Hurry-Up Offense Will Gas Our O-Line

Griz fans should be more concerned about their D line holding up to NDSU's big nasty O line. Starters from left to right weigh in at 310, 326, 301, 300 and 300

Just wait and see. Let's revisit this thread after game six shall we?

In fact, why don't you have your head knob slobber (PR) ask Stitt himself about the effects of his offense on the defense.

Like Griz 90, I have previously talked and listened to Stitt, and other coaches, about the offense as well impact on the defense. Stitt wants a smart qb who can make good calls and reads, good decisions and deliver the ball to the right person. He has said the qb only needs to be able to throw 20 yards accurately. The goal is ball control and moving the chains, and eventually to score. The offense is designed to rspead the defense and looks for opportunities to take advantage of the defense. The qb is key to the offense. Will the offensive players be able to do this early in the season, or at all, I don't know. Seems like a tall task against top competition.

I would be more interested in knowing what stitt plans on doing when the opponent takes away the passing game...

How is an opponent going to take away the passing game, just out of curiosity? Is an opponent going to try to cover Henderson/Jones/Roberts, etc. tightly in man, with no safety coverage over the top? How does an opponent cover 4 receivers and a back tightly, and still have over over the top protection? Will opponents play mainly nickel and dime? If so, won't that open up the run game? The good news for UM is that while the offense is designed for mainly shorter passes, UM has a number of deep threat receivers, and Gus has a strong arm.

Do you guys remember when we had an offensive line that size? Those were that days...

So when your defense is gassed in the 3rd quarter vs NDSU, are you going to blame Ty for having a shitty defense or will you blame Stitt for not being effective or efficient on offense?

You guys have no idea what you're getting yourselves into.

Stitt knows, but I've yet to hear him talk about it

UM's defense was gassed against NDSU last year, in large part because NSDU's offense was good and powerful and UM's offense was inconsistent in moving the ball. I assume UM's defense, especially d-line, will be getting tired again this year. That won't necessarily have much to do with Stitt's new style offense, but if the UM offense isn't moving the ball and extending drives, that will contribute to and increase the problem for the defense (just like it did last year).

Not only will it gas your O line, your defense will be on the field ALL day long and give up tons of yards and points because they too are gassed. Someone once said that about the hurry up style of play! Get ready for a very disappointing defensive year!

No, all I can remember from that time period was everybody bitching about how ineffective and vanilla Phenecie's offense was.

And if Stitt's offense ends up scoring 45+ a game this season, people like you will still bitch about a lack of DOLA or some other nonsense... :ugeek:

What I've learned here is that there is no way to avoid gassing our OL and DL. Both will be gassed like it's chili night at the nursing home.

I have come to the conclusion that the knuckleheads on this site who have come to the conclusion our o-line will be gassed after running 90-100 plays per game must think Stitt doesn't know what he's doing. He will have his team ready to play his offense at opening kickoff they way he wants it played. You don't lose your football savvy, imagination, adaptability and smarts just because you had to drive through Butte to get from Colorado to Missoula. If I see three runs and a punt our first 3 series, I'll know I was wrong.

Been lots of talk about who runs a "hurry up" offense, versus who's good on time of possession. Just to insert some real numbers into the (ahem) discussion, here are Big Sky numbers from last year. (Taken from the NCAA statistics site.) The teams are ranked by their plays per game, BTW

Offensive Plays and TOP -- Big Sky Teams
Team, Plays per Game, Time of Possession (min./game)
ISU ..... 82.7 28.3
CP ...... 78.8 31.8
EWU ... 77.1 31.4
MSU ... 73.9 31.8
SacSt .. 73.8 31.1
PSU .... 73.4 28.7
SUU .... 72.8 27.1
NAU ... 72.1 32.1
WSU ... 70.5 28.8
NoCol. 64.5 29.7
UM ..... 63.8 28.1
UND ... 61.1 29.7
UC-D.. 60.0 28.0

Some take-aways.
One: Last year, nobody ran the kind of tempo Stitt is planning for the Griz (90+ per game). ISP, CP and EWU were up there pretty good, but nobody came close to 90. (And, if I recall correctly, 90 was the minimum number of plays Stitt wants to run.)

Two: The correlation between the number of plays the offense ran and what their TOP ended up to be is only weakly correlated. ISU, the team that ran the most plays per game, had one of the lowest TOP. Granted, EWU and CP had both high plays per game and TOP. But NAU, which was well back in the pack in plays run, had the highest TOP.

Three: The Griz, with the third-lowest plays per game, and a crappy TOP, still went 6-2 in conference, tied with MSU and ISU.

Just thought you'd like to know. :)
