The honeymoon is over. Our unstoppable offense proved to be very stoppable tonight. We got a dose of our own medicine as Poly also used a no-huddle offense, and dominated the TOP, which had the effect of accomplishing what Stitt tries to accomplish with his offense....... wear down the defense.

But it wasn't the defense that cost us the game. Our offense looked like it did in the first fall scrimmage.....totally confused. It was a horror show of dropped passes, mis-communication between Gus and his receivers, and very poorly thrown balls by Gus. To make matters worse, our running game was non-existent, except for the long Nuygen run. Our O-line just can not block for the running game.

Gus showed tonight that he is very inconsistent throwing the rock, and is inaccurate on many throws. And our receivers continue to drop easy catches, which really hurts this control-type passing game.

We are also turning the ball over way too often. Bobby Hauck would be blowing a head gasket if his team turned the ball over as much as we have done so far this season.

As I predicted, our special teams are costing us....... poor punts......poor KO coverage.....missed FGs.

And, the center snaps continue to be very shaky, as I stated before the season started. Gus saved at least 5-6 disasters on poor snaps. It will cost us in future games, as you will see. Write it down.

Not sure Gus is the answer. I would like to see what our back-up can do.

Yes, we came very close to being 2-0. But we also came very close to being 0-2!

Wow all of that mess you just mentioned and it still took an improbable 49 yard field goal in the final seconds for the Griz to lose to a team who beat us 42-21 last year.....that is exactly why I'm not worried one bit about this team this year. This team will be in the thick of it for big sky title.

You should be worried. Poly was un-ranked, lost lots of great players to graduation, and we played them at home, and lost. Great teams do not lose at home to an un-ranked opponent.

While I agree that it was a pretty poor performance by the offense, I wouldn't lose too much sleep about the fact that Cal Poly is "unranked". They are a pretty good team, and should be ranked. (However, their opening part of their schedule is just absolutely brutal...)

Really....improbable...

Let's not tell lies and hope others believe them. Here are the facts:

Cal poly returned 16 starters....9 on offense

They led the entire nation in rushing last year

We held them to 386 total yards....not many teams will accomplish that this season (maybe no one will)

We had 4 turnovers and still had the game in hand at the end

Gus was "off and awful" but still went 40-64 for 353 yards (62%)

Our offense was awful and still put up 459 yards on a pretty good D who prepared for this offense all of fall ball

This is why I'm not that worried Atl. Those facts speak very strongly for what this team is capable of this year. Not going to beat anyone when you have 4 turnovers. Clean that up and this team will be tough to beat.

They were also only able to cash it in for 17 points...

Nice to see Atlanta is not in jail. This is usually the time he gets tossed out of egriz and ends up in a location they call Ban.

We did not play well against Poly last night, no question about it. Most teams that lose fall into that same old thing. Turnovers, interceptions, catch-able passes dropped, special teams lacking and many of the usual age old problems.

Our solution is to improve in these areas. Just one less foul up and we probably win the game. I know we will improve as the season goes along. How much we improve will put us where we end up. I like our chances!

There's a pile to discuss here. I'll comment on special teams. Remove #20 from the punt return team. It was discussed in detail last year and in the off season to death.... A novice can see that our punt return is a liability. Instead of being a weapon it looks like a horror movie... :egriz:

May as well throw in towel on this season...there is nowhere to go but down from here. Kiss the conference championship goodbye and playoffs are completely out of the question. Hope we have some good recruits coming in for next season.

Ha Ha, nice sarcasm. You have to admit, when a team is rushing 3and you can't run, that is something to be concerned about. I just hate Poly, that triple option is a beast and I really thought the Griz would win because of the offense, something that Montana did not have last year. Lots of football to be played but it does not mean one can not comment on the game that was just played......

great thread about last nights game....good input from alanta griz 1, jodcon and putter.....as diligent fans we should evaluate each game as if it counts towards the end goal......to objectively see our particular strengths and weaknesses which could lead to suggestions that could ultimately create adjustments
posters looking at this as being negative are not seeing the value of astute observation and giving others a right to post constructive thoughts
we do not all have to agree to add productivity

Poly dropped back 7 and 8 all game. 4 guys back about 8 yards and the corners and safeties another 8. Make Montana dink and dunk but have to make perfect throws to go down field. Stitt said he would know exactly what the opposition was going to do by the 2nd half...Poly did not disguise it and Montana still could not move the ball. Kept everything in front of them and used their speed to counter any run plays that Montana had. This O-Line will hold Montana back all year because they can not block. I can't count how many guys they just did not see to block in the game.

Kind of lost in that 4th and inches at the end when the Griz were flagged for two men in motion is that it wasn't a dead ball foul and the result of the play (Gamboa for some reason was the ball carrier) was a stop short of the line to gain. That's why CP declined the penalty and took over right there. If the Griz had made the needed inches, CP would have to accept the penalty, it would have been 4th and 5, and we could have coffin corner punted. Even a touchback punt there would have run a few more seconds and made CP have to cover more ground.

What fourth quarter were you watching? Poly made no less than about five horrible mistakes that should have assured a Griz win. They were begging the Griz to take that game yet Poly still wins it..... Improbable FG? Unbelievable comment....

Don't mess with him. He's hooked on da Griz.

Actually I can be very unbiased. Just letting you know the sky isn't falling here is all. We played like crap and still had the game won. That alone speaks volumes to what this team can do. Cal poly is legit and will be in the hunt. It's not like we played Fort Lewis here and had problems. Will you feel better when the Griz beat Liberty by 14 or will you still be pissed? Most thought the Griz would be 0-3 to start this season with a mess if an offense and a crap coach. I see it very differently....especially when we will be 2-1 with wins over highly ranked NDSU and Liberty and a loss to another ranked team.

Oh and a couple have commented on the improbable 48 yard FG comment.....I know all I need to know about your football knowledge if you think 48 yard Field Goals are gimmies, especially by freshman kickers, let alone a wet field and ball. Ask any kicker in college at any level if that kick is a gimme or is probable and you'll have your answer.

It's not your improbable FG for the win comment that's the issue. It's your overall perception of events. Sure the Griz O played poorly but the Poly team had a horrible 4th quarter full of mistakes yet they eventually won the game. The Griz couldn't close Poly out even tough they had everything go their way, an INT that was fumbled back to the Griz, a decision to go for it on 4th and 3 instead of
kicking the easy FG, a punt mistakenly fielded on the 2 yard line and a killer roughing the passer penalty that extended a Griz drive. Fans have a tendency to explain things away like " our O played horrible yet we were still in the game at the end and that's a moral victory". Poly fought thru more and got the victory. On the road no less. That's the issue. Not that BG had a poor game and the Griz showed resolve by keeping it close. Sure a win at Liberty next week will make all things right. But today, it's about which team wanted it more. That team was Poly....

I think it's funny to watch the Acid Spewers like yourself completely mis-analyze the situation. Jeez, learn something about the game of football before you post again.

CV, what game were you watching? You really don't have a clue about football. Your JV rugby career must be about as far as you got in athletics, or knowledge of the game.
