The Sun Belt Conference should be an FCS conference.

Why? Their teams are a blast to watch, they're becoming more competitive, and putting fans in the seats. They're better than probably every FCS conference right now.

In my mind, most of those programs are better suited for the FCS. The only program that has a higher average attendance than Montana is Arkansas St, who only averages about 26,000 per game. Most the rest are in the mid teens. The conference lost a large majority of their non-conference games, only beating two teams that made a bowl game and only beating 3 teams from BCS conferences. Most of their non-conference wins came against FCS teams that didn't make the playoffs.

They might be fun to watch, but they aren't that competitive. Adding two of the historically worst FBS programs and two programs moving up, makes it an even less competitve conference.

What does attendance average have to do with being an FBS team? There are FCS teams that draw higher than FBS teams.. there are also D2 and D3 teams that draw more fans than FCS teams. Attendance is irrelevant. The Sun Belt isn't the SEC, many of their FBS OOC opponents are mostly to pay the bills.. that's why you don't see Louisiana Lafayette blowing the doors off of LSU or Ole Miss.

Titelist, you're the one that said that they "are putting fans in the seats". Most of them are struggling to meet the 15,000 attendance minimum. Attendance is important. It reflects the strength of your fan base and your ability to generate revenue as a program. If you struggle in those areas and you can't compete with FBS teams outside your conference, it's difficult to argue that you are an FBS quality program.

Now, those teams are generating more money by splitting bowl and TV revenue, but the average football fan couldn't name you 3 teams from that conference off the top of their head.

Below are some numbers regarding App St's move up. Costs will increase by $4 - $6 million. Revenue will increase by $1.5 million. The shortfall of $2.5 - $4.5 million will presumably need to come from increases in donations. I don't believe App St sports receive any state funds. A feasibility study that App St did several years ago, said that they would need to increase their budget by over $5 million, which is what UM's feasibility study said for UM.

“ASU’s athletics budget is now about $16 million annually, and projections are that it will increase by $4 to $6 million with the move. The move is estimated to yield about a $1.5 million increase in revenue a year.”

$5 million per year is about what the MWC pays out to its members. just FYI and that does not include the payout form the new playoff system which is projected to be about $1 to $1.5 million per FBS team not in the top 5 conferences. The money in the MWC is there. I get that UM is not on the radar right now but if a MWC invite came you could not use money as an excuse.

North Carolina's definition of athletics funding, is much, much narrower than Montana's. The state-funded improvements for athletics facilities are substantial, but are not considered athletics funding. In addition, schools in the UNC system, of which App State is a part, get pretty creative about pairing projects. App State has a $45 million residency hall and football facilities expansion in the works that basically attaches new endzone seating to the backside of a very large dormitory. There's another $16 million in state funding for non-football related athletics facilities upgrades for the App State Campus.
The budget picture for UM athletics would be very different if appropriations were similarly structured in Montana.

Where's the other $1.5 million not mentioned in the article coming from? How do you know that?

How is the shortfall going to be covered, whether new revenue is $1.5 million or $3 million (which I doubt, by the way)?

Where's your source on $5 million per team payouts for the MW? I see that they get $1 million per team from tv. I'm doubting the $5 million figure, at least for now. This article or whatever it is says that the following about the MW payout last year: "The total payout for the Mountain West last year was $2.6 million (See Jack Graham's presentation for the proposed stadium at CSU for this figure)...."
