Haslam's Recent Interview on Where UM Is

This deserves its own thread for discussion. Below are paraphrases of Haslam's words.

We and MSU are governed by the same Board of Regents and we are tied together. When I talk of "we", I mean both UM and MSU.

It all comes down to money. That's the challenge.

Our fans furnish 65-70% of our money. We can't expect them to contribute more for a bigger budget.

He said UM's $24 million budget would have to increase to $40 million.

Things (realignment) have calmed down for awhile. MW has its 8, but will likely want to expand. Pac-12 is one short.

Our "fit", I think he met location and the schools, etc., make UM more compatible with MW.

We aren't going to Conf USA.Too far away.

Look at the proposed House Settlement. Big changes. Look at the roster limits part. Will UM want to opt in to that, or not.

Recent comments in the other thread should get reposted here.

He also says:

"The MEC has found it's 8th (team). I imagine they will want to go bigger than that. Our fit is far-more the mountain west than the institutions that are there now.

We just want to be prepared. We feel we have our facilities in a spot where we're prepared, and our fan base is certainly attractive and the tv audience that we bring". It's calmed down, but it will ramp back up again when the mwc decides what it wants to do".

The entire interview leads one to believe it's simply a matter of time.

The Montana Esports Conference? Wow the last thing I expected on egris was esports talk. But in reality the gris would fit very well in the MEC with Northern, Tech, Carroll, MSU-B, and others.

Actually, as he said, it is a matter of money for the increased budget to $40 million and to the approval of BOR.

Where will the money come from? Spell it out for us.

Does UM want to opt in to unlimited scholarships up to the new roster limit? 90, I believe.

As I have said before, UM is looking and has had meetings, including with Bodnar.

Like I think I mentioned in the game thread, right after they aired Riley chatting with Haslam, there was a definite shift in tone/language from previous talks Haslam’s had on the same subject.
Perhaps, but I didn’t see a big shift from recent times. From we are right where we should be, yes, a shift from that.

And about 20 million.

UM wouldn’t opt in to all the pay for play stuff that the P5 schools would. They would likely do whatever the other MWC schools do. For the most part, those are very like minded institutions

Same place it comes from for every fbs program.

You're welcome.

No. Many low level and low life programs don’t have $40 or $50 million budgets. Some FCS schools opt to stay at FCS. Liberals like you think money grows on trees. I can’t imagine the BOR regents would approve this for the schools, unless FCS truly wasn’t an opttion or falling apart. I agree things are a changin.

Lol way to turn it into a political identity issue. Hint: it’s not just liberals who are in support with a move up, even with the expenditure increase.
