Griz QB? What's shaping up so far?

I can't help but wonder how long it will take BH to decide on which QB will be leading the offense. He never seems to be in much of a hurry to decide.

True...but, zero chance Jensen = Sneed.
Zero chance? First of all I loved Sneed. But he played a few games at UNLV where he had mils success. Like Jensen had to go JC route. His stats that year.By the way Fort Scott dropped football in 2021.
2017 - Fort Scott CC:Transferred to Fort Scott Community College in Kansas… Played in eight games for the Greyhounds… Threw for 1,257 yards and seven touchdowns, completing 136 passes in 231 attempts, over a 63 percent average… Rushed for 295 yards on 79 attempts with a long of 42 yards... All-KJCCC honorable mention.

Jensen went to BYU. Then Mormon Mission was cut short and he went JC route. He went JC route in California which could be argued was higher level than JC league in Kansas. He led his team to a 9-1 record.
His JC coach said“I have 29 years of college coaching experience and he’s one of the best pure passers I’ve been around,” Yelverton said. “He has a big arm, is very accurate and can make every throw on the field. He's a very cerebral kid and makes great decisions.

"He knows and understands every coverage and knows what the best beater is for all of them. He can change protections and is just an incredible kid and a great teammate. I know his commitment is probably going to shock a lot of people but trust me, he's good enough to play there and will compete with anyone." His JC stats 2021 (Fr – Contra Costa): Completed 155-of-268 passes (57.9%) for 1,970 yards with 22 touchdowns and 9 interceptions and rushed for 105 yards on 64 carries (1.6 avg) with 4 TDs while starting 10 games as a 2021 freshman quarterback at Contra Costa Junior College in San Pablo (Calif.)… He also had 1 tackle.
He then signed with New Mexico and flipped after being RECRUITED by USC. He didn't play much there but was a scholarship player at USC. He might not be equal to Sneed. Zero chance though?

I keep hearing this, but I think it is recency bias. Out of all the years that Hauck has coached, I only remember three where the QB was not named before the season started. And one of those years where it took a while to decide we went to the national championship.

Excellent points. I appreciate you pointing that out.

This all stems from ahead of the 2023 season when he proclaimed over and over again during fall camp that the Griz would employ a two-QB system until "someone rose up and won the job. Until then, we will play both."

As we all know, after offensive inconsistencies for much of the non-conference that fall, Sam Vidlak got sacked 11 times at Northern Arizona while Clifton McDowell was visibly despondent on the sideline. Then McDowell led UM to a narrow win over Idaho State, two crucial road wins over Idaho and UC Davis and all of a sudden, he'd seized it. And the Griz went on a 10-game winning streak.

Last year, Hauck dug his heels in again. And I think Ah Yat almost seized it...then got hurt against Weber....and Fife played really well with Ah Yat out...then when Ah Yat returned, it turned into a mess...

Often times reality and egriz narrative are not the same.

I lived with Cole Bergquist for a few years in college. When Jason Washington came in and was the guy at the beginning of 2005, Cole knew he was better and would eventually beat him out, which he did. In 2006, Cole thought he'd earned the job from his performance as a redshirt freshman the previous fall....but Hauck brought in Swogger. Cole didn't react well to the challenge. Swogger won the job and led the Griz on a deep playoff run. But that really motivated Cole once he knew that he had given up the job that he assumed was his.

Then Cole was an All-Big Sky quarterback in 2007 and 2008 who, in my biased but also professional opinion, was one of the best QBs the Griz have had this century. He proved that by going on to play in the CFL for four years.

I think of that arch and that narrative all the time when it comes to Hauck and QBs. But that was also back in the day when hardly anyone transferred...

In terms of the recency bias of the "Hauck can't find a QB": Hauck had one of the most talented QBs in Big Sky history in 2003 and 2004 in Craig Ochs. Then the scenario I described above 2005-2008. Then a lights out Andrew Selle in 2009.

Pflugrad messed with the QBs in 2010. Then Jordan Johnson in 2011 (I know Hauck was gone). Since Hauck came back, no question that Sneed was the guy in 2018 and 2019, Cam Humphrey in 2021 and Lucas Johnson in 2022. The big QB ding in those years was the lack of a proficient backup, not the lack of a proficient starter.

Thanks for laying that out so clearly. I know it's Bobby's MO to always push his players and bring in competition every year no matter who they are. However, I do worry that in this current transfer happy system, that guys will leave rather than stay and compete. So far Ah Yat has chosen to stay and compete and try to improve himself. That says a lot to me about his character and I think that eventually he will be the guy. Will it be this year? Remains to be seen.

2023 was a thrilling ride, even in the midst of a lot of head scratching moments, but last year was a tremendous let down.
I think we're all hoping that the new o-line coach will get the o-line in shape and one or both of the QBs will really elevate their game. There's so much talent on this team, here's hoping they can put it all together and make some noise.

Agree on Cole but unfortunately for as long as I live, I will never forget Cole’s intro when they’d go through the starting lineup on tv.

In the voice of a 10 year old boy “Cole Bergquist, San Clemente Ca”😁.

Cole probably should have taken massive amounts of that Frank Thomas-Doug Flutie testosterone booster to deepen his voice so that he didn't sound like Michael 😳 Jackson ?

I personally don't have alot of confidence in AhYat especially his performance late in the season and in particular the PSU game, so I'd like to see what Jensen can do after being coached by who many consider to be the QB guru of CFB for the last few years. As some have said he looked really good in the Spring game.

I'll be more then happy if AhYat proves me wrong and turns into the QB many think can be, but he needs to prove it. And most importantly hope he can stay healthy.
I wish AhYat the best and if he earns the starting position fair and square, so be it.

All true. But, one of them actually has some results. The other has zero.

Again - saying Jensen is leading the locker room right now is simply exaggerated if not outright wrong.
Unless someone has talked to the players, whatever we say is simply exaggerated if not outright wrong. I remember a certain HoF QB that came in as a walk on and during fall camp his freshman season everyone knew he was the future starting QB. It just took the coaches a little longer to figure it out. I still think they were trying to give the QB with the most time with the program the benefit of the doubt but there was no doubt in the players' minds.

Fixed magic 8-ball says yes. Zero.

😃
