It still boils down to the fact that there is no where else to go.

Depends on our attitude and what we are willing to do, or not do. I actually believe, the MWC is not as far out of reach as some believe. It is just a matter of a few more dominoes to fall into place. Both football and basketball, have to be in a great place to take advantage of it.

I don't think those dominoes are as close as you do. And even if the MWC adds a school, it will be more focused on football than basketball.

Exactly, do you honestly think the teams in the mountain west would be excited. There are other teams I think would be on their radar if they were to expand, utep, granted they suck right now in football not to bad in men's basketball , ut-san antonio .they both I think would.bring more to the table.

I'm pretty sure the point was "If the bball program could earn more, the athletic department would have more money and leverage", and it's honestly the only thing that even resembles a "plan" I've seen. I know it doesn't happen overnight, but UM Bball has a lot going for it with facilities and being the only show for miles around. The Champions Center can't hurt. We hear all the time that we are hamstrung due to finances, and investing more in an already solid program in a sport that has the poetential to bring in duckets isn't exactly a bad idea just because "we have a football program".

But football money is still king, so putting more money into basketball would mean less into football. If the Griz want to move onto a better conference with the options that could be available, they would have to increase football money, and to accomplish what is being suggested, increase basketball money also. Not sure where all that money comes from.

Further to EG's post above (with which I agree), I'm not proposing that we take the FB budget and give it to Bball. I simply believe the Bball program could use a bit more attention, playing the long game, to hopefully maximize its potential for NCAA Tournament revenue. Make it out of the first weekend in the Dance a few times, and there's your money. Outline a plan, get big FB donors on board with Bball, and explain why it would benefit FB in the long run (as if it needs to be explained). Come up with something other than the tired, "we don't have the money." Find the f***[*] money; that's why you're paid money.

This. So much this.
+1
Best two words in a great post, Long game. Need a goal and some strategies to get there.

Disagree, because football money is what drives decisions...not basketball.

You miss the point. We are saying, while we are where we are at, it might be wise now to invest more into basketball, at our current standing. There really is not a lot more we can put into football at this stage and level. Our football program is already on a pretty attrative level to sell perspective future conference partners. Our basketball program has much more room to grow, to get to that kind of attraction level. A strong basketball program helps our case to move. Also, if GRIZ basketball can become a consistent NCAA Tournament team/program it can give GRIZ athletics more power to within the Big Sky to make the necessary changes within the conference.

Typically, the 1 bid to the NCAA tournament is worth $1,000,000 to the conference, divided among the conference members. That is what the conference is used to. The expectation has to be set higher than that in basketball. If any 1 program can break into being a consistent final 32, or Sweet 16 team, a larger portion of that revenue should go directly to whichever program is truly making the money. At worse, that is an extra $1,000,000 going directly to that program/school. That would serve for some great motivation to up the level within the conference for basketball. For example: the U of M could use that additional money for coaching bonuses, additional recruiting funds etc. Hey Travis, here is the deal, as a reward for success, $250,000, $500,000 etc of this if for you and your program. How do you want this money used?

Because of the NCAA tournament revenue, Baskeball has the potential to be a terrific money maker. Additionally, money aside, it makes for a much better resume to put the athletic department, university, etc to put out to potential buyers, takers, potential conference affiliates, etc.

Using that to get to the MWC would be beneficial. There is no reason why Montana could not compete in football and basketball in that conference. At this stage, the basketball side of things have much more to prove than the football side does. Right now, football has some breathing room and time is for once a luxury. At some point, it would be nice to have basketball on nearly the same level as football has been at, and will get back to.

Part of the problem is that the NCAA tournament money is split up between all of the conference so you get the same amount if you are in last place that you do if you win the facilities improvements along with an additional $2 million per year after that?

We can't even fill the basketball arena now with the quality programs that we have. If we are clamoring to move up so bad, why aren't there more butts in the seats? More basketball money is easy, show up for the games and support what you have.

Surprise, surprise. Another b*tchfest On egriz about the Big Sky.

But you bitched about my conference lineup too.

Great Northern -West
Idaho
Montana
MT State
Weber St
Denver
AirForce (no fb as that would go American)

East
UND
NDSU
SDSU
USD
Omaha
W Illinois

Isn’t it surprising that the Griz and the kitties both played W I’ll, as they trying to get used to them?

That conference would have higher academics and financials and aspiration than the Big Sky has never seen since Nevada and Boise St left. The only garbage school is W Illinois, as the state of Illinois has basically stopped funding higher education to prop up the state employee and teachers unions to keep them stable for their outrageous pensions.

Correct. The difference, of course, is that in real conferences, you have a legit shot to get multiple teams into the Dance. And again, the television money is the difference maker.

And if we move up to the MWC or something similar, what does that gain us over what we have now except for a chance to play in the Famous Potato Bowl or some similar quality venue? Big fat hairy deal! No thanks!

It would seem that UNDfan has a giant crush, and it is not secret.

We won’t be moving anywhere until UM solves the declining revenue problem. We now have a quality president that can solve the shortfall in enrollment. For the time being, we will be fortunate to remain in the Big Sky and FCS.

Hmmmm...lemme think:

Programs in our conference who are peer universities.

Not having to play in a cow pasture.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Televised games on an actual channel not filmed by the junior high photography club.

The ability to determine an actual conference champion and not count/not count games against a conference/not-conference member.

Not to mention a legitimate conference for our basketball teams and olympic sports. There's more to an athletic program than football.

What website do you think you're posting on, Crusher?

The Griz, bob kitties, Vandals and Weber St are the only fan bases in the Big Sky that are worth a bucket of spit. You might as well play JC’s and get bigger road crowds.

Yeah, yeah, but then we'd have to play in the . . . wait for it . . . Toilet Bowl! Get it? It's becuase the bowls are crappy even though Eleven Sports just bid on the FCS Championship. Toilet Bowl! Ahh, you guys don't get it. Anyway, try the shrimp.
