Griz vs. weber game thread.

It was like watching a game at the Smith Spectrum in Logan. :roll: Stopped watching with about 5 minutes left, because I got tired of watching MOntana shoot freethrows. Weber was not allowed to play defense, way too many one-sided ticky tacks to.

Weber's defense was often overly aggressive. Weber deserved most of its fouls (and a few more). Of course, there were also a few questionable or bad calls on them. They were hitting AJ on the perimeter on screens, right in front of the ref. Almost knocked him down several times. Had to be called. AJ drew some fouls under the basket in the second half. All looked like good calls to me, and I was sitting in the front row at that end. Looked like a possible bad call in front of the Weber bench from where I was. Weber was pushing very hard on the posts, but no calls were made.

Looks like the Weber coach doesn't agree with this Weber poster. Here's his quote in today's Missoulian:

"I had no problem with the officials. The aggressive team is going to get the calls."
 
Anyone who is blaming officials simply doesn't know shit about the game of basketball. Take a little lesson from Coach Rahe, he said it very simply, the aggressor gets the calls. Weber was on their heels, not on their toes. Cherry was blowing past them, and Weber would do is grab, or get beat. Defense is played with the feet, not the arms.

Kyle, if you want to discuss hoops then go for it. If all you want to do is whine, the go back to your little weber board, if there even is one, and cry yourself a river. The best team last night was the Griz. Your Coach and his players know it, so nut up and accept the fact your team got spanked. Remind you of the ass kicking we gave your FB team? ;)
 
Weber took a lot more shots from outside than the Griz did so of course they weren't getting as many foul calls. The Griz were more aggressively taking the ball to the basket. Weber was 7 of 23 from 3 point line; Griz were 6 of 12. (I hate to say it, but when the Weber guards did drive, they had pretty open layups. They were at the 3 point line, they'd do a head fake, and then make a nice drive along the baseline, etc.)

Grizzlies also were more aggressive on the boards, 38 of 29.

The officials didn't create those stats, the Grizzlies did it with hard work.

In the process of getting into the paint more often, of getting position near the basket or going to the bucket, the Grizzlies are naturally going to have more calls go their way.

Considering the above numbers, maybe what is surprising is that Weber didn't get into worse foul trouble.
 
I read an article about the cat/isu game and it looks like Amorrow Morgan got a bad ankle sprain and will be unavailable for tonight's game. Too bad. I would have liked to see how badly the Griz kicked them at full strength. I really dislike isu.

Yea - I gave the students some shit on another thread on how they were not showing up, but it was Great to see them in masses last night! Hope I'm not premature in saying this but am thinking Griz Basketball is getting back on the map - Great to see a good crowd last night! That was a Fun game! :clap:
 
Well the Griz did their part. Biggest crowd of the year and they beat Weber handily. Now they can't do what they did during the previous largest crowd, NAU, and follow that up with a dud the following night. Nothing will deflate fan enthusiasm faster than inconsistancy.

I honestly think the difference could have been Banny. That guy just has a knack for getting himself in the right position for a board. As far as offensively, Weber actually did get quite a few offensive board which was frustrating, because our guys had a few lapses on boxing out, but fortunately some put backs didn't go down for Weber.
 
Well, I attended my first Griz B-Ball game in 20+ yrs. last night (recently returned to Missoula). Wow...Griz B-Ball is a shell or it's former self. The days of 10,000 screaming fans in the Mad House that WAS the Adams Field house are gone. :-( The talent on the floor looked good. Nice win guys vs. Weber State. But OMG.,.4,500 fans. :-( That same game 25 yrs ago would have had 10,000 SCREAMING...RABID Fans. What has happened. :-( The arena is nice..seats are better but what is capacity now 7500? Plus it looked like someone ran out of money for the remodel with the old seats still in the north section?? The "big screen (aka small screen" was obstructed by a curtain hanging from the rafters.

