Griz vs. weber game thread.

If they quit fouling the refs would quit winning the game for UM

The Grizzlies continue to impress after some wobbly performances a few weeks back. A few too many turnovers, but defense looked good, and they been attacking the basket, getting it inside to the big guys, and kicking it out when the shot isn't there. Showing poise. Not settling for jump shots, and gunning up 3 pointers the first chance they get. Really had Weber on their heels the whole game.

What a great W for the GRIZ, and we can all thank the CATS for our turnaround and new attitude. We finally have an attacking and aggressive attitude, on both ends of the courts. We are rebounding like much better, but still have a few lapses. We have figured out how to effectively utilize Staudacher's shooting. His teammates are getting him open, and he has a shoot 1st mentality, yet still not forcing his shots. He is basically ready shoot before he catches the ball, which he has always been ready, just did not.
This is the team we expected to see all year finally. I still think they are capable of an occasional stinker game, but they are consistently playing good ball now. I am confident that will remain, based on the aggressiveness of AJ and Cherry. These 2 have an attitude of they will not be denied, and are challenging opponents to shut them down, yet still contain Staudacher outside, Qvale inside, and Selvig everywhere.
For anyone that believes penetrating the lane is not important, this years GRIZ are evidence how important it is. Since going to the attack mentality the offense has become much more consistent, and looks like a true offense now. I also noticed we are implementing many more screens, it helps Stauds most, but Cherry and AJ are getting more opportunities now too.
Another factor is Selvig's presence in the offense. He is a solid scorer, but is a dynamic passer, and makes passes most do not see, let alone attempt. It looks like Tinkle has removed the reigns off Selvig and Cherry, and just letting them play. Maybe before Tinkle was too afraid of costly turnovers with those 2, but with their performance now, we can live with a few turnovers.
Two weeks ago, we only had confidence in AJ. Now we have confidence in Cherry, Selvig, Staudacher too. Banny was huge tonight, but McGillis had played better as of late too.
I have always loved GRIZ basketball, but my confindence has been up and down. It is UP now. It is not up because of the Wins, but because of the improved play. We are playing nice looking basketbal and still playing tough. Before we were playing hard, but ugly more times than not.
Thank you coaches and players for the improvement, and for becoming a true basketball team. Thank you for letting me enjoy GRIZ basketball again. My only advise now is "Do not let up, and keep believing in one another." "This is one damn good team, just keep doing what you are doing."
Now go kick some Bengal butt Saturday night!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today, the stock markets had a major dip, what they call "capitulation," after falling for the last week or two. They are down about ten percent from their highs at the start of January. Anyway, capitulation is the point at which a lot of investors throw up their hands and leave the market, but it also marks an abrupt turning point where the market makes a sudden turn back up.
The MSU game reminds me of that. The Grizzlies were playing poorly, and they really stunk in that game. It was like a point of capitulation. They got it out of their system, and now they are headed back toward the peak at the right time of the year.

Just got back from the game. It was worth the 6+ hour round trip and all the crappy roads. That was the best crowd out of the 4 games I have been able to attend this year. It helped, too, that I got to sit courtside.
I LOVE this starting line-up and Selvig as the 6th man. I hope Tinkle considers sticking with this one. I think this line-up is the best defensively and will allow UM to get ahead early as we saw tonight. I know it's been mentioned a few times already, but Selvig's passing ability and court-vision/sense are amazing. His behind the back dish to Ward (pretty sure) was phenomenal. The defense is really something and even when the O struggles, there is no reason this team should ever struggle defensively with the talent they have on the floor.
Kyle, careful what you wish for, the Griz bigs were being pulled down all night in the paint going for rebounds and that wasn't being called at all. However, I will give you the last foul on Panos was pretty ticky-tack. Either, way, though, he was going to foul out, AJ and Cherry knew who was in trouble and they were drawing the matchups to exploit that. The Griz played very smart basketball.
Kudos to Session, too. He had one of the best put-back dunks I have ever seen live. That guy gets way above the rim. In fact, the whole Weber team could put the Griz to shame in a dunking contest.
Great game, Men, I am still holding my breath that they can keep this up.

Great game plan by the Grizzles, bad shooting by the Wildcats, very very very bad one-sided officiating.
Pretty much sums it up.
It was like watching a game at the Smith Spectrum in Logan. :roll: Stopped watching with about 5 minutes left, because I got tired of watching MOntana shoot freethrows. Weber was not allowed to play defense, way too many one-sided ticky tacks to.

wildkyle - You can't blame the refs on this one. If you would've seen the muggings that were happening under the Griz basket you would've agreed with the calls. There was a lot of grabbing every time Cherry or AJ tried to drive. I sit on that end and Weber was fouling a ton to begin that second half. Huge thumbs up to our players for coming out aggressive in that second half and putting weber back on their heels.
Banny played a hell of a game. He was great defensively and as always great rebounding. How about that assist by him when he went after the loose ball and while on the ground found Staudacher for 3? It was nice to see him get some quality minutes!
I really like what we are all seeing out of this team at this point in the season. AJ and Cherry are being very aggressive on offense and making things happen. Our defense is playing very well (our zone especially). This team has so many weapons out there, it's really nice to finally see them all being utilized. Earlier in the conference season it seemed like our offense was ...well.... content to just do the weave for the first 10-15 seconds and then hope someone would make a play. Now there seems to be a LOT more movement out there, and for the first time in a long time the Griz are the aggressors.
Before teams knew they needed to stop AJ...and after that, someone else might have big game, but stopping AJ was the key, and the offense usually struggled badly if AJ was contained. Now if AJ is not scoring 20 points, we got Cherry who seems to be able to get around any defender, Stauds who is getting way more open looks than he did earlier in the season and playing great, Qvale who has been very good inside all year, Selvig who can hurt the other team from anywhere on the court (passing and shooting) and many other players who seem to be playing with a renewed confidence all of a sudden. If they keep playing like this, they'll be very hard to beat!
