If you could change....

If I could change anything, I would make our qb's healthy. If I could change another thing, I would make Weyer healthy. I won't list the other 25 things.

I'm posting opinions on a message board. I know, f*** me, right?

It's more than a little disappointing that someone with so much hype comes in, gets everyone excited, and then wets the bed.

Here are my positive takeaways from this game:
1) Simis is a gamer. He runs well, has great touch, and is an excellent fit for this system. It may be that his personality and play style are just what the O needs.
2) Defensive adjustments were spot on. Those big runs in the first half were virtually nonexistent in the second. Excellent defensive play.
3) Ben Roberts continues to impress. Great catches.
4) Jones' block on the TD run. When a 1000 yard receiver throws that kind of block, you know he's something special.

I get agitated, and "whinny" as I think you put it, when the tools and components are in place for excellent games but either execution or scheme problems render the tools useless. That's on the coaches. Plain and simple. These kids have no quit in them, and that is amazing to watch and see. I just feel, for as good as they are, they are not being placed in a position to succeed.

But take that with a grain of salt. I think if most of us were the head coach (including me) we'd be 0-6. I can't say I'd do better, but I can only call it like I see it.

I think you should take a much closer look....

I have Two.

For the life of me I cannot figure out the love for Nguyen. Does he ever actually catch a punt? Does he make players miss as a running back. I would make him full-time WR and give someone else a try at returning, they could not do worse.

Second, the red zone O is ridicules. Fix that and Grizzly are 6-0

nguyen had 11 carries for a 4.3 yard average. calhoun had six for a 1.5 yard average, and favors had about the same average. calhoun went sideways quite a bit instead of straight-on. on punt returns, nguyen had one for 10 yards and henderson one for 5 yards. and yes, he makes people miss.

i wish the endless, inaccurate nguyen bashing would stop.

Argh, I respectfully disagree... Nguyen would be much better at WR. It fits his abilities, and would get him is space. I have a problem with him as a punt returner because he does not do the number one thing a punt returner is suppose to do. CATCH THE STUPID PUNT! And this has happened for 2 YEARS!

He repeatedly cost the Griz 10-15 yards in field poss. because he lets the ball hit the turf. Even the one he fielded late in the game was dangerously on a bounce. He also called for a fair catch and caught another one on a bounce!

Im not bashing... its just the facts... he is not good as a punt returner.

Nguyen didn't cost UM 10-15 yards yesterday on any punt that could have been fielded. Those are the facts yesterday. While I have no problem with Henderson's fielding a long punt back on the 5 yesterday (given that he was trying to make something happen), that one cost UM more yardage than any of Nguyen's and more than Nguyen combined.

On the last drive, he let the sucker bounce and it did cost 13 yards... check the film. He is a college punt returner... catch the damn ball!!! BTW Henderson made an error also!

This is the most predictable offense ever assembled at UM. Everyone says,"we beat NDSU how come we can't beat the teams we should beat?" Simple, the NDSU game had no video of what to expect from us. Since then, all teams can see what the offense does. They move all their guys up to the line and rush the QB. The WR's run deep and there is no time for the QB to get them the ball. Fix this with VERY SHORT route's. Where were the screen passes to Nguyen? He is in there the most because of pass blocking and catching yet he never gets a pass thrown to him. Stitt can't change this offense totally because this is what he knows.
As long as we remain predictable, we will continue to get personnel injured and yes, lose!
The defense is OUTSTANDING!
O-Line needs help by the QB releasing the ball quicker, they can't block!
Simis can run this offense, very capable young man, get him the reps.
Quick slant routes will relieve some pressure off the QB's.
Get the ball to Nguyen or Calhoun more!
Fans stop complaining about kicking field goals or not. One week this board goes nuts over too many field goals then they bitch because the team didn't kick them.
Roberts and HORNER need to be in the game more. Where is Reese Carlson? Big receivers across the middle will help the QB. This hasn't happened since the NDSU game.

Well said, I agree 100%.
Only one more thing, TE's, there is a place for them in this offense. Why, because I don't see the OL really getting any better.

Aha! I knew you were a complainer like me! What components (besides the rather glaring OL issues) need to be in place for this team? What do you think?

