My question for you all is this: If bobby retires or is let go, and thats a big if, who would UofM be able to hire? Expectations: through the roof. Pay: low. Cost of living: high. Location: somewhat isolated. I don't know the intricacies of colleges hiring coaches, but I imagine that the pool will be relatively small. Thoughts?
I want to preface this post with saying I hope he does not retire or get fired or if he does retire that he retires after a national championship run. I also want that it’s a slow week of work for me. But if we are going down this rabbit hole, I think anyone across college athletics would say that Montana is still an incredible job. And with the current roster, I don’t think it’s unrealistic to say that it would be one that a guy could SEE themselves coming in and exceeding INITIAL expectation.
I don’t think it would attract many P5 coordinators, but for sure I think P5 position coaches. Those guys are realistically looking for a solid FCS head job, G5 coordinator job, or getting promoted at their current spot. So to that point if you look at position coaches across the western part of the country, I don’t think that’s unrealistic. The next demographic would be a G5 coordinator. Hate to say it but a good decision for Vigen. Most likely mountain west coordinators obviously. I don’t see us taking a serious look at an an FCS coordinator. I can’t think of one guy off the top of my head with the SDSU guy getting promoted. Maybe see how NDSU does this fall?
Lastly there is no D2 head man in the country that would turn this job down, although I don’t think there is any D2 coach that UM would look at.
I mean you look at the 35 under 35 list you’re going to find some pac 12/G5 guys that would jump at the opportunity (not that we would necessarily be interested). Jerry Neuheisel, Drew Hollingshead, Doug Deakin, CJ Cox is just a few guys. Quality candidates with regional ties, again, not that we would want them but a list of names that would be attracted to Montana.
Disclaimer, this post is a what if scenario and doesn’t mean I have any qualms with the current coaching staff and have high expectations for the Grizzlies this year.
