Griz vs Minn

Now we are playing aggressive! Kareem is setting the tone and Mario Dunn is a blur out there! Loving the effort in the second half.

a surprising blow out but UM has some very good things going, in spite of what the score says. Just not consistent.

I agree. I think the team can get a W at SDSU. I'm also very impressed with Gfeller and Dunn.

Just got home from work and read the posts so far here. Sounds like if we were hitting shots this would be much closer. Meaning we are getting the ball in good position, just not taking advantage of it. Not surprised our rebounding is struggling. How is our defense been in this game? Who's looking better at PG, Deshields or Dunn?

Good to see Martin has few blocks. Sounds like offense from the post is non existent. Is this game as bad as the point margin so far? Late shifts suck when it conflicts with GRIZ Basketball.

Agreed. We've seen a lot of positives in this game even though it's a blowout. Some negatives though too of course which is to be expected in the first game of the season against a team from a major conference like this.

Tinkle needs to figure out and get it across to the players how to put pressure on the perimeter. How many 3s has Minn, made?

Just watched live stats, but all the bigs (Kemp, Hutch and Martin) seemed invisible.

Hutch was for the most part (0 rebounds) and too many fouls for just 11 minutes in there. Martin had a couple blocks and 1 rebound but got absolutely owned inside too the few minutes he was in (especially after Hutch got yanked early in the 2nd half).

Kemp had 3 rebounds, but didn't really impress yet.... Still he had more rebounds than our two bigs in less minutes.

Part of me has to wonder if Tinkle would be better off just throwing Kemp into the fire and going small right away. Kemp will come along and I'm confident will be contributing big time by conference, much like we saw with other new JC players. I'm sure Tinkle will get stuff figured out by conference.

I'm VERY encouraged by some things that don't show up on the stat sheet. For example, the Griz breaking Minn's press fairly easily for the most part.

Also very encouraged by how quick and athletic Dunn is. He's all over the damn court out there and I could see him being Very disruptive in the Big Sky on defense and a major press breaker on offense.

We have to remember this is the first real game of the season for the Griz. There are going to be some struggles early in the year while we try to figure out how to replace Ward's contributions and of course Cherry's. Even though this was a blowout loss I think this team has a LOT of potential and there were some definite positives in this game.

Tinkle will have this team ready to kick ass by conference time for sure :thumb:

Dunn was the best PG. DeShields needs to not stop in the lane on his drives when he has the bigs around. Martin was decent as Post. He at least affected shots. Grizzlies were better on the boards in the first half. Gfellar is a nice surprise. He's more physical than I thought he would be. It was a whooping, but it shouldn't have been that bad with the missed layups and shots that the Griz can normally make. There is at least some good to come out of this one unlike the Syracuse debacle.

Tinkle is a little depressed and upset. Says some guys did not show up. A few veterans let them down. Praising Dunn, Gfeller, Emerson, and Lopez though. Sounds very disappointed in the bigs. He did not say names about the veterans. Between the lines, think he is referring to the bigs. Now commenting why we went small. He says, he will make sure the bigs get what the GRIZ are trying to do, and get better.

Sounds like some tough love is in order for quite a few guys. Said he promises our guys will learn from this.

The Griz looked significantly better when they went small. I think Kemp will be fine in a short period of time. If Kemp comes around, and I am convinced he has the talent to do so, then I can envision a line up in which he and Weisner start at the posts. I have real doubts about Hutchison, and at this point Martin, being able to contribute enough to warrant significant playing time. I also thought Dunn, Gfeller and Lopez showed positive flashes. I was really surprised by how well Lopez played at a post position. I didn't expect to see him at all.

Who told Keron he's Kobe? He doesn't have the skill to match the shots he takes and many of the decisions he makes. He did 1 good play to 3 bad plays in this game. Dunn definitely played better at point guard. As he gets more comfortable with the speed/strength of the college game, he'll be even better.

I agree with the general consensus here regarding Montana's frontcourt play. Minnesota officially outrebounded the Griz 45-29. Bad enough. But the shocker was that Montana's combined 4-5 players got outrebounded by UM guards 18-6! Hutch: 0 boards. Martin: 1 board. Kemp: 3 (in 7 minutes of play). Better to put Kareem (6 boards) in the post. I don't mean to sound cynical, but the flow of this game hinted that Montana's top 8 players were all guards. Small ball redux.

Worse even: how does anyone explain the number of point-blank dish passes in the paint that were simply booted out of bounds by our bigs? Yikes.

Positives:

Kareem & Gregory seemed to find themselves as the game developed. DeShields showed flashes, but will definitely get pushed by Dunn if he can't score more consistently

I loved how Dunn, Gfeller & Lopez played & shot. These three will get better with each game, I believe.I hope Weisner can "rebound" a bit. He played very tentatively on offense, but was respectable on defense.

Otherwise, Montana's second half defense was pretty pathetic in critical junctures. We'll need much better than that if we expect to win any on the road this season.

The only other factor was that Minnesota shot very well... even on contested shots. That probably says more about the gophers than about Montana's defense.

Lastly: 12-of-22 from the free throw line. Can't win games with that %.

It'll be interesting to see how they "rebound" on Thursday.

There have been a few people on here that have thought Dunn would be the starter by conference season and I have to say I thought that was nonsense. After tonight I have to admit they might be right. Deshields is very good when he plays like a typical play-starting point guard. Problem is, he plays like that very rarely. He just does not get that he is a PG and not built or skilled to be a finisher, he never has got that way of thinking and at this point in his career its hard to see how he ever will. Dunn looks like he will be a special player. His time as a starter might come sooner than I thought.

Good summary, thanks. After watching Hutch the last few years it seems he just doesn't bring much to the table. Andy sounds like he's still raw but at least he may have some upside. Hollins has lit up Big Ten teams for awhile, so him getting 20 plus should be expected (grew up a Gopher fan and have watched him quite a bit the last couple years). Just keep improving, Griz. :thumb:
