I think the tallest player for Montana on the floor is Lopez at 6'5". That is some very small ball.

I would say Dunn.mtgrizrule said:Who's looking better at PG, Deshields or Dunn?

Tinkle needs to figure out and get it across to the players how to put pressure on the perimeter. How many 3s has Minn, made?Potomac Griz said:GrizLA said:a surprising blow out but UM has some very good things going, in spite of what the score says. Just not consistent.
Agreed. We've seen a lot of positives in this game even though it's a blowout. Some negatives though too of course which is to be expected in the first game of the season against a team from a major conference like this.
especially on the glass! 44-27, 14 offensive boards for the gophers to our 4...tough to competeStumptownGriz said:got our asses kicked. onto the next game.

There have been a few people on here that have thought Dunn would be the starter by conference season and I have to say I thought that was nonsense. After tonight I have to admit they might be right. Deshields is very good when he plays like a typical play-starting point guard. Problem is, he plays like that very rarely. He just does not get that he is a PG and not built or skilled to be a finisher, he never has got that way of thinking and at this point in his career its hard to see how he ever will. Dunn looks like he will be a special player. His time as a starter might come sooner than I thought.Agent G said:Who told Keron he's Kobe? He doesn't have the skill to match the shots he takes and many of the decisions he makes. He did 1 good play to 3 bad plays in this game. Dunn definitely played better at point guard. As he gets more comfortable with the speed/strength of the college game, he'll be even better.
grizzlyjournal said:I agree with the general consensus here regarding Montana's frontcourt play. Minnesota officially outrebounded the Griz 45-29. Bad enough. But the shocker was that Montana's combined 4-5 players got outrebounded by UM guards 18-6! Hutch: 0 boards. Martin: 1 board. Kemp: 3 (in 2 minutes of play). Better to put Kareem (6 boards) in the post. I don't mean to sound cynical, but the flow of this game hinted that Montana's top 8 players were all guards. Small ball redux.
Worse even: how does anyone explain the number of point-blank dish passes in the paint that were simply booted out of bounds by our bigs? Yikes.
Positives:
Kareem & Gregory seemed to find themselves as the game developed. DeShields showed flashes, but will definitely get pushed by Dunn if he can't score more consistently
I loved how Dunn, Gfeller & Lopez played & shot. These three will get better with each game, I believe.I hope Weisner can "rebound" a bit. He played very tentatively on offense, but was respectable on defense.
Otherwise, Montana's second half defense was pretty pathetic. We'll need much better than that if we expect to win any on the road this season.
The only other factor was that Minnesota shot very well... even on contested shots. That probably says more about the gophers than about Montana's defense.
Lastly: 12-of-22 from the free throw line. Can't win games with that %.
It'll be interesting to see how they "rebound" on Thursday.