What can we do to restore Griz B-Ball back to Glory??? If Villanova's B-Ball can be #2 in the nation and Football be FCS Champs there is NO reason that Griz B-Ball can't be better. Maybe something needs to be done to bring capacity back closer to 10,000 then bring in a real coaching staff that can recruit some more players with the talent of Will Cherry (looks like he is the real deal).

There is NO reason why the Griz can't have both a top notch Football and a top notch B-Ball program.

Welcome back Roger. Your comments on the crowd are similar to my thoughts when I returned to Missoula in 2001. As for your coaching comment, Tinkle is bringing in the talent, and he has learned coaching on the fly. This program is coming around, and I feel Tinkle is the right man for the job.

You are fortunate to have returned now. Try returning when Kennedy was coach. For me, that was as sad of college basketball as it could get. Larry, and now Wayne have done a good job, just not as quick as some fans would like.
 
Sounds like you need to return to whatever NBA city you came from. But if you do that forget about the "d " the Grizzlies play it won't happen there. This team is as talented as any I'm seen in the last forty plus years. And Tinkle is the best recruiter since Jud and he did a lot his recruiting on WSU's budget

I was able to wtch the second half on Big Sky Tv last night..and I agree...at least, as far as anyone could tell....the crowd seemed to be passive and not very loud...but, the Grizzlies showed just how good they could be, although, I think Weber is very down this year...and, the future of basketball at UM is going to get very good with the addition of one of the top players in LA as guard, next year....On this board last year when Cherry was announced as a signee many posters said he would make only a slight difference..Having seen him in action, I knew...UM got a guy that the PAC 10 and others would love to have....and, the kid from Westchester is now getting some real attention...if he follows through, look for the Griz to be a Western powerhouse...

Bring in "a real coaching staff"?? :? I thought the pretend coaching staff did a pretty nice job last night :thumb: and are doing a real fine job in the recruiting department. Also, when we can't ever fill a 7500 seat arena, it is going to be a challenge (actually impossible) to justify spending the money to increase the capacity. I do agree that having the curtain raised so that more than half the attendees can see the big screen is a good idea :idea: . I sit in the lower part of the southern upper bowl and can't see it.

It may not have been obvious from the Bigskytv feed, but the crowd was loud as Tinkle stated in the post game interview. I also don't agree that Weber is "very down". They are alone in first place and really have a good looking team with tons of athleticism and pretty balanced scoring.
 
Glad to hear that I couldn't hear the crowd noise, after all, that is half the fun for the students and players...I disagree about Weber...this is not a good year for them and their schedule is weak..they are in first place but that means little. Montana really showed their potential last night and left little doubt who has the inside track to win the conference if they stay as focused and consistent as they seem to be now.. And, balanced scoring is great, but only if you stop the other team from scoring more....duh...And, on a contrary note, I fail to see how Selvig is getting so many kudos when he rarely tries for a rebound and sort of exists passively on the floor...Now, I confess, I have seen the Griz play live only once and he was more of a liability in spite of the win, but last night, I saw him make a couple of great passes and a couple of shots....the real talent here are the guards and Staudacher (sp?)....if they all perform, great....but next year is going to be something special in football and basketball.
 
Coach Tinkle has the basketball program headed in a positive direction. We must continue to improve the quality of the teams on our schedule as we will improve our team play by playing the best opponents on a regular basis.
 
Unfortunately it's not too realistic in thinking the Griz will win or tie for the regular season as the Griz are still two games behind with the schedule winding down. Tonight we better be cat fans as we really need another Wildcat lose and then a big road trip sweep next weeked in Portland and Cheney. And if that wasn't enough still another loss by Weber some place. And that's for only a tie. No wonder the Weber posters on egriz are feeling rather smug. Then if you don't win the regular seasong you may have to win the tournament on the road unless you have an improbable scenario like last year when the cats made it easy for Portland by winning twice on the road.
