Guess the Attendance--Reno

That's embarrassing. Guarantee MSU would have had much better attendance for the ladies. Weber would have had a good turnout, most definitely. We could have had 7k or so for any game Weber is slated in. Instead, we get this.

First round women's attendance in Missoula last year, when there were only 8 teams in tourney.

308, 269, 638, 2914 (Lady Griz)

See last year's first round attendance in Missoula.

I think we all knew this could be embarrassing and I think it will continue to be so. I guess we will see how the men's games do. I would guess poorly. I am pretty confident even Billings (one of the considered sites) would draw far more fans than Reno.

I should have specified. I meant that the host teams will at least have good turnouts. Now, no one will have good turnouts.

Agreed. Have some friends in Billings who have no affiliation with any team in the Sky and they had expressed interest in going had Billings won the bid.

My dad has a group of friends that go to all of the West High games as well as many of the Skyview and Senior high games. They also go to as many Rocky and Eastern (MSU- Billings) games as they can. They go to divisional and state tourneys of all classes when they are in town. They also travel to the double A tourney each year. I don't think they are particularly unique and I think there are a lot BBall fans in Billings and the BSC may have done reasonably well there.

There would be a better turnout if the championships were held in Alberton.

I have mentioned this in the past. How many "visitors" travel to attend basketball games at any of the Big Sky schools? The best turnout might be 300 or so Wombats for a Griz-Cat game or vice-versa. The more typical is probably 20-50.

The BSC solution?

Make everyone a "visitor."

Lets not mistake low attendance numbers for women's tournament games some emblematic of some larger problem for the conference. In fact a 300 average for games yesterday (lets say that is somewhat aggressive) but most of the women who were on the floor yesterday, the crowd was roughly par for the course. For MT, MSU and UND that is obviously a sharp departure from normal attendance. Not trying to be sexist here, because I enjoy watching women's basketball but I seriously doubt the BSC expected huge attendance numbers for the women's side of the tournament. Maybe the hope is when the tournaments combine on Friday and Saturday the attendance will increase.

What will be interesting is how much of a departure from the average for men's games today will be. My guess is about a 1,200 average today. If it is at that average, it would be near the median average if you were to eliminate Weber and Montana from the mix. Again for Montana and WSU at any point that is going to appear as if they are playing in an empty gym, but for the vast majority today's games isn't going to be a vast departure from the norm.

All I hear on this board is how bad the tourney is and how terrible the conference is but, how many of you would have attended a monday afternoon first round game no matter where it was??? Hell are you all telling me that if the Griz played in the WCC that you all would be in vegas this morning? This may be a terrible fail and the conference may have to go back to the old format who knows. I can't believe how many of you seem to be hoping this is a failure.

Thanks for pointing that out about Monday and Tuesday day games. I don't want it to fail, but rather have a pragmatic outlook on its success or failure. If my schedule were different I would have made the trip from Southern Idaho for the weekend.

Like I said in the other thread about the tournament is the logical outcome of a conference trying to find ways to improve its stature. I do believe this is a step in the right direction. You can't force interest in a tournament by anyone outside of the conference and frankly for 80% of the teams in the conference, they won't drive across town or down the block to watch.

This is the difference maker. Last year when both tournaments were in Missoula I attended as many of the games as I could ( I'm a student so I couldn't catch all of them but I either went to the games when I wasn't in class or was a useless student and watched the games on my laptop/phone from across campus :thumb: ). I get what you're trying to say but there still are fans in the host cities of BSC schools that just love basketball and will watch as many games as possible. The first rounds aren't what everyone is upset about IMO, it's the prospect of having the semis/championship played in an empty gym in front of a few traveling fans and a few people who really don't care that much who wins.

I agree. Egriz seems to want this conference to fail which is a surprise since UM does not have the resources to "move up". I had the same thoughts. I don't recall seeing large numbers of UM fans in gyms other than UM in the old format. How many would be in Ogden for the first game, second, or even the finals should UM have gotten that far? This is a trial run. When the Pac 10 began their tournament it was questioned, or the need was, at any rate. Now it is huge. I hope UM and Weber do meet for the championship and Bruenig can prove that he should be the MVP, and I assume, all the Egriz posters will be there.

Fiction. Wanting it to fail and wanting (hoping? Wishing?) it to be better are 2 different things. IMHO, trying to make the conference "better" doesn't equal inviting every school west of the Mississippi into the conference, nor does getting "better" equal giving conference teams with terrible conference records a "participation" ribbon in the conference tournament.

The biggest puke of all (in a "better" conference): Giving Boston College, which did not win a single conference game in the ACC, a spot in the playoffs. But hey, they only lost by 22 points to the #11 seed.
