Herder: Pre-season Top 25

You had all off season to plan for Sean and Tommy last year, it wasn’t a secret who we were starting after the playoff run. Ifanse played in 2 games last year and 1 of them we lost. Tell me where you’d put the Gris. Where have the gris made noticeable gains this off season? Like I said I don’t bet money on sports. But if you want to bet your account I will gladly accept. Y’all finished 6th in the conference and think you deserve to be top 10 to start the year? That’s just too funny.

Tell me you don’t know what you’re talking about without telling me you don’t know what you’re talking about 🤣

No, your qb's had never played together until last fall. It's much easy to play against an O and players, after you've played them once. Also, easier to prepare after you've got tape of other teams shutting them down.

Griz o-line all return, has added some players, and is deep. They were good most of the time last year, and will be great next fall. Best since 2009, says Hauck. Running backs will be even better and deeper. Backers will be very good and deeper. Receivers will be better. Hopefully, our qb will be healthier, instead of being out and hurt out of the season since SS. Safeties appear to be good and fairly deep.

Griz have a new OC that many people are excited about. Griz have younger position coaches. Lots of good reports coming back on the new positioning of the assistants.

My criticism of Herder had nothing to do with his ranking of the Griz. I don't care where they are ranked. He's put multiple teams in ridiculously positions. He never played football and doesn't understand it.

Let's see your position group analysis of why you think the Cats deserve to be no. 3. I assume you won't or can't do that, because you also don't understand the game.

Well, deep is nice but you can only start 5. Hauck also said last year was his favorite and most talented team. I’m glad you’re excited about your new OC- that doesn’t make him a world beater. Why doesn’t Herder know Football exactly? Because the Gris aren’t top 5 to start the season?

If you must ask. Our entire O-line returns which was the best rushing attack in the nation. We made it to the semis last year and we return most of our impact players, our coaching staff is intact and I believe our OC will call another stellar game against the 3-3-5. He has a proven track record of playing teams a second or third time and having a better game plan. Secondary is thin, but it wasn’t spectacular last season. I don’t see how you can justify putting any team ahead of the Cats outside of SDSU and NDSU to start the season. Then we just have to sit back and watch. But let’s see these polls come out and you can knock every single one of them that has the cats highly ranked because ya know.. facts over feelings and all.

A lot of what you’re saying is an assumption. You’re assuming the RB’s will be better. You’re assuming the WR play will be better. I mean even I’m assuming the OL play will be better. The only difference is: even if it’s not. We’re gunna play at a conference championship level because that’s proven while the Gris will be trying hard for the top half of the BSC.

Lemme guess, you’re really into this new QB of yours. He’s the one isn’t he? QB1 last year seemed to be really hurt vs winning teams, but was a gamer vs NW state. I don’t think he was the solution last season.

Didn't you guys lose your offensive line coach, who was also your run game coordinator? 🤔

Had a new DC the last 3 seasons and still managed a national championship run and conference championship. Y’all got a new OC. That’s a big deal. Let’s see how it goes!

Well Cat fans have every right to brag and pound their chests given their performance the past two years. Still, this season could be much different for a lot of reasons. One thing we all can probably agree on is the stupid damn BSC schedule being unbalanced. I despise weak schedules for one school and running the gauntlet for another. It just doesn’t help the conference. Cats will get a taste of a tougher schedule this year and that may mean injuries. Griz have a much easier path to the playoffs. Does it guarantee anything? No! I also think the brawl is a wild card anymore. Griz and Cants should both be top three in the conference and anything can happen in the Brawl. Being at home is a big advantage. I like the odds this year.

I’m not pounding my chest, I just don’t think the Gris belong in the top 10 and I don’t see why we shouldn’t be top 3 to start the year. I don’t see why that’s such a reach. You’re not wrong about the unbalanced schedule. But I am confused- do gris fans think last year was a gauntlet of a schedule? Y’all started 5-0 and didn’t play a winning team until you lost at home to Idaho.
I don't have a problem with anyone putting the cats that high or us that low, but are you serious here?

Every team we played with a winning record went to the playoffs, 3 of them were top 10 and 2 of them were top 5, with those last 3 all being on the road.

Every BSC team you guys played last year with a winning record was at home, and you shared a title with Sac because you didn't play them.

