Groff Interviews Justin Ford

You know a guy is a good db when people complain about when and where he got a couple of his nine interceptions. I think if we had a poll 100% of coaches would take a guy with that issue and if they don't they should be fired immediately.

  Agreed 100%

It's not asking too much for DI college DBs to be smart on 4th down passes. You don't have to catch the ball for the turnover on downs. We were schooled on that in HS and I cannot remember one of our DBs pulling a rock by gifting the desperate passing team punt-like yardage by a 4th down INT that couldn't be returned.

I don't remember Ford doing this, but if he did it was a n unforced error.

I believe he did it twice last year.

i only remember one, a long pass that should have been knocked down. not a big deal at this level, but if he wants to play in the nfl, he needs to show better situational awareness than that in the future, because based on his speed and size, he's going to need to check some extra boxes to get a chance.

I think the other one he picked in the endzone? Which may have been smart if the opposing team was inside the 20.

You guys are mad that he intercepted a pass with 0:01 left before halftime that moved us from our 36 to our 11.

It did not matter, unless you really wanted us to take the knee 25 yards farther up-field.

And if you come back with a hypothetical, how many times have you seen a play where the defender tries to knock the ball down, but it ends up bouncing weird and becoming a completion? (More than never!)

Stop it.

Great post, 1122! It moves the conversation from, I think I remember that happening one time, to the actual circumstances of the play.

We need far more admonitions like “stop it” on this site. Not that anyone is likely to follow them but it’s a great sentiment.

This obviously wasn't the one vs. Sac State with 9 minutes left in 2nd quarter Griz down 7 - 3....Sac going for it from the 45 yard line on 4th and 7. Ford intercepted it (diving to the ground) and Griz began their drive from their own 19 (not the 45!). That was the actual circumstance of the play.

Sac had false started on 4th and 2 from the 40 and still went for it on 4th and 7. The interception worked out better for Sac than a punt to the end zone and cost the Griz 26 yards. At that point in the game it was big field position play. Griz went three and out....punted.....Sac went up 14 - 3 on their next drive.

Griz were going 3/out on that drive anyways, whether it was from the 19 or the 45.

Whatever......at the time it seemed a 26 yard mistake......it still does....and did have an effect on field position in a game the Griz lost. 1122 and Ursa must have missed it!

Yep, coaches should have benched Ford immediately. Surprised he saw any action for the rest of the season.

If you watch the tape, you can see Baer yell at Ford after the interception, "What the fuck do you think you're doing? An interception?! You can't just go doing what I and every other coach you've ever had have told you for your entire career! Do you have any idea what a bunch of washed-up dudes on the internet are going to say about you? Your funeral, pal."

Even great players make mistakes. I even saw Kupp drop a pass. But mental mistakes should go out with experience. Ford's a great college corner and had a great season, but that was not one of his finest moments.

Washed up? Washed up? BS, I can type as good as ever. Better, with auto-correct.

So it didn't even matter? lol

We had 2 drives that started in better field position than that on that day and got 0 points out of those drives.

Again, though, I can pull up a myriad of college football plays on youtube where the defender "simply needs to knock the ball down", tries to do that, and it ends up being caught because, in football, the ball is an oblong shape that sometimes doesn't bounce where you think it will.

So if you want to say "He probably should have knocked that pass down, but it's not that big of a deal", fine, but I remind you we're doing this with the benefit of hindsight.

However the idea that he won't make it in the NFL because he gets "dumb" INTs is ridiculous.

So true.
You teach a dog to sic em.
You cannot teach them to nibble em
Besides, I will take the -26yards and the difference in MOMENTUM of a pic over a batted pass. Mrs. Mo is a fickle bitch
Also the personal boost for #21. Look at the kid’s streak! Huge motivator.

Nah man, you tell the guy that got 9 INTs to be better. If he were smarter, he only would've had 7.
