Griz v. NAU Game Thread

Rogers took exception to all the Griz trash talk

NAU fell apart. Griz played well in the second half and won. Rogers got mad at the smack going on but that's part of basketball. No blood....no big deal. Glad the situation didn't escalate resulting in either team losing a player for the next game.

I'd like to say we'll see you again this season, Griz fans, but NAU won't beat Weber State next week.

Good luck the rest of the way.

Thanks. Don't be too sure, come tourney time everything goes out the window. Weber had their hands full today with EWU.

Oh, and your announcer is GREAT! Is always excited, for BOTH teams. :thumb:

Nice burst to open up a tight game. Missoula should be rocking starting on Wednesday...wish I could be there to enjoy it.

The better half wanted to "talk" so I could only listen to the post game interview with Tinks with one ear. But I can tell you that it packed one hell of a punch! The interview that is....

Griz roundball with Cherry et al hasn't seen this kind of excitement since...since the Rudy "Zip" Rhodes era... (Hmm, I'm seeing the young pups scratching their heads with a hearty WTF at that name from the archives ) ;)

Well, you got me on Rudy Rhodes. I thought Ed Buzzetti had told me everything there was to know ...

What a great game. Andy Martin got some important time.

There was plenty of trash talk both ways, as there always is. Rogers did his fair share of it earlier in the game as well.

Just got back from the Hellgate/Capital game, what a game! Young Tinkle was amazing the whole tournament, smooth player and cool as the other side of the pillow during crunch time. The first thing he did after the game was jump the rope that keeps people off the court and run into the stands to give his mom a big hug. She was crying her eyes out with joy! A nice scene to say the least

I sure hope the Tinkle family doesn't move soon but I would understand some schools offering big (ger) money for his coaching skills.

Way to go Griz! Way to leave no doubt who the Big Sky regular season champs are!

Oh and thanks Double Nicks for answering my question! :thumb:

Tale of two halves - makes me wonder if the guys were a little weary from so many games in such a short time.

Good to see Will get that much playing time, you can tell he's not 100%, doesn't seem to trust stepping on that foot and running laterally is a challenge. But still slashed and created plays, left his feet, made some tremendous shots.

Jamar's jam was awesome. Dahlberg absolutely exploded. I've been to 7 games this year and I've not heard it that rowdy yet this year.

Jordan Gregory's tenacity is fun to watch, as is Mike Weisner's. Those two are such great shooters and frustrate the hell out of the guys they defend.

Good minutes for Martin tonight.

It was a fun second half, first half was forgettable, ha. The guys were all living it up afterwards, watching them cut down the nets was great, especially Tinks.

Nice work Griz - this is one big goal accomplished.

So damn glad I gambled, had faith in them winning this one to host tournament, and drove the 950 miles. The pregame tailgate was good $2.00 beers and $1.00 hotdogs. I was a little worried how flat the crowd and team were the 1st half. At halftime, I found a seat behind the bench and glad I did. Those boys came out to kick ass in the 2nd half.

Will Cherry is an amazing leader. I asked around before the game, how well is he? I was told about 85% but there would be no way he was not going to play considerable minutes. He wanted this to be his party. He showed it in the 2nd half. Will was outright amazing leading this team to victory. He was a little tentative the 1st half. The 2nd half he zeroed out the injury, but still did not have his normal quickness.

Weisner and Gregory were flat out studs and clutch tonight. It was nice seeing them both get going in the 2nd half. Weisner is becoming very good at drawing charges as well, with great footwork and anticipation. Mike looked comfortable again shooting for the 1st time in about a month I think. Gregory is outright amazing in how he gets rebounds. If he were 6'6" or taller, he would average 10 board easy. He always has position and knows where the ball will be going. His court sense is something that cannot be coached.

Coleman is looking much better and more comfortable than what I seen at UNC and CSU. He is pretty athletic, and solid on the boards as well. Martin looked pretty comfortable out there too. He actually had position on the blocks a few times, and somehow they did not get him the ball . He is learning well. Love watching him block shots. If he does not fall for fakes, he impacts a lot of shots. I really like Andy's upside. He has a lot of untapped potential. He has great touch from the line too for a big man. That is a great sign that he can develop good scoring with the ball too.

The GRIZ missed a lot of shots they normally hit, mostly in the 1st half. I am happy they played GRIZ ball in the 2nd half, and happy the crowd got into early in the 2nd half. That 2nd half was actually pretty electric from the crowd, especially when Kareem flushed one, and Weisner hit his last 3!!! It reminded me of the old ZOO, minus the intimidation factor.

I stuck around after the game. Loved watching the team cut the net. Tinkle was mobbed after the game. He did not turn down one high five, hug, handshake, and must have been out there an extra 30 minutes making sure every single fan on that floor was shown appreciation. It was amazing watching him with the fans. Seriously, there is not a better ambassador for GRIZ basketball and athletics than Wayne Tinkle. I was talking to a few other fans after the game. Consensus was hoping he stays at Montana for a long time.

Another thing that struck me while watching the net cutting, how special is this sophomore class? Gregory, Weisner, Henderson, and Deshields are 2 for 2 for conference championships. It would be amazing if they can pull off 4. They have a chance at going down as the best recruiting class in GRIZ history.

Well, between the drive, and the game, I am exhausted but so excited. I better try to get some sleep, if it is possible. I cannot wait for the tournament. Happy the team made my drive worth it. GO GRIZ, Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just returned from the game (and a LOT of celebratory beers!!).

Clearly a lot of tired legs tonight. At one point I counted 9 strsight warmup J's that hit the front iron; and we saw plenty of that in the first half. But this team is just resilient.

Solid second half. Great crowd.

And Mathias limping up the ladder to cut the net. Truly special.

Montana Grizzlies. Big Sky Champs. (Damn, that has a great ring to it!!!)

(Oh, and Weebs: no banner for you!!!!)

Well, I remember Zip! He was the show! I also remember the Griz wearing striped shorts like the Globetrotters during his playing days here.
I'd wager most posters here don't know what a "Silvertip" is, either.

Was talking with my dad about that last night as well. This team is only going to keep getting better through the years - which is just insane. We've got 4 sophomores who aren't just getting spare minutes in junk time but are major contributors. Add in some very talented freshman behind them and Juniors who will return next year in Jamar/Hutch/Coleman... I just can't get over how Tinks and staff have continually added more and more talent to the ranks of this roster.

I wonder who the mystery post player be they are bringing in for next year? We should find out between April and June. One more quality post player is all the GRIZ need. My guess is, a good JC guy from Region 9 this year, then a HS recruit for 2014. I hope the HS big man will be Dunn's teammate. Sorry cannot remember his name. If Martin develops his game to the point of where I feel he can, this team will be very special the next 2 years.