At the very least it was a gauntlet relative to yours lol

He doesn't have a clue about football or his team. Who needs an o-line coach and run game coordinator for a running team?

Davidson had the best rushing offense yardage per game.

Cats had the lowest passing yardage of any team in the conference.

Petty soon he'll be telling us that the Cats will clobber SDS in the second game of the season.

I think Jackson St. had 8 transfer to CU. It looks like another Sanders just graduated and transferred in the past few days. I assume others went to the Portal and went to teams other than CU. In glancing at their game notes from last year, it listed 9 graduates and seniors. A new coaching staff.

They don't have a qb yet. Still competition. Their good rb wasn't with the team this spring and seems to have disappeared. Needs to figure some things out.

After the spring game, the coach said they need to find new o-lineman. Holes there. The transfer qb was sacked 3 times and threw a pick. The coach said they have other holes to fill.

The new coach: "“The former JSU quarterback and wide receiver has been a part of the Jackson State football staff since 2019, coaching tight ends and wide receivers, the university said in a news release, according to WAPT, “and has played a key role in an historic run over the past two seasons of Tiger football.”

Nice job, Herder. What were you thinking?

A Cat fan being confused is of no surprise. Reading comprehension is not your strong suit apparently! Where in my post did it say the Griz had to run the gauntlet? The only implied statement was the Cats would have a tougher schedule this year. Some BSC teams inevitably have to run a gauntlet in comparison to other teams soft schedules. Idaho for example, has a no cake walk this year. Cats had very soft schedules two years in a row.

I’ll take that bet. Methinks you haven’t seen our schedule yet it looks like yours from last year 😎

Bro. We hung 55 on y’all. We coulda played all D2 teams and then hung 55 on you. We were still light years better.

That is a weird response being that my comment had nothing to do with the cats or that game. You said the Griz won’t be in the top 10 and I said you obviously haven’t seen our schedule yet. Nothing less and nothing more but I know you guys have a lot of trouble with reading and comprehension…and PEDs and DUIs.

I believe your schedule was ranked slightly higher because of the ridiculous cake walk you started the year with. Wasn’t “a gauntlet compared to ours”. But yeah beat your chest at 6th place because last year was “so hard”! NW state must’ve banged your players up a ton! It was it South Dakota who was 9th in the Missouri valley? Or Illinois state?

Well, that seems to be the theme here. Downplaying the Cats success. What’ll it be after this season? Another cake walk for us? The Gris schedule was some how actually way harder than it appeared and that’s the reason for placing 6th again?

Do I have to explain the point that it doesn’t matter who they put in front of the Cats? They’ve just been better the last few seasons. The east schedule leads me to believe you can lose to sac and the Cats at home as well to Idaho and UCD on the road. That paired with your first 5 games… doesn’t scream seed to me for 2023. But what do I know. This place has all the answers, I just come for the show.

Montana will finish 9-2 and the cats 8-3 with a total beat down in Broookings and losses at Ogden and Missoula.
Montana will struggle with Idaho and have a trap game.

Last few seasons? We literally beat you in 2021.........
Last year, you guys needed some BS call from the refs to beat a horrible ewu team on the road, and a hail mary catch on the road at NAU to win against sub-par teams. You also needed FOUR botched snaps and a WIDE-OPEN dropped pass to beat weber at home. gtf outta here with your BS....you guys are currently a better team until the season starts, but acting like last year was your best season is laughable, you guys won three games on pure luck. You lost 2 of those 3 and probably don't go as far as you would have had to travel in the playoffs a round earlier and Lord knows your road performances weren't all spectacular

How are you this insecure?

Our schedule was objectively much harder than yours last year. That doesn't mean we were better, and you'll notice I never said we were.

I’m not even sure where to take this. You just wrote a paragraph on the legs of assumption. There’s a lot to unpack there.

Congrats to Herder for eliciting 2,400 plus views of something related to FCS football. Perhaps listen to the podcast on his site before we get to fifteen or more pages bashing his predictions. I think the rankings come on a sliding scale with fairly sound reasons as to whether or not the teams could be better or worse than this initial ranking.

Just in case - he notes that not much will be known about Montana until week six. Feels a little bit like Deja Vu all over again. I haven't gotten to the part where he talks about bozeman, and likely won't care what he says regardless. It's SDSU and the field.
