I’be heard many argue this team was LESS physical than last year’s. They — rightfully — say we couldn’t get a yard on 3rd or 4th and one all year. And that’s ALL about toughness. That’s ALL about desire, about moving the guy across from you off the LOS juuuust enough to allow the ball carrier to get a yard, even if that guy is better than you.
That all said, I’m not sure why getting more physical is necessarily a step in the right direction. I guess it is if you want to play smash mouth, but that style of football is a dying breed.
If you are listening to people who think this year's team was less physical, then that may explain some of posts you make, and the crazy thinks you say sometimes. This year's team was much more physical than last year's team. As for the o-line, this year's o-line was not as good as last year's o-line, due to lack of experience, youth and perhaps more. Last year's o-line had 4 senior starters. This year's didn't eventually even have the services of the one returning starter, who was hurt. This year's o-line was starting 2 redshirt frosh, 2 walk-ons, and a player who didn't switch to o-lineman until after pre-season started. He was strong for his size, but very undersized. Obviously, very inexperienced.
No, opening holes is not all about toughness and desire. Those things help, but it is also about other things, including skill, experience, size, strength, mobility and scheme.
