how did this game get scheduled

I think I may go crazy next year, waiting until mid-September for there to be a home game.
I may go crazy waiting for the Wyoming and NDSU games; hope to do both.

So, the $64,000 question is this: Do us out of state fans make the LARAMIE road trip or the FARGO road trip next year?
I'm planning on both, but if only one it will be Wyoming. We're 0-13 and need some revenge from them. It's also closer.

I'M GOIN TO FARGO..NOT EVEN A QUESTION

I'd love to make both games.
Yet like Kem, if it's only one it will be Wyoming.
Less apt to run into a September blizzard in Laramie than in Fargo. ;)

I was thinking South Dakota as well, and a DII. Not sure which will be the home opener, just know the home opener next year isn't until at least Sept. 13. I guess no complaining about the sched though since the Griz are certainly being put to the non-conference TEST the first two weeks. I suspect those two road trips should being what they are should mean NO complaining about the rest of the sched next season. sarcasim.
Damn. I've known about both of these games for quite awhile but never put 2 & 2 together. This is gonna be one hell of a way to kick off the 2014 season.

I hate this game too, but I actually think there will be a regular large crowd at kickoff. It's still a September game and much of the September crowd doesn't really care who the Griz play as much as they just love to be at the game.

Still, to me a home game is better than the alternative. Next year, the Griz open at Wyoming Aug. 30 then go to NDSU Sept. 6. It's a 12-game sched next year again, so expect the home-opener to be another DII at best. I don't see the Griz paying two FCS teams to come to Missoula next September.
wow! im really excited for next year now!

South Dakota for the home opener:

VERMILLION, S.D.—University of South Dakota football will open its 2014 season against University of Oregon on Aug. 30 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore. The Ducks are a part of the Coyotes’ non-conference schedule which includes a trip to Montana (Sept. 13) and a home game against Northern Arizona (Sept. 20).

Will definitely go to Wyoming next year - Labor day weekend gives an extra day to come home through Yellowstone.

We are driving down from Kalispell to this scrimmage. I hope to see the whole team play. That means everybody. JJ should get his 350 yards by halftime. All starters should get plenty of rest. No injuries. Could be fun for three quarters. Then, a fast trip back to home.

Scheduling has been a lot tougher that last few years because of the expansion of the Big Sky. Before that, we could often count on a home game with Cal Poly (11/16 meetings in Missoula), Southern Utah (5/5 meetings in Missoula), or one of the Dakota teams. The Great West Conference did a lot of favors for us scheduling-wise, but now they are all current Big Sky or MVFC schools, so they expect home games out of any deal now. I wonder if there are any poorly-funded Big Sky teams - I'm looking at you, Idaho State - that would bus here for a one-off non-conference game in order to collect a check. I don't see it happening though.

The CAA and SoCon can easily schedule FCS teams with few or no scholarships as their cupcake games, but in the west we normally have to settle for D-2 teams. At least the playoff committee has decided not to hold that against us anymore.

It would be nice if the FCS went to a 12-game schedule every year, which would give UM the option of having only home-and-home games outside of the conference. I read another topic here a while back that ESPN was interested in televising a few FCS games the weekend before Labor Day, which would be the first of 12 games in the season for all involved.

The Griz are actually playing non-conference games against Big Sky schools coming up in 2015 and 2016. PSU and Cal Poly I believe. Not sure in which order, but I remember a while back seeing something to the effect that the Griz wouldn't be in Portland until 2015.

So it's a non-conference road game against Portland State? If so, I don't see why we would do this unless there are absolutely no other options for home-and-home non-conference games.

I will not bitch about this game today for one reason. The health of the team. The Griz have plenty on their plates coming up. Rest the starters and let our second stringers get some reps. NAU will be a good game and hopefully a big win on the revenge tour. Kick the hell out of Oklahoma Poop State and move on. Go Griz
