree with you again.. I am not a fan of the stadium being 4 blocks from Campus. I wish it was in the South Parking lot area of The Brick. MSU is very spread out right now, but I THINK some of that is to do with the fact that they didn't plan to double in size over 20 years. I also don't know if anyone REALLY thought we would have 20K people at games all the time.

Overall, I don't know what will happen to both schools in the next 10-15 years. But I love the fact that both have set themselves ahead of not only their conferences, but ahead of their level (In football). It is an exiting time to be a Griz or a Bobcat... Now you can roast away at me!!!

I don't think msu did anything shady when it came to raising the money, but this picture posted on Twitter by the cats Football page shows something interesting. Look at the fence around the construction. Looks to me as though there is a scannable QR Code to where you can donate to the project. Has msu not raised all the money for the project yet? Are they taking out a loan or using institutional dollars? I just think it's kind of odd that they appear to still be asking for donations.

Not sure what that is for, hadn't noticed it before. I will find pit and let you know what it links to. My guess is it links to general athletic funding.
