And all but two bsc programs would KILLLLLL for that attendance.
Not in FBS, they wouldn't kill for that attendance.
If UM won 16 games in 7 years, UM's attendance would be less than UMass'.
Do you believe that would happen?
See, this is what I don’t understand: “the we’re just Montana and we’ll fail at the FBS level” thinking. Seriously, if I had to live my personal or professional life with that attitude I’d slit my wrists.
Grow some balls, people. We’re MONTANA. Give us 22 more scholarships and you believe we couldn’t compete with Wyoming, Air Force, Colorado State, etc? And even if we do lose a little more often, it’s to Colorado State not freakin noco!!
Yes, UM attendance would fall apart if the team won 16 games in 7 years. Even diehard fans would stop attending consistently and stop going out of their way to watch the games on tv/streaming. When your team gets pounded every week, the games aren't fun. Tailgating would be less fun, as there would be so many fewer people. Students wouldn't go to games in large numbers. Bandwagon fans would be gone in a couple years.
Season tickets would have a huge drop. People wouldn't need to lock up seats with season tickets, as they would be easily available for any game.
Lower attendance and lower season tickets would kill the the athletic budget. UM isn't in a position now to further subsidize a declining athletic budget. Bodnar and the Regents would need take that risk.
Would UM "fail" at FBS? Don't know, but UM certainly wouldn't be starting seasons at 5-1 and going to the playoffs every year. Look what happened to attendance in the Stitt years. Miss the playoffs once, in 2016, and have a less than specular season in 2017, and attendance drops almost 2,000 per game. 2,000 per game times 6 games equals 12,000, times $40 per game, plus lost revenue from parking, concessions and Griz gear, that's probably a loss of $550,000 - $600,000 in the year.
I just don't think a lot of fans would attend games consistently if the team wasn't winning most games and going to the playoffs.
We Are Montana is a phrase. It's a cliche. If you want to build your success and financing at the FBS level around a phrase, go for it. Sorry, but it takes a lot more than that for success.
Plus, there's really no realistic FBS conference at this point.
Sorry to say, but it takes more than growing ball and chasing windmills. UM hasn't even been able to get to the playoffs and beat the Cats the past 2 years. How in the heck would UM magically start competing well against MW teams week after week?
If you took undue risks like this in your professional life, you would fail or be fired.
