Griz Vs. OSU Game Thread

I have a hard time thinking of a better game by a Griz center.

The only thing that comes close in my mind might be Matt Kempfert's game at Boise St where he hit 14 out of 14 shots to lead the Griz to a win over BSU. For an all around game though, Q's performance tonight is pretty hard to beat.

Best game in a long time. This team is so athletic. If we get some outside shooting we could be dangerous come tourney time. "Angus" was the kids name for OSU to answer an earlier poster's question. Big kid (6'10") and he rained a couple threes. We flat out did NOT let up tonight on defense. Everytime they made a run and caught up, we responded and pulled away. This is team you want to watch. Wish more people showed up. Probably 4500 reported attendance with closer to 3800 in the seats. Come on Griz fans lets get behind this team. Krysko had some great games but certainly nothing that completely overshadowed Q's game tonight. Huge.

Qvale looked like an NBA guy against boys. He had two really nifty double pump moves that Ive never seen before to go with the massive jams...great great game!
Cherry was inches away on several more steals all night long, shooting was great and at one point hit 4 FT's in a row that got the crowd going. His clear out and drive at the end was a thing of beauty. OSU knew it was coming and couldnt stop it.
It was a big and loud crowd that got the team pumped. Fun team and they made a lot more folks fans tonight.
4,300? My only question is... it took $17 million Obama dollars to keep his brother-in-law's job as the head coach at OSU last year... I wonder how much it will cost this year?? Way to go GRIZ!!! More proof of stimulus dollars pissed away.

yeah, qvale is actually starting to play like an unstoppable force. he played great tonight. As close as the game was, if the Griz make at least 50% of the bunnies they missed, it's a blowout. if they get it clicking, this team could be good, just need at least the fucking threat of one more outside shooter to free up qvale, cherry to drive and selvig to hit a couple. glad I went, and I will be going back.

I went to the game and it was flat out exciting! Great performances by Qvale and Cherry! One big worry though has to be the bench. We got three points (all by Steward) from the bench tonight. I really would like to see what Autry can do. After the Griz lead disappeared in the first half, they regained it with Jamar at the two and Steward at the three. Still, right now, this team is barely six deep in terms of players who consistently contribute.

Those of us not ignoring you are definitely laughing at you, and it will likely never go any further than that.

Great game tonight. It would be difficult to criticize anything about tonight's game other than what has already been discussed. OSU is a very athletic and a young team and will only get better as the year progresses. My question is when we were up by six with 50.9 seconds to play they didn't try and foul? It wasen't until the under 20 time did they try and foul???? With our poor percentage at the line this was very questionable coaching on their part. Must be an Obama thing.
Anyway great game execution by the Griz and great game prep by the coaches. We appeared to answer all of their traps with little difficulty. Eleven turnovers for the game is very impressive. I think only three in the second half.
Cherry and Quale are going to make some noise this year in the Big Sky. For those of you who didn't attend you missed a masterful coaching job by the staff. You could see they have really matured as a staff. I hope we are able to keep them all around for some time to come.

I thought that was very strange that they didn't try to foul towards the end. And I went on one of their fan blog sites and some of the fans were asking the same question: Why didn't our coach have our players fouling UM there at the end of the game, because we know the Griz are crappy foul shooters?

Fortunately, they didn't do it, and it got the game over quickly. Odds are it wouldn't have worked, but you never know.

Just got back from the game. It was worth the drive over the divide. FINALLY, a Tinkle-lead team put on a show when the fans showed up to watch. The last few years when we get a decent crowd the boys would disappoint, i.e. the Griz/Cat game last year. (That was not an attempt to slam Tinkle, just wanted to show how far this team and this coaching staff have come.) The boys were loving the crowd tonight. I would give the crowd a solid B grade. Could have been more into it at the beginning but the crowd was pretty appreciative and into the game by the last part of the game.

Everyone knows Qvale was a beast tonight and his three dunks were sick! Cherry was also, of course, great. Everyone has covered them. I know some people are concerned about wood and as far as his outside shot, I am too, but I LOVE what he brings to the game as far as his ability to drive. His ball-fake layup was amazing tonight. If he could just dust the rust off his 3-ball this team would be so much more dynamic. I know people were clammoring for better 3-point shooting and I think Jamar may be the guy to look for, he was able to hit the few he put up. Again, I think he is a lot like Vassy was but with an offensive game to go along with the defense and rebounding. Selvig may be lost on his shot this year, but he is valuable when he isn't scoring, he creates havoc on Defense and that is what this team is all about. I love it, Defense comes first and feeds your offense.

It was mentioned before and is worth mentioning again. I didn't realize it until Mick said it in the post-game, but our bench was outscored 45-3. That's insane. But it also speaks to how good our starting five are when they are on the court. They played in control and didn't get into foul trouble with the exception of Selvig. It could be problematic, though, if others start to get into foul trouble in a physical game and either Cherry or Qvale have to sit for long stretches. If we can get contributions from the bench, along with some more reliable perimiter shooting, this team will be almost impossible to stop. They are that good.

If you were sitting close to the bench, you noticed during timeouts that every player whether they were going into the game or riding the pine was very attentive to Tinkle. I think it shows the respect he commands from them and their willingness to play unselfish team basketball. These guys are all about team and it shows during the game and during the breaks.

Playerrep, I know you like to talk-up the kids, that's great, but Art did not play well tonight. His effort isn't questioned, it was there, but when you brick a layup off the backboard that you should have easily made, that's an off night. It showed in his body language, you could see that he was beating himself up about it, too. Maybe that is where the problem is with the team FT shooting woes as a whole. Do they pressure themselves too much to hit the shots and choke because they don't want to let down their teammates/coaches? It's so odd. Besides Qvale/Cherry, no one could hit a FT.

The Beavers are a good team. They could shoot the lights out if given the chance and there were a few 3's from waaaaaaay downtown. #22 was very quick and easily had the dunk of the night. Angus is everything we want from Selvig. Fearless on the Post and able to step out and knock down the 3. His last 3 that he made was with Qvale's huge hand square in his face. Overall, they made a lot of great, contested shots. It wasn't for lack of D, they were just a good team. However, like dancingbear said, WTF were their coaches thinking when they didn't foul with 50 seconds left? (Also, pretty sure they were only down 5 at that point, but could be wrong.) ANYONE who scouts the Griz know they can't hit a FT. They let them dribble around and then Will gets a layup. Insane. I am glad they did it, though. Whatever.

Great game. Worth the trip from Belgrade. Wish I could make more of them. I would be at the Weber game if it were a night game but the powers that be f#@ked that one up nicely. Likely our biggest home game of the year and it's at 2PM. F#$K!

Go Griz!

Could this be the turnaround game for our fanbase? I sure hope so. I also see the the UCLA and Oregon State games as Tinkle's signature wins.

It is truly amazing how people on egriz are getting behind Tinkle and his team now. I am loving it!!!!

Come on where are the Tinkle bashers now. I think a few of you owe Tinkle an apology, or at least admit you were wrong about Tinkle as a coach. Shooting aside, Tinkle has surpassed LK as a coach. I pray Tinkle stays at Montana like Selvig has. Please Wayne!!!! :thumb:

Surpassing LK as a coach in what capacity?

Well, not sure what to say to that...I think Tinkle is a great guy and obviously a good coach that has earned respect. I see him as more adaptable than Selvig...the game for the women at UM has passed them by...I hope Tinks never lets that happen....and I doubt he will.
