He had twenty years to free UM from BSC bondage...

Silvertip....you are right on the money with your post. Dennison continues to do damage by his influence over our Amish President.
you do know that Engstrom is Mormon not Amish, right?

Hutterite...too bloodthirsty to fire people to be a Quaker...

Overall I believe Dennison was god for the University, and even for athletics, although like everyone he made a few mistakes. His biggest mistake came in 1993 when he persuaded the other presidents in the BSC (other than Idaho and Boise State) to agree to reduce scholarships in football to 47. Faced with having programs compete in I-AA with 18 fewer scholarships the Idaho Board of Education finally relented and allowed Idaho and Boise State to move up to FBS. He tried to fix the mess by withdrawing the rule, but Idaho and BSU had the opportunity and took it.

His next biggest mistake was probably in 2003 when the WAC was adding teams after re-alignment and Montana had a small window to make the jump, combined with forcing Hogan to take the fall for the budget issue when he could have/should have stepped up himself.
The latter is well known because Hogan was not one of his "yes" men. The former, not so much. If true, that tells it all about his commitment to UM football.

The entire BSC except Boise and Idaho that wanted this, but Dennison could have and should have stopped it:

Great link; I was 2000 miles away in 1993 and missed this. And people here still like to flog BSU and Idaho for following Nevada in leaving this cheap group. Not sure the president's level of support for BSC football has changed in twenty years. Dennison wanted to take us to 45 schollies, a DII level at the time. What a president; we would have zero NCs if he had had his way. They did not want BSU and Idaho in the league because they were willing to invest in growth and keep a high bar for competition. The same reason ten years later why they did not want NDSU and SDSU. UNC and SUU were welcomed with open arms.

wow I assume this never went into effect or that it didn't last long? Can't really blame Idaho or Boise for wanting nothing to do with that. No way you can say anyone valued a national playoff with championship on one hand yet proposing something that would make it impossible to attain with the other hand.

LTC, I doubt that they were blaming the cats. It is just unfortunate the two salaries are tied together and even more sad MSU is terrible at negotiating a salary.

given the job she is doing they are underpaying her. get what ya pay for

The Griz have missed the playoffs 2 out of the last 3 years, are located in arguably the worst recruiting location in the country, yet people still hold onto the fantasy of moving up? Moving up will mean even higher ticket costs, and maybe the occasional bowl in Mississippi during a rainstorm against some southern team or a MAC team.

More of a fantasy to hold onto is that the BSC and FCS are as good as ever and have a bright future.

Grizbeer....no, I didn't know Engstrom is Mormon. I suspect Haslam is Mormon, but don't actually know.

everyone = remember that old Tip was an outspoken proponent of Montana joining the WAC.

:o :o :o :o :o :o

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference said Monday that it has become apparent the league won't have enough football members to compete after this season, and his focus now is on trying to keep the conference together for other sports. The 50-year-old WAC would be the first Division I conference to give up on football since the Southwest Conference dissolved in 1995, and it might go the way of the SWC, too, and cease to exist altogether. "It doesn't mean we've given up on the idea of football for the future, but it's apparent we don't have enough members in 2013 to play football," Jeff Hurd told The Associated Press.

Dennison must have missed that memo about football being priority number one. ;)

And call me crazy but what the hell does Haslam being Amish, Hutterite or Mormon have to do with anything related to him doing his job?

Back to lurking...

Nothing.

I am glad that UM did not blindly follow Tip and his "move up, move anywhere" buddies. Can you imagine what Tip and his buddies would be doing right now if UM had gone to the WAC and was left as an independent without a football conference? Tip, got any investment advice ?

Before we re-anoint George as "King", let's remember that he completely threw Hogan under the bus during the budget crisis in the that led to Hogan's firing. He conveniently forgot all of the meetings that he was in that discussed the budget "systemic shortfall" for about 2 years before the shit hit the fan. Then he was SHOCKED!!! to hear about it.

Politicians will be politicians.

Why do you automatically assume the WAC would have imploded had the Griz/MSU accepted their invitations? You have no idea what would have happened...

What would have changed? Same result.

So now you're clairvoyant? You don't think there's maybe a chance that, had the Griz and MSU moved up, the conference wouldn't have imploded, and would still exist today, playing football as an FBS conference?

Clairvoyant AZGriz ?
Oh wise one, explain to me how the WAC would have survived !!!!
And while you are at it, tell me how many points the Griz scored in all their WAC conference games and how well the Griz defensive secondary did against the WAC quarterbacks. Give me details NostraDumbass.
No, I don't think that sinking ship could be saved. You and Tip probably have a different opinion.
