Griz vs Lewis & Clark State

We have a hell of Defensive team and enough weapons on the bench to find scoring, It will be a good year, especially after Autry and Jamar gain some experience at Nevada and Utah,,,lol

Just back from the game.........Griz hot at first then ragged and little offense the rest of the half. Qvale had a nice half (and game). Second half the Griz exploded in large part due (off free throw shooting and all) to Cherry's energy and defense. He lost another bucket when Qvale goal tended on it. The last part of the game was really a L&C run against Griz second unit guys who couldn't find the bottom of the bucket. Overall, an uneven effort. I though Selvig looked somewhat tentative. Stockton had one nice spurt but also turned the ball over and picked up a couple of quick fouls. Ward scored inside but still looks undersized for playing the 5 (which he did when Qvale went out.) Wood hit some threes and missed about the same number. I do like his aggressiveness and court savvy. I thought Jamar looked pretty good and obviously has a ton of talent and court smarts. I don't like going three guard (no Steward or Jamar)) because of the drop off in defense and rebounding. There is still a lot of work to do here.

our free throw shooting carries on the tradition of horrible....I think we shot about 41%

LC made all of theirs....

fortunately that was their sole highlight, but seriously we continue to shoot like this and we lose a lot of games we should win. Cherry was like 0-8 with one shot completely missing the basket, backboard, ugh

D one guys must do better that this,

Thanks for the updates! Sounds like typical first game stuff aside from the free throws. I wonder how many FT Cherry shoots in a day? Maybe he needs to tripple it.

jitters probably, he should be fine :thumb:

Impressed with the defense and attitude of the team. they seem to be a very close knit team with abundant comraderie. lots of encouragement goin around in every way.

That being said are offense didnt look great. but i think it was a bit misleading due to a lot of missed, makeable shots.

BQ: played more aggressive offensively with a little added polish on his post moves. still puts the ball on the floor to much underneath and will miss some makeable shots but should be the best bigman in the league. very good defensively as always.

Selvig: looked tenative and settled for jumpers on the few occasions he shot. he passed up good looks to try to pass it off and needs to look for his shot a little more. made some plays harder than they had to be. he is gonna have a huge role in the offense though out of the high post. he is going to get a lot of other players easy buckets. incredible court vision period regardless of size. easily the best passer on the team. he will be a big weapon as long as he stays healthy. lengthy on deffense, he and bq are gonna block some shots.

Wood: gonna play a much bigger role than i expected. VERY impressed with his court sense and demeanor. quick release, shots werent falling but he doesnt hesitate, very confident. smart player, good defender. i think by the end of the year he will be a more effective version of stauds. not quite the shooter but a much better game off the bounce, quicker release, and a little better athelete. suprise of the newcomers so far.

Cherry: airballed his first FT and seemed to snowball from there. visibly frustrated with himself. no worries though he took his anger out on them (and the rim) on the defensive end. outstanding anticipation, total nightmare for opposing guards. gonna be a beast. elite athelete in the big sky.

Steward: also impressive, very active tenacious defender. gonna get us a lot of extra posessions and garbage points. like banny with a lot more ball skills.

Reader: limited playing time. impressive looking frame, looks to be a big 6'9". really needs strength tho he is fearless inside and has some polish in the post. tough call depends on what they think of hutch i guess. could certainly use a redshirt. no where near the player he will be as a redshirt senior. but could contribute some. very high ceiling.

Stockton: Steady, solid, we know wut he is.

Adasms: limited time, not as far along as the other two jcs. plays a bit out of control but always hustle. got in late hit a three rite away, then promptly took an ill advised three. he is a natural scorer so it may take he a little time to find his nitch. can shoot it and drive it.

Hutch: limited time, long, jangly, goofy, mean, and effective. coaches shouted compliments to him a few times. a garbage man who will do the dirty work and can finnish inside. not much of a post game.

Ward: Is gonna have a ton of his FGA's blocked but is fearless and will gather and go right back up. he is gonna score his points inside through sheer determination and soft touch. a tad undersized and not explosive, he throws his body around and uses solid positioning and footwork. had a SWEET fast break drive to the hoop that got the bench goin nuts.

Autry: Good kid, vocal, athletic, coachable, but he just does not have a feel for running the point on offense. solid defender who gives maximum effort but his decision making and understanding of the game from that position are not where they need to be. tinkl e upset with him about turnovers int the scrimmage as well as tonite. would love to redshirt him but i dont know if we will be able to. he is gonna be a very good player in the future. we shall see, very excited he is a griz.

Jamar: LOVE the kid. didnt stand out but you can just tell. has a very good mid range game, his three ball wasnt dropping but he has solid form. going to be a VERY good defender. is capable of being a star but also does all the little things that coaches love. Very lucky to have this kid here.

Weisnar: DNP

Farnesworth: DNP

Probably gonna be rough and tumble early on. but this team has HUGE potential and seemingly the right attitude tho get rollin come conference. gonna be a fun team to watch easily the most athletic team tinkle has had and there will be a much higher emphasis on pushing the tempo and gettig out on the break offensively and usig more extended pressure defenses.

PG Will Cherry missed his first 4 shots from the field and all 8 of his free throws  (how is that even possible?) in an exhibition game against NAIA Lewis-Clark State (picked to finish 6th in their 8 team conference) at home.

================================================================================================
From the Missoulian:

It was a tough start for Cherry, who worked hard on his outside shot all summer.

"It's really frustrating," he said. "It's an exhibition...shots weren't falling for me tonight. I guarantee that will never happen again. That was just an off night. I don't know what it was. Like my coaches say, I have to have a short-term memory."

Free throw shooting has been a MAJOR PROBLEM with Grizzly Basketball for sometime now. How many games will the Griz lose this season because of horrendus FREE throws?

Coaches need to hire me to make Cherry a good free throw shooter. I guarantee I could have him at 75% in no time.

Growler, believe me, I wish I could break his shot down to the basics too. I seen some obvious fundamental flaws last season. I only listened to the LC State game, but cannot wait to see him play to see what is going on now.

I have coached players that work on shooting very hard, and listen to their coaches. There are some players get so caught up in getting better, they mentally just do not get over it. Fortunately, Cherry is a guard and not a big with the same problem. Seriously, some bigs have too big of hands to make improvement more challenging (see Shaq). I am sure Cherry works hard and wants to get over it, it will take some time though, at this stage I am sure much of the battle is mentally.

He improved last year as the year progressed. Based on Tinkle's and Will's comments after the game, it sounds to me they know where the main problem is. His desire to succeed combined with his competitiveness works against him. A big part of this is him learning how to harness his emotions when he struggles. To be honest, other than his shooting (perimeter and FT) this guy is as a complete PG as the GRIZ can ask for. Physically he has an NBA ceiling. He also has that rare "IT" factor. I have a feeling he will improve his shooting, and when he does he will dominate the BSC and make waves nationally too.

Cherry is a flat out "baller". As ugly as his shooting looks, I love watching this kid play. His defense is the best I have seen in years, especially in the BSC. His leadership and confidence is off the charts. Providing he continues the path he is heading, and gets his FT shooting to 60% plus, I will not be surprised to see him get a legit shot in the NBA.

Speaking of pro ball, Mslacat might be right, Qvale has an outside shot for his size. If Qvale can put up double doubles and show some more offensive consistency, he could be in an NBA camp next year. I remember mslacat posting that one time, I really questioned it, but it looks like Qvale is rounding out to be a pretty damn good big man.

I don't think it is necessary to get carried away with diagnosing Will's FT shooting flaws based on one game. Remember, he was vastly improved in this area toward the end of last year.