When the ball is snapped the O-line should fall to their hands and knees or lay on the ground. Since the defense would have to crawl over them the QB would have more time than he currently gets...

do not be stubborn, use the coin flip to our advantage, home crowed when they are in the stands (and pumped up) at the beginning of the game, not when half the people are still in the parking lot getting their buzz on....I know how offensive minded we are, but we went 3 and out again on the first drive....geeez ,,,this type of thing we have control over and is a lapse in coaching in my opinion...

we did hendu was back on punt returns a couple of times. he was also back when they attempted the field goal at the end of regulation.............but i do know what you mean. get him out (punt returns) altogether.

In a perfect football world, (1) give the GRIZ a great OL (2) Healthy QB's

In the real world with personnel at hand. All of which I feel is manageable to do for the remainder of this season.
(1) Better in game decision making based on how each game is playing out
(2) Better field utilization with our personnel by using the middle 1/3 of the field with more drags, ins, hooks.
(3) More focus on getting the ball in the hands of Jones, Henderson, and Roberts. I'd like to see this offense at worse get the ball to each 7 times per game, which is reasonable at the pace of this offense.
(4) Utilize the well rounded skill set of Simis. He is a good passer and runner. Give him the plays both Gus and CC were running. Then again, maybe I just like what Simis brings to the table more than others do. So I can realistically rationalize if this is not done.
(5) Improve red zone scoring efficiency. That alone and this team is 6-0. That is very correctable, providing the team can figure out the reasons for how bad the red zone offense is.
(6) Have some faith in your special teams players, especially Sullivan in games where the offense is struggling and FG's can be the difference (leave your ego at the door, Coach Stitt).
(7) At the very least instill some bad ass and tough ass attitudes in the offensive line. Demand they as a group pick up that attitude. I'd be elated to even see any 1 or a few GRIZ OL get in the face of a few defenders here and there at opportune times. Something simple as that, is a sign to the team that this OL is here to stand up for it! Weyer has that attitude. I feel Luke has it within him. Rest of the OL, I am not sure in that regard. Either way, it has to be instilled in the group, rather they like it or not.

Of that list, I feel #5 and #6 are the most reasonable to do, and hope the rest fall into place with time.

Um, by the way, we the fans actually have 100% control over this. :thumb:
I consistently can make it to tailgating, get some food, have few drinks, socialize, and still get back in time for the 2nd half kickoff. The coaches should not have to be expected to make decisions based on the tendencies of our fan base. I understand your rationale, and it makes sense. However, this can be done collectively by the fans without coaching intervention. :thumb:

Our all-conference talented center healthy
Our QB1 healthy
300# nose guard
Fans to stop believing that they know more about football than a professional coach
Fan base to get back in their seats after half

I saw something on ESPN about that last night. The 5 is the new 10. It's based on the way punters spin the ball now to get backward spin. In reality, let it go inside the 5 only. I don't necessarily agree with that, but that's what the big boys are doing in college FB. Also, they said otherwise no matter what, catch the stinkin ball.

I'd change healthy center and ena being eligible.

The O-line is small and not as talented as lines we have had in the past. But the opponents have players also. Blocking is not just about one on one. Good running teams design plays to give the O linemen blocking angles, double teams, traps. Watched the Davis/NAU game online. They ran over NAU. The center pulls. Saw double teams with one lineman getting to the linebacker. I don't are what you have for linemen they will struggle with this offense.

That was interesting. They said punters were starting to kick the ball at the front so that the spin would basically let the ball die where it hits. And they did say, no matter what, catch the ball.

1. Peter Nguyen is not the running back this offense needs. Take away a 20 yard run that took advantage of an edge blitz by Weber and his average for the day was the same as the other backs. Peter can't take on tacklers and fall forward, he's just not big enough. He'd be much better suited as a slot receiver, as said already.

2. Offensive line play. I won't pretend to know enough about Stitt's offense to say it's a scheme problem or whether it's an execution problem, but the fact is that our running game is terrible and we're down to a third QB. Get a fullback in there, bring in a tightend, do something to keep the QBs upright.

3. Get the ball to our All America caliber receivers. Henderson and Jones should both be catching 6-8 passes per game, at least 10 yards down field. Chase Naccarato on a 3 yard screen is not the answer. Getting Roberts and Carlson involved in the middle of the field would be a big help as well.

take away nguyen's 21 yarder, and he still averaged more than a yard more per carry than the other backs (2.8). take away calhoun's longest run, and he averaged 1.0 yards per carry. take away favors' longest run and he went for 0.5 yards per carry. gawd, the stupidity.
