How do we shut down Chambers/Mellott?

The part that raises it's head and determines the outcome will be our offense vs your defense.

You do your best to crash the edges, put your corners on an island (as you've done successfully all year, they're very good) and make our guys beat you throwing. Easy to say, hard to do, this will be the best o-line you've faced and it's not close. OTOH, this is the best defense we've seen since week 2. I'm pumped. Put the ball down and let's find out, strength on strength. 2 great outfits.
Agreed. Good take. As is often the case in a given game, the matchup people are NOT talking about is the most important.

For the most part, I've always been positive about our Griz team and what they were capable of. Call me optimistic or whatever, but I truly believe that our Griz defense will slow down the Cats offense significantly. I know we're not going completely shut them out, but I would be surprised if the Cats get more than 21 points.
Our defense has been the heart of this team. Coming to play each and every week and keeping the team in it, while the offense had to find itself. I've never seen a defense swarm and tackle like ours does in a while. Our defense doesn't give up a lot of YAC or additional yards after contact. And they all play together. It's never just one guy making all the plays. Is like they always preach in interviews, each player doing their 1/11.
Playing unselfish football and amazing team ball is what wins games and championships in my opinion.
The Cats have great individual talent, but tend to falter when times get tough or when facing a hostile crowd. Our defense, accompanied with our fans is the perfect recipie to keep this offense on check. Not to mention the amount of knowledge, our defensive coaching staff has as a collective is probably the best, if not the best in the FCS. I have no doubt Ronnie Bradford and his assistants will come up with a great game plan and put our Griz in a great position. The best thing is our defense and team continues to get better each week. We are peaking at the right moment and I'm not worried that our defense will stop the Cats offense.
While our offense has also found it's identity behind Clifton McDowell and company, the defense is the heart of this team. And as we all know Defense wins championships. The Cats might be used to running over teams like Eastern Washington, but are in for a ride awakening when they face our D and our fans. Go GRIZ!!!

Yeah PSU was averaging a lot of rushing yards too.. they didn't fare very well. This year's griz rush D is a lot better than last year.

By what metric is this years rush defense better than last years? Since the rushing defense stats are all so similar are you basing this just off your gut feeling? Eye test? Statistically the Griz defense is excellent against the run, and has been for several years, but that has not stopped MSU from running all over this defense in 3 of the last 4 meetings.

I really hope if you watch every game you can tell when the defense has been better.

…. Pretty sure UM was the top BSC rushing defense last year too… they usually do well until they play the cats.
I'm not saying by any means that we are going to shut the cats run game down but, the griz d is more sound this year vs the rush. Last year there wasn't that many teams with an actual good run game. MSU and NDSU were really the only decent run teams they faced last year and we seen how that went.

Usually? MSDUI managed a total of 96 yards rushing last visit to Missoula. That's a good precedent.

Given our 3-3-5 defense, it seems shutting down the Cat's dynamic duo is going to be very difficult. We do not want to get into a shoot-out with them. I don't believe that is a game we can win.

Do we assign Riley Wilson as a spy on either QB? He is fast and strong. Just not sure that is enough.

Thoughts?

My view is how are Cats going to score on Griz D?

The scat game is TEN MONTHS FROM NOW!
There has to be posters paid to come up with this sh*t.

It’s an old thread from this past season that someone bumped because there were lots of cats fans who were still hanging onto their pre season champs status as well as their backups being better than starters and talking lots of smack. Fun to revisit is all.

I don't think we'll any trouble with Chambers. Ha.

"I expect the Griz to be favored over the Cats ahead of that game."

"The Cats have a much tougher schedule this year. The Cats were lucky to win several easier games even last year. The conference has now had a full season of observing the Cat offense. Some teams have already shut or slowed down the offense. Obviously, not the Griz last year. There is now more learning and tape on the somewhat unique Cat offense. The Cats are fortunate to have 2 very good qb's for the offense. Each has gotten hurt, but not both except in the last game. If both get hurt at the same time, the Cat O will suffer. The Cat D is only okay. The Cats will have more losses coming into the Griz game. The Griz should have fewer losses, with a more favorable road schedule and a bigger QB room. I'm hoping the Griz will have 3 qb's who can run the offense, and a more dominant o-line that can open bigger holes for the strong group of rb's. Hopefully, Pease's offensive scheme will add some spark."

Two June 13 posts. This guy was right on the money. Ha.

From a brief review of the posts back then, it appears we have many posters who should have considered a career in weather forecasting. And I am not going to pretend I was all-sure going into the Rivalry game. But the lesson is: don't put too much stock in prognostications, here or elsewhere.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but this one was INCREDIBLY fun to look back through.

And I noticed there weren't any posts to this thread AFTER the Griz beat State by not a little, until you resurrected the thread. Trying to think of the reason. :coffee:

OK. I didn't check the date of the post. My error. If the mods would just eliminate scat trolls...Livininthebush, like a case of the crabs, is a good starting point.

The best part about reading this again: how many of those bub trolls haven't been seen or heard from since.

Kudos on your prognostications! But the Griz were not favored over the cats ahead of that game. To be fair, you did only expect them to be. You didn't claim they would be definitively. Regardless, bravo!

"FCS: What’s At Stake For No. 3 Montana vs. No. 4 Montana State?
Sam Herder by Sam Herder November 14, 202"

You are talking info from a betting site. I was talking more about who knowledgeable football people thought would win. The people I know, including some coaches not at UM or MSU, fully believed the Griz would win, coming into the game. The pollsters thought UM was a better team. Betting odds come from how much money is bet on each side. I don't find bettors to be knowledgeable about lessor games, because they don't seem to have the expertise and knowledge that bettors on big time games have.

Besides "expecting" the Griz, what could I have said. I wasn't going to guarantee something, epseciallly something.

I know you like to ;pick at me, but you came wiith fail here.

Why don't you give us some of your football knowledge and predictions? I know that will be short blurb.
